The University of New Mexico

The first thing I need to state, here, is that I graduated from this college in 2002, Masters of Fine Arts, Dramatic Writing. Five years at the school, total. I’m penning this from the perspective of how I’d advise a younger me, so if you’re looking for words from a recent graduate, peruse the other reviews. I do make the occasional foray on campus, though, so I’m somewhat aware of how things have changed (and haven’t) since then, and I’ll put this out there: the college should fit the kid.
My first year out of high school was spent at a teensy tiny campus, which basically guaranteed that all of my friends surrounded me at every hour, including weekends, wherein we all did unspeakable things and many of us dealt with the unplanned, unspeakable realities of those blurred decisions. Second year of college I was at one of the largest state colleges in the country. Huge campus. I had a steady girlfriend. I managed to run into her all of once, randomly, during my entire year. (Yes, we did not have cell phones back then.) Many of my classes were in lecture halls, I usually couldn’t meet personally with my professors, and sometimes it was a major hike, if not a bus ride, between courses.
UNM was, for me, a perfect medium. The campus was just right, just big enough for a decent protest, should the need arise, and small enough to regularly connect with my friends. I suppose I really loved the scope of the whole thing. Architecture that didn’t aspire to the grandiose, level-​headed professors that didn’t make a ton, salary-​wise, but knew their sh*t. More than fair tuition-​wise. I mean, hey, if you’re considering sending your kid to this place, or if you’re a kid who’s considering attending, here’s the deal: probably the best value for an average state college education anywhere around, and self-​starters will excel. New Mexico is a brilliant, sunny, blank canvas of a place, gorgeous and occasionally sad. Our higher education institution reflects this reality. Take it or leave it. But my heart bleeds silver and cherry, and I’m a Lobo.

As a curious individual who is exploring graduate school options I actually had a negative experience trying to take advantage of the admission counselling services at Anderson School of Business. During the initial phone call, the girl at the Advising office was telling me I had the wrong number, and she really was not a good communicator. She then sent me an invite with the incorrect time on the day that I was planning to go. The Google invite had an incorrect time for my appointment which I had to clarify prior to going… and tiny map they emailed me did not print ion the document and was illegible on the screen. On the day I went to campus I could not find out where to park based on the directions given in the email. I couldn’t even get anyone to pick up the phone in the Advisement office when I was lost and started running late! The appointments offered are ONLY 20 MINUTES and it’s a real pain to find any kind of parking over there on campus. Because parking is so confusing (I’m not from Albuquerque, and I’ve never spent time at the campus here) AND it was pouring rain — very unusual — I did NOT make my 3pm appointment and I was met with no understanding or sympathy, OR flexibility (I made it into the office at 3:10 or 3:15). I left work at 1:30pm in order to plan ahead for this appointment. Even I could understand them thinking an undergrad student was irresponsible but I was dismissed rudely and the receptionists at the desk could not get me in to be seen. I had even left from work early, using my annual leave hours, and no one was willing to work with me. In my work at a national government office, we do lots and lots of telework and maybe the advisement office should just offer for students to get counseled over the phone. In the past, I had a very generous 1.5 hour counseling session over the phone with someone from Champlain College in Burlington Vermont which was very insightful. As far as UNM conducting business as an institution, I think in my mind the rank VERY POORLY in customer service and personnel skills. and I don’t want to pay money for an education if this will be the way interested students are treated. The adviser who refused to clear his schedule to meet with me or offer to do a phone session was Erick Rodriguez. The students working the reception had no regard for customer service. I do not plan on rescheduling. This whole experience just caused me a bunch of stress and panic!

It’s cheap to attend which is why most people go here. The professor are okay, some are really good and others not so much. The biology department is backwards and the universities requirements for graduation almost force people to be there five years. I wouldn’t recommend people to go to UNM unless they need a degree for cheaps, I just really don’t like it here to begin with so I might be biased. The placement of campus is right next to downtown and the train station (great for people traveling from chicago area or california because ABQ is the midway stop). It’s just alright.

I love the open space at this university. You can walk your dog put your children in the stroller it’s open and free. Lots of trees about to smoke in space there’s a dust crime with ducks in it turtles small baby turtle. So wonderful place to hang out. Union is very friendly friendly there is a. Sonic and the chick-​fil-​a and various other places where you can eat.
This place is at university study but it does offer things for younger people such as music on the weekends. You have the opportunity to bring your children to the music department and they can learn drumming and many different instruments and even singing. I suggest you check out all the academic of the university has to offer

I went to college in Tucson, AZ at the University of Arizona (NOT at ASU!!). UNM reminds me a lot of UA. Sure, UA is bigger and laid out differently. But the culture, the lack of parking spaces, the crappy drivers and the fine low-​cost eateries nearby are all very similar.
I’m an adjunct professor at UNM. I also help to teach a martial arts class (traditional combat jujutsu). So I’m on campus pretty often. Once you find your way around, and what roads go where, you’re pretty set. It’s easy to navigate. It’s also not so big that you’re going to have to walk all over creation to get where you’re going. The campus is also quite bike friendly.
The professors are, in general, quite good. The university offers most majors you could want, and they do a good job. Couple that to the relatively low costs and this is an excellent school for many, many people. And all in the heart of beautiful ABQ!

Decent school, but on the administrative side, they REALLY need to upgrade and move into the 21^st century. Archaic internal systems are holding UNM back. Time to move forward. And I swear to god, if one more person tells me the reason they can’t do something better is that UNM is a big school I will scream. The federal government is way bigger then UNM and they manage to have SOPs for just about everything. UNM really needs to take a good look inside and fix what ails it.

This campus is a LOT bigger than I expected. Of course I don’t know too much about Albuquerque and my friend always complains about how small it is… So I was expecting one building, maybe two. We only covered one side of the campus and I went to class with him. His professor was super nice and excited to have me there, haha. It’s a pretty nice campus and they have a duck pond of all things. I was a little jealous. They have a good variety of eateries on campus and it was really peaceful eating outside and people watching. The class size is pretty small and they had long conference tables with comfy roller chairs so I was pretty happy. That and I didn’t have to pay attention in class for once :)

OK folks, let’s get something straight. If you want the rest of the nation to know who you are, please drop the UNM. Also, it is The University of New Mexico, not the University of New Mexico. Say it with me: THE University of New Mexico.

I love to grab a freshly brewed ice tea from the Satellite café on campus (there are 2: 1 is located in the Student Union Building and the other is in the Student Bookstore at the Stanford Drive entrance), add some Stoli Raspberry Vodka, and stroll around campus (PS: What’s with ABQ? You guys don’t know what a Vodka Tea is?). It seems like every day that I am on campus, I find something pretty gosh darn cool– like a homeless guy faceplanted on the sidewalk by the duckpond or the center of the universe. Couple of museums on campus: Anthropology, Art, Meteorite Museum and Geology Museums, and SW Biology. Check ‘em out.
BTW: The best bathrooms on Campus are in the Student Union Building, the Mathematics and Science Learning Center, and behind the cottonwood tree just east of the Student Health Center.

Very cool Campus. Loved the Art they have all over the place. I was there only for a few days for a special event and left with a great impression of the institution as a whole. I felt they were very culture oriented and that was nice to see.

How old is this university? How about growing some grass.

Okay, so the University of New Mexico really needs a pub. I mean it *really* needs a Pub. Just about every other university out there sees the value of discussing the latest theory (or football game) with faculty over a beverage. One can dream, I suppose.
