— Update — C & R’s is now open again. One of the owner’s sons is now operating the stand. – C & R produce is a family run produce store off 441 in-between Gainesville and Alachua. As they’ve grown over the years they’ve built up their operation and turned it from a regular side-of-the-road produce stand into a building with more variety/quantity. You may recognize their business by the creepy dummy on their sign waving a flag(if it’s not waving, they’re not open). The waving dummy is convenient as it lets you know far enough down the road to be able to brake(65mph zone) without pissing off the folks behind you. The produce they offer is seasonal, so depending on when you go you’ll have a different variety to select from. They are also picky when it comes to the quality of their product, sometimes to the detriment of their selection. There have been a few times where I was relying on them to have something I needed for a recipe, which they end up being out of. I’ve learned to rely on them for the following produce, but nothing more: Acre peas, onions, potatoes, zucchini, a variety of squash, green beans, eggs, carrots, corn, tomatoes, varying peppers, honey, preserves, and citrus/apples/watermelon/pumpkin/broccoli/boiled peanuts based on season. The quality and price are what keep me stopping by their stand after I’ve picked up other items for dinner from Publix or Hitchcocks. My bill is usually 50% cheaper than if I purchased from either of the aforementioned. The flavor of their produce is typically better than what you’d get at a regular grocer(the onions are a standout). Another plus and reason for support is they try and stock as much local produce as possible. They do occasionally work with distributors outside the area if they are unable to obtain a certain item or if a local offering isn’t up to par. If you’re not already in the area, it may not be worth your time & gas to get your produce here. A farmer’s market would give you similar quality & price if it’s closer. If you’re in the area I recommend a stop to see what they have to offer.
