Gathering Tribes celebrates Native American artists, jewelers and fine craftspeople of the Americas.
History
Established in 1991.
Gathering Tribes began as a humble Native American gift shop and gallery that also sponsored cultural events, classes and lectures. Over the years, the owner has developed relationships with some of the most well known Native artists, jewelers and craftspeople, many of whom come to the gallery for weekend events throughout the year. Gathering Tribes moved to its present location in January, 2009. It is a highly visible corner location with lots of natural light.
Over the years, Gathering Tribes and the community that supports it have raised tens of thousands of dollars for communities in need, including a Huichol Community in Mexico, The United Houma Nation in Louisiana which was devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, and The Longest Walk II.
The gallery also sponsors events for the community at large such as the annual Day of the Dead procession and community altar, and the monthly first Friday art walk, Art Attack Fridays.
Meet the Business Owner
Pennie Opal P.
Business Owner
Pennie Opal is a daughter, sister, aunt, mother and grandmother. She is of Yaqui, Mexican, Cherokee, Choctaw, Algonquin and European descent. She has a big, loud laugh which she tries to use as often as possible. An activist since 1981, she has worked on issues regarding the environment, uranium mining, Native America, nuclear weapons, and the release of political prisoner, Leonard Peltier. She has been a small business owner since 1985. Since 1991, she has owned a Native American gallery, Gathering Tribes, in Albany, California. She is active in the San Francisco Bay Area Native American community and is is currently writing a children’s book which will be illustrated by her husband, Michael Horse, a Native American artist, jeweler and actor. While she doesn’t enjoy juggling, she has become a master at plate spinning… a plate of activism here, a plate of business there, a plate of family here, a plate of laughter there.
