a little out of the centre, but worth going, they have a display of traditional sweets and snack items, that will help keep your energies up while you continue shopping.
don’t worry if you don’t know the spice combinations for the curry in mind, they put it to gether for you!
they also have a range of cassava chips, fresh produce and herbs

One of my favourite shops in York. Filled with spice, rice and other things nice (!) The curry packs that they offer are the best thing, I think. Choose from a range of different curries, choose your spiciness, and the staff will create the mix on the spot. They’re also keen to give advice on how to cook it, and what ingredients work best. Having tried a few, I can recommend the xacutti and bombay potatoes. Well worth a visit, but they also offer a mail order service, although this comes from their other shop darn sarf, I think.

I Love this spice place! really interesting idea and you can buy spices on their own too. They sell EVERY imaginative spices and herbs you could think of. not that expensive either. the place alone is worth a visit even if it is just for a smell. ;o)

Rafi’s spice box is a great place to visit if you like a bit of cooking! the idea behind the shop is very clever. Rather than buying all the spices you need to make a curry separatley (quite a daunting task for a curry beginner like me!), you just choose the curry you want to make from the menu, then they will package them all together for you in the right quantities! all you do when you get home is put them in a pan with water and a meat of your choice! they tast great and the method is foolproof. Rating 5 as i dont think there are many other shops like this.
