Prosum Roasters

Thanks to Howie we found this wonderful coffee roaster.
Very small area to sit and sip, this place is about the beans. we bought two different types of beans/​roasts. WE are suckers for good dark roast
definitely not disappointed we had a great cup a joe to go as we has to head our for more shopping.
Our only regret? not being able to make the coffee tasting event they had that evening They would brew every roast and let you sample… oh next time?

It’s in some industrial area close to the Walmart, but they have good stuff and I don’t even like coffee. They support growers in low income countries. They have fancy tastings Fridays at 6:30 pm and the people that work there are super nice. I got a free drink with buying a bag of coffee. A bunch of different restaurants/​coffee shops use their beans.

This morning, I read an article floating around the net that made several claims against Seattlebucks regarding the quality – er, lack thereof – of the product. Apparently only 1% of their beans are certified organic, which didn’t surprise me much, since the industry itself has been using pesticides on plantations for eons. They’re also averse to organic milk which, by extension, makes them a big supporter of the GMO agriculture industry. But for me the most striking point in the piece was the assertion that in 2013, less than 9% of their coffee purchases were certified fair trade. Call me clueless but it seems like their marketing department has done a pretty stellar job masking this ugly little truth; call me clueless, but I thought they did a better job supporting their farmers.
Prosum Roasters takes the concept of fair trade and does it one better: direct trade. Cindy, the owner of this coffee company (which supplies beans for some of the best cafes in Albuquerque), works directly with a few African and South American estates and 10% of the profits go directly back to the people who pick the beans. If you stop into this shop, you’ll see photo collages of these people, where they live and what they do. None of these estates spray pesticides of any kind. You’ll learn that your monies do more than just support families, too: in Ethiopia, for example, proceeds support educational and women’s health programs. Consuming can, occasionally, be an act of goodwill as well as a good buzz.
And just in case you were curious, the coffee is fantastic. It’s worth a visit simply to smell the air, but you’re welcome to stick around a while and sip a cup. I had an Americano and noted, immediately, the muscle and dimension in the pour, impressive. They own an impressive espresso machine, to boot. Cindy said it’s the Ferrari of Italian coffee makers. It looked that way. Support local, support international local, support direct trade. See ya, Seattlebucks.

Just chanced upon this little spot. Prosum specializes in selling wholesale to restaurants (with great taste, imho) like Tia B’s Waffleria, but they also sell individual coffees from their small bar, which has maybe 4 seats. Not the best spot to meet a friend and have an intimate conversation, but the owner is a hoot, with a great sense of humor and lots of personality. I’m an iced coffee guy, and their cold brew is excellent (I’m not a gourmand, but my test is usually whether or not I choose to put cream, and they passed it, no cream).

Run, don’t walk, to Prosum. It’s in a strange location, but totally worth the adventure of finding it in tucked away in an industrial area off Carlisle between Menaul and Candelaria. The owner (Cindy) is fantastic! She lights up my mornings with a smile and an excellent cup of coffee. Cindy travels to South America and Africa to visit the farms where they purchase their beans (check out the photo collages on the walls when you’re in the shop). The flavors of their coffee are out of this world! Beans are roasted in-​house and represent a variety of single-​origins and blends. You can buy freshly-​roasted beans to go or grab a delicious espresso from Cindy’s StarTrek-​looking espresso machine (or do both — buy a bag of beans, get a free drink!). A percent of the proceeds from the business go back to locals where the beans are grown, so it’s a taste good-​feel good cuppa joe!

This place is worth your time and money. Excellent coffee, roasted in house, given a full education on the origin if you want, aaaaaand all going to benefit the locals in location the coffee is harvested in!

PHENOMENAL!
1.) these people really know coffee — they totally understand the roasting art to capture the delicate flavor profiles of different beans.
2.) brewing options of all types: I had a siphon brewed cup of Ethiopian beans that was simply perfect — the method was perfect for capturing the nice blackberry undercurrent (sorry, bad pun…).
3.) be sure to check out the pictures from bean buying trips on the back wall. That cup you’re drinking REALLY DOES improve literacy in Nicaragua and empowers women in Ethiopia. Get your buzz on while saving the world!
4.) get them talking… These people are COOL!

I trusted her the second I saw her Washington State University ballcap… a fellow Washingtonian means they know the real deal when it comes to coffee.
What Prosum Roasters is doing is amazing. They go directly to the source to get their beans, and the money goes directly to the farmers. No middle man, no sketchy business contracts; just trust, respect for people and coffee. I love this place.
You can have your coffee in many ways, which I absolutely love. If you want a latte, they can do that. Turkish coffee, they can do that, too. Pour over, black, syphon, they have it all, and it’s all DELICIOUS.

I love the coffee here. Cindy’s Nicaraguan blend (Santa Teresa de Nicaragua I believe) is my favorite. She is always so friendly, her prices are reasonable, and her passion for coffee shows in everything she does.

Without a doubt, this is the best service and quality of any coffee shop or roaster in New Mexico. I am amazed at quite a few aspects of this business and although I’ve only been there twice I’m certain that I’ve found a gem in this city.
First off, the coffee is the highest quality you’ll find in this region of the US, not just Albuquerque. The owner personally travels to regions of the world where her coffee is grown so that she can personally meet with the farmers. It’s inspiring to think that the person making your cup of coffee was there when those coffee beans were packed up and ready to leave Ethiopia, Nicaragua, and other places where coffee grows in abundance.
Next, the prices are outstanding. I believe it’s around $ 12 for 12oz of the best coffee you’ll find anywhere around here. A cup of coffee costs just over a dollar and if you want a pour-​over, Chemex, etc. it’s only 50 cents more. It makes me so mad when I go to any other coffee shop and they charge $ 2.50 for a small coffee and almost $ 4 for a pour over that they haven’t even been trained to make properly. At Prosum Roasters the water temp for your pour over will be 202 degrees, she’ll weigh out the exact ratio of beans, grind them in front of you, and pour the precise amount of water. I’m blown away by the attention to detail.
Finally, the service is amazing. The owner is so friendly and I will not by coffee from anybody else as long as I’m living in Albuquerque. If I can pay $ 12 for top notch coffee AND a friendly experience that’s guaranteed business from me. No longer are the days where I’ll pay $ 16 a bag and not even have two words said to me at the register (I’m trying so hard not to mention names).
Now for a few (hopefully) helpful criticisms. There are two things I’d like to point out. The first being the location.
Located on Los Arboles st. near Candelaria and I-​25 the shop is in a little corner suite next to about four other small businesses. I had a little bit of a hard time finding the place the first time and was a little disappointed to see that there was no designated parking for Prosum despite the fact that every other business there had reserved parking spots. That’s probably not a big issue but it’s just something I noticed; still plenty of parking on the street right outside the door.
The second thing I found a little odd were the hours. Open Monday through Friday from I think 6:30 — 10:30, you almost have to plan your visit so as not to miss their open hours. Now, after speaking with the owner about this I am all for it. She sells her roasts to other local businesses and as such needs the afternoon to make deliveries and phone calls. Completely understandable. This is a relatively new business and until they expand, these hours work for them.
Honestly you can’t find a better cup of coffee, espresso, or pour over anywhere else in this region. Let’s all support this awesome business so that they can continue bringing great coffee to the 505.

This place is a hidden gem for any coffee or espresso aficionado in Albuquerque.
I frequently buy premium roasts (espresso and single origin) from top notch roasters across the US, and also enjoy some very good local ABQ roasts for making espresso at home, and I’d put Cindy’s coffee there with the very best of them. I like that she always has fresh-​roasted whole beans in 12oz sealed bags with one-​way valve, and that the roast date is on the bag. (Most local roasters don’t do that.) I like a bold and bright espresso and have been really happy with her Rockin Espresso blend. I also pull her Ethiopian single origin as espresso, which is a little trickier but so very tasty when I manage to pull it just right.
Stopping in to buy coffee is always a pleasant and rewarding experience. I always have an interesting chat, usually learning a bit about coffee and the people that produce it, while drinking a top notch espresso from Cindy’s expertly dialed in Synesso machine and K30 grinder (very nice equipment.) I’ve not had a better espresso shot in Albuquerque.
You do, however, need to shoot for getting there before 12:30 PM* on a weekday, and take a good look at the map. It’s a little out of the way on a section of Los Arboles where it doesn’t go through to Carlisle. When you get there just walk toward Camp Bow-​Wow, Prosum is two doors down (closer to the street) from Bow-​Wow.

PROS:
1. Cindy is passionate about coffee.
2. Cindy is a capable, skilled roaster who knows how to compliment the varietal flavors of a coffee with an appropriate roast profile.
3. Cindy knows how to use her top-​of-​the-​technology two group Synesso espresso machine.
4. Prosum offers pourover, filter, steeped, and siphon coffee brews as well as espresso pulls.
5. Cindy is not shy about dialing in and throwing out espresso pulls before getting one that she is comfortable serving to you.
6. Cindy visits African and South American plantations and growers to deepen her involvement with coffee and to network with producers to obtain hard-​to-​get premium beans.
7. Prosum gives back to and supports growers in ‘developing countries’.
8. Prosum has a good variety of fresh roasts on hand at any one time without seeming to be overextended. There is always a roast with tastes that amaze and entertain my palate.
9. Prosum is open at 6:30 am.
CON:
1. Prosum closes at 10am and is closed on weekends. Oh, well. You can’t have everything.

Ok second try for coffee in Albuquerque and lights were out and it did not look open nor did it look like a consumer store front. I tried to keep it local but off to WholeFoods I go…

Very promising coffee roaster and amazing customer service as Cindy the owner is super cool and friendly! Hours are short as business is still new but coffee is among the best offered in Albuquerque and roast dates are provided on bag which is a huge plus. Coffee tastings are held on Friday evenings at 6PM.

Located in the Industrial area between Menaul and Candelaria, Carlisle and Richmond nestled right next to Camp Bow Wow you will find the absolute best coffee roaster in Albuquerque. Cindy gets coffee from all around the world and on the days that she roasts the air is filled with the delightful aroma. Her coffee is pure delight in a cup. My favorite is the Ethiopian, so full bodied rich and addicting. Prosum offers pour overs, french press, siphon, espresso cappuccino and more. Hours are short as Cindy is still building business and is open from:
