Hernandez bakery is waaaayyyy better. And you get to avoid the unappetizing fighting roosters on the side of their building that people seem to think is ‘historic’ but really is a giant eyesore.

Love this little authentic place. Traveling thru and went thru drive thru. Fast and efficient. Guy at 7 – 11 recommended. I work Out of car sales rep so this was perfect. Two tacos– enchilada 4 $ quick easy ate in parking lot and then hit the road. Will visit again. All fresh and tasted great!

If you’re visiting Abilene or have just moved, this is one of the first places you’ll hear about, but in my opinion this place enjoys way more praise than it’s due. It’s best known for its breakfast burritos, which I don’t quite understand. I always compare them to cigars; they are thin, tight, and contain little filling. The food tastes okay, but somehow it always, ALWAYS comes out room temperature or cold for me. Maybe they pre-roll them in the back to save time, I’m not sure. I do know that my opinion would be a little bit higher about this place if they could serve me some hot breakfast. Carne guisada is probably the most popular filling, and while I can agree it tastes better than some places in town, it too suffers from the poor presentation and lack of heat. The one thing I do love about the place is the hot sauce, it’s actually hot and pretty tasty. The downside is that they have somehow managed to find the world’s smallest plastic ramekin(1 oz or less) to serve it in, and they only give one per burrito ordered. I love my salsa and this just won’t cut it. I order their $ 4 side of salsa for my burritos when I come here, but I’m not happy about it. It’s also a bakery with a pretty diverse offering of pastries. I’ve always wished I could develop a taste for Mexican baked goods because the colors are so vibrant, the shapes so inspired, but I just don’t enjoy them. The people who do, look like they’re so happy to pick them out and usually pinch off a bite right there in the store and I’m inclined to believe that if this is your thing, la popular is a good place to stock up. There are far better burrito spots in town for breakfast. This place just doesn’t live up to the hype.

The best breakfast burritos in town! Every morning this place is packed with people trying to get some of their outstanding egg and chorizo or potato and chorizo burritos. Love, love, love this place!

THE place to go in Abilene for burritos! My personal favorite is the bacon, egg, and cheese — but really they are all delicious. You can also buy their tortillas — definite must for anyone who makes Mexican food at home. It beats any tortilla you can buy at the grocery store.

Burritos are amazing. Never had a bad experience here. I usually order the egg and potato or the egg and meat. I need to remember this place more. Eat here and you won’t be sorry.

My favorite joint in Abilene! They call them«burritos» but I call them«tacos». Note when you order — don’t expect a large burrito! The carne guisada is the best I’ve ever had. They taste like the food of heaven! My associates enjoy ordering breakfast tacos — eggs and beans etc, but I can’t pull myself away from the magical carne guisada.

Stopped in this morning it was my first time here as soon as I pulled up there were 4 or 5 other cars behind me and I can see why. This place is delicious! I ordered 2 breakfast burritos one which was bacon and bean and the other was chorizo and bean. You get 2 little salsas in the bag and boy are they yummy! Reminds me of Julios in San Angelo. Will definitely be back soon!

Boring, small, tasteless burritos with watery salsa also lacking in flavor. Yech. Bag cheese, no queso blanco.

Stopped in for a quick bite. Not a fan of the breakfast burritos cause their so small compared to the MONSTERS at Alfredo’s. Decided to try the burrito supreme. What arrived at my table was a burrito so big it covered most of the plate. Beef, beans, cheese and whatever else on the inside, covered in sauce, cheese, sour cream, and lettuce on the outside. It was delicious. I will be back for this and some cookies from their bakery.

I like the breakfast burritos here. They are quick and made to order. My personal favorite is the sausage, egg, and cheese burrito. Be sure to eat it with the salsa! The burritos are on the small side though.

The food taste great! I have gotten sick two times when eating there. Even though I like it, I will not go back. It is dirty. Not worth the risk for me.

This has always been a place I loved growing up. They have tasty treats, a good menu, and some dang good lemonade. The only thing is I feel the burritos are a tad bit on the small side. But by all means that’s not a turn off. It is a great place for a tasty snack or a tasty meal.

okay, I just want to say this is NOT authentic MEXICAN food. Recently coming from California, I’ve been looking a GOOD mexican food joint and I am not talking about a taco bueno or taco bell. I am looking for real Mexican food. I was told this place has the best burritos in town and… I totally disagree. Burritos are ookay nothing exciting about them and burritos are small at that. This is also not authentic mexican food, sorry guys!

I grew up on La Popular and although the burritos have gotten smaller, the prices have gone up, and they’re nearly not as greasy I they use to be in the late 80’s early 90’s I still love this place. First of all, burritos and the breads are the direction to go(the menudo isn’t bad either) but if you want quesadilla’s with sour cream and guac, go to Taco Bell. The flour you feel on the tortilla’s is a sign that it’s FRESH. I prefer the egg and bacon, carne guisada, or corizo and egg burritos. The hot sauce is great and when I get to visit Abilene, I usually always take a a couple of pints on the road to take home.

A favorite during my college days. Saturday morning’s the roommate and I would trek over to La Popular and get giant homemade Lemonade’s and 3 or 4 burritos(they are small, but very cheap), my favorite is the Huevos con Chorizo burritos. I recently visited and they are still the same great little burritos that I remembered from many years ago!

I was really not impressed. After hearing everyone rave about their breakfast burritos I was really expecting something good. I was also expecting authentic(no guac, sour cream, etc…), and in that sense they delivered. I got the potato, egg, and cheese burrito and it was only –meh-. The tortilla has too much residual flour and the contents themselves were very bland, the cheese was not melted so that I got a huge bite of cold. The size was appropriate to the price and they get your food to your fast(which I guess accounts for the lack of melted cheese). I might give them another chance and get something with some more spice, but I can make better breakfast burritos at home.

I know this place is pretty much –the– place to go for good burritos in Abilene. I’m sad to say I was not impressed. My friends and I went there a couple of days ago and the food we had there was nothing to write home about. I had the quesadilla meal with the refried beans and rice. There was nothing extra on the quesadilla, just cheese on a tortilla. I expected maybe some guacamole or maybe even sour cream. Wasn’t there. The beans had no real flavor. The only good flavorful thing about the rice was the tiny bits of cilantro in it. To add to this injustic, we felt pretty nauseous a couple hours after eating there. I probably won’t go there again.

Disclaimer: I haven’t been here in years. That said, I used to love love love this place. The breakfast burritos were amazing, albeit slightly greasy sometimes, and the pastries and baked goods always had me leaving with a few too many goodies in my bag. I still sometime wonder if we should drive all the way back to Abilene just for breakfast and baked yumminess… And I am still searching for a certain kind of little jam-filled pastry they used to have and I can’t seem to find it anywhere else! My parents, who only came to visit twice the whole time I was in college in Abilene, still to this day talk about La Popular — «What was that place? You know, the one with the really good burritos? And all the pastries? The one we loved?» Yes, Dad. I remember.
