Okay, Hawai’i’s debate over mass transit goes back to the 1960’s. Whether you’re a supporter or skeptic, I believe the psychological barrier that exists in many local people’s minds of what mass transit actually is, is vast. Hey Vegas doesn’t have one, so why should we? You mention light rail, elevated rail and many locals have no idea(or had no idea until H.A.R.T. became a polarizing topic). But what they do know is Pearlridge Center’s Monorail. This novelty people mover is the only one of its kind in Hawai’i. It’s been connecting Uptown and Downtown since 1977 and costs 50 cents one way. As a kid, this was a huge treat for me as I would plaster my face to the window and admire the view. Small pleasures. A great vantage point to check out the watercress patch. Maybe one day we’ll be able to view from this monorail a much larger elevated rail system planned across nearby Kamehameha Highway. Or maybe this monorail will continue to remain the only example of what could have worked when applied on a grander scale. Hopefully H.A.R.T. will not follow the similar fate of the Las Vegas Monorail. #Yelp 365: 016⁄365

Riding the Sky Cab Monorail at Pearlridge is just like going to Disneyland! Okay, sure… I’ve never actually been to Disneyland. But how different can it be? Seriously though, what a deal! For 50 cents, you are quickly and efficiently transported from one mall to the other in a clean comfortable car with a pretty nice panoramic view. It is much quicker, cooler, safer, and, on a rainy day, drier than walking through the parking lot. And, if your kids are young and gullible enough, you can convince them that the Sky Cab Monorail is a Disneyland ride! Have fun, hang on tight, and keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times!
