Berkeley Academics was a high quality tutoring service, with tutors from UC Berkeley or graduates from there. I think services have scaled back quite a bit now, but if they are still offering services, I would highly recommend them if you need it for your child.

Okay, so disclaimer, my wife works there during the summers as an instructor so I’m probably biased. But since I’m the first reviewer, let me get started. Berkeley Academics started about 3 – 4 years ago, based in Alameda, and they rent office space in Bay Farm. They do after school tutoring throughout the school year and hold several sessions of summer camp that last 2 – 3 weeks each, ranging from writing to debate to mathematics, focused subject courses like chemistry and physics, and even SAT prep. The summer camps generally take place at an elementary or middle school so the facilities are more expansive. I also think they have a San Ramon thing going on. Teachers are mostly Berkeley students or grads so they’re top notch, and some even have teaching credentials or MA Education degrees. The kids like it because the learning is fun. The teachers are personable and really do «teaching,» and aren’t just expensive summer camp babysitters nor out to regurgitate pre-packaged material, which is refreshing. I grew up watching people get paid good money by my parents to teach me things they didn’t care about, usually just handing me worksheets, or droning about a subject without ever making an attempt to engage me personally. So, I find it neat to see something rather different at Berkeley Academics.
