History

Established in 1933.

Around 1933, the Del Frate brothers went into business together selling mugs of beer as well as spirits and wines in Albuquerque. The «Beer Garden» needed a name and when one of the brothers noticed a cardboard cut-out of a group of palm trees, «The Palms» was born. Eventually the beer garden became a small food market, where people would come from all over Albuquerque and surrounding areas to buy homemade food items. Palms quickly became a trade center in the 1960’s, where Native Americans could pawn handcrafted items to acquire groceries. As the years went by, the Del Frate’s accumulated masses of jewelry and arts from the artisans in trade. Around1968, the market had acquired so much jewelry that Angelo put out word in the local cummunity that there was a colletion of Native American items at Palms in the back office-8×10 feet. Word spread of the interesting little place that sold everything from french bread to collectible Native American arts, and Palms Trading Co. was born.
