History
Established in 2002.
Peter Kahl, formerly of Suppenkuche in SF and Cindy Johnson, formerly of Café Du Nord teamed up to create the Speisekammer. A German restaurant with a full bar. At the time it opened Alameda had only a couple of good restaurants — and none where you could also get a good cocktail. Since it opened many other restaurateurs decided Alameda was a safe bet and the scene has flourished.
Meet the Business Owner
Cindy and Peter K.
Business Owner
Chef, Peter Kahl came to San Francisco from Berlin in 1994. He is originally from Northern Germany — Specifically Steinberg, in the Schleswig-Holstein region. Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost of the 16 Bundesländer in Germany. He attended the Berlin Restaurant & Hotel School where he earned his chef certification. He was co-owner for 8 years of Suppenküche– a chic yet cozy German restaurant located in the Hayes Valley in San Francisco. After opening Speisekammer in 2002, Peter sold his interest in the Suppenkuche to his partner. There is currently no affiliation between the two restaurants.
Cindy Johnson has worked as a server, bartender & bar manager in restaurants & clubs in SF & Philadelphia. She took over the historic Café Du Nord in SF in 1991 when it was still a Basque restaurant. She ran it until 2003 — creating a great bar & venue for up and coming bands.
