History

Established in 2015.

The story of A Few Cool Hardware Stores started in 2003 with our first store in Logan Circle. Our newest location Old Town Ace Hardware in Alexandria is our first store in the state of Virginia. Originally opened in 2008 by a previous owner, the newly acquired Old Town Ace is located in the heart of historic Old Town Alexandria. The store is scheduled to reopen May 2015. We are excited to meet our new customers and become an active member of the Old Town community.

Meet the Manager

Nate D.

Manager

Like many of our managers, Nate started working for A Few Cool Hardware Stores as a 5th St. Ace sales associate in 2012. Shortly after, Nate was promoted to inventory coordinator, then assistant manager at our Takoma Park store where he has thrived over the past 2 years. His dedication to the company, as well as his experience in landscaping, lumber, and roofing made it a no brainer to promote Nate to store manager when we opened our first Virginia store «Old Town Hardware» in 2015. Nate is excited to join the Old Town community, where he is a raving fan of the local culture, history, and people (and their 4-​legged friends!). His favorite part of the job? Hearing that sign of relief when a customer realizes their impossible problem is fixed. Stop by the store and meet Nate and the rest of our great team at Old Town Hardware!

we moved to the area six months ago and have had normal experiences at this store when making minor purchases. A month ago, we decided to buy a grill and asked to have it delivered since it would not fit in our car. After three weeks of calls to the store to find out when we could expect it to be delivered, we were finally told the soonest they could deliver it is another week and a half away. Apparently the Old Town store forgot to send our order to the delivery store, and now we are at the bottom of the delivery list. We missed having the grill for Memorial Day weekend. Will not go back to this store or recommend to anyone in the area.

I came in looking for a solution to a minor problem. I bought a printer stand from Staples that I put together just fine except for installing the front storage door. The hinge for the top part of the door was plastic and although it says it was designed to pop up into place, mine didn’t. I tried Home Depot to find some kind of replacement hardware with no luck. Then I came here. Although they had no specific part I could purchase, the associate who was helping me (Austin) took the time to come up with an idea to cut a pen spring and put it under the plastic pin to help it pop into place. Problem solved and he didn’t even charge me for ruining his pen That to me is true customer service. I will be back and will recommend others to come here. Thanks Austin!

This is a great store for their staff and convenience, but their generic products, under the ACE name is pure and simple — GARBAGE!
Our business uses alot of GE and DAP silicone products for their protection and other properties, like adhesion. Never in our 25+ years have we had issues with thee.
Until now! When they ran out of the name brands, we bought the ACE products. We used them on celebrity owned products and shipped them to California and here in Washington, DC.
A well known National news personality based here in Washington, DC, received his product. His assistant called and wanted us to run down and pick up their item to fix.
The Association Executive who involved our company in this and the previous years projects, was not happy with the situation.
We have items shipped to California to well known personalities, and holding our breath for a successful outcome. Of course, wishful thinking.
Great staff and good availability of certain products, but stay away from the ACE brand, especially if the product is essential to your purpose.

Great local hardware and paint store! The staff are so helpful and are very quick to ask you what you need and point you in the right direction. Reasonably priced, especially since I don’t have to drive all the way down highway 1 to a HD/​Ls. They also have a lot of products Made in the USA, including my awesome pink pig watering can! Love it!

Wow! It’s amazing what new ownership can do. This place used to be horribly stocked, but now it’s a true hardware store. The staff is amazingly helpful and the inventory covers everything from bolts to soda stream. So glad to have our neighborhood hardware store back up and running.

Wow! The new owners have really turned the store around. I was saddened when, under the old owners, I would stop in and find the shelves bare, looking like a scene from Soviet Russia. When I stopped in recently, I was greeted warmly and accompanied by a staff member to the products I needed (which were in stock!) I would much rather shop at a closer and locally owned store than having to make the trek down Route 1 to hit a Big Box store. Welcome back!

I’d rather go here than Lowe’s or Home Depot. For ANYTHING. Just a better experience for the same price. The staff is kind, helpful, and speak English fluently. Also the best place in the area for actual hardware (Nuts, bolts, etc) The drawers are always properly stocked-​unlike the random mess you find at the big box stores. A friendly experience and plenty of parking in the garage in the back

Got a flyer from Ace. Drove into Old Town, parked, and asked for the lanterns in the flyer. Was told, we don’t carry those at this store. Really? They sent me an ad for something they don’t carry? No wonder people shop online. I will get my Benjamin Moore paint elsewhere.

I honestly have had great service at this hardware store. I normally shop at Lowes for better pricing and selections, but when I am at Ace someone always asks me what I need they show me exactly where it is.
I shop here for paint because I like the Benjamin Moore paint. The only other place that carries it charges about 20% more for it in Arlington. On weekends the paint guys are always busy, so you may have to wait in line. I usually just chill out eating the free popcorn and screwing around with my phone. I get the complaints, but it is actually worse at Lowe’s or Home Depot when they are busy.
They usually offer me great advice, except for the guy that once advised me to buy ACE brand paint brushes, saying they were just as good as the Ben. Moore ones that were twice as expensive. Of course they were garbage, with all these loose threads sticking to the wall.

I read the negative reviews, and though I’m sure they were heartfelt, I had the opposite experience. I stopped by soon after they opened on a weekday, the store was nearly empty, the staff friendly, obliging, and helpful. The manager could have sold me way more than he did, but suggested that I buy a better solution at another store, which he gave directions to.
My only complaint was that they were out of a few things (that I wasn’t looking for anyway), but I’ll definitely be back.

A friendly neighborhood hardware store where the employees are always there to help and never annoyed with your endless questions. They probably stock every light bulb imaginable, and they make key copies with great speed. The items may be pricer, but I certainly prefer getting some assistance over cheaper prices at the maze that is Home Depot.

I love the fact that I can take my dog into the store and they treat him like a customer. Ha! He even manages to get a treat out of them. That hustler.
I only come in every so often but everyone I’ve encountered has been very friendly and helpful. The store looks small from the outside but it has a second floor and is well-​stocked whenever I need some hardware, home supplies, whatnot.
I definitely recommend Ace!

It seemed like a nice little small town hardware store, so when I have had hardware-​related needs I have made the 1.2-mile long trek over here. I got a tree stand here without any problems. The second time I wanted some thick gloves that reached up the arm. I wandered around the store for about 20 minutes looking for gloves/​someone who could help me. I didn’t see anyone available to help me, and the cashier had a line of people and I only saw small gloves so I left.
Third time was last weekend and I came specifically for two paint samples to touch up a wall. No exaggeration, I was there for about 30 minutes hovering around the paint area trying to find someone to help me before I finally managed to snag someone’s attention. It was REALLY frustrating. The paint guy had seen me waiting at the counter too when I first walked in but then vanished for a long period of time. When I finally got help, the nice man that I managed to flag down didn’t know much about paint, so we had to wait even longer for the paint guy to come back.
Paint guy himself was not incredibly friendly, seemed annoyed because he had to look up information on one of the colors I was asking for and seemed relieved/​indifferent when the whole thing fell through because I didn’t know the finish of the paint I needed for the wall. At that point I had probably been there 45 minutes and gotten nothing accomplished. ARGH.
So now 2⁄3 of the times that I have been to Ace have been mostly unpleasant because it is near impossible to find someone to help you and most of the employees seem indifferent. I wish I knew the name of the nice guy who tried to help me with the paint, because he was the exception. Honestly, I can get paint and supplies I need much faster at Home Depot so will probably start going back there from now on when I get a car.

We wanted to patronize this hardware store since we live in the area and don’t like to see everything taken over by big box stores. However, we will not be back.
We went in to get two gallons of paint for accent walls. We could have color matched at Home Depot, but opted to go to a Benjamin Moore dealer. The paint counter representative looked somewhat annoyed that we were there. We asked for recommendations on paint finish and he threw a card at us and said he doesn’t make recommendations, it’s a personal preference. Really? I’m fairly certain, there are ranges of recommendations he could have made based on usage. While he couldn’t recommend a finish, apparently he could recommend paint quality, because when we went to the register to ring out, we realized he mixed the more expensive primer + paint blend (which we did not ask for). So the sticker shock added insult to injury.
