The Duchess is a venue in York which appeared a few years ago. They often have well known bands playing as well as unsigned and local bands. Last time I went I saw We are Scientists and it was great because the venue is small so it was quite an intimate gig. The venue is a little sticky/​dirty but I think I can get over that after a few drinks! Also the drinks aren’t too badly priced and I enjoy going there on a normal night out even when I’m not going to watch a band.

I love the duchess it’s one of my favourite places for indie/​rock music in York, and generally not too expensive to get in (and drinks are generally heavily subsidised which I like– it annoys me when places like Salvation will charge you £5 entry then drinks are like £3.50), the only complaint is lack of disabled access, which means I can’t go here on a bad day.

Not a bad venue overall. Floor was a bit sticky, but there were seats at the back for people who just wanted to talk (complete with tv screen showing the stage) and 2 ladies loos, so no queuing — at last, somewhere realises that ladies need lots of loos! staff were friendly
