Post Carlyle Square

I have lived in the 601 Holland Lane Apartment for almost 37 months now and hoped to live her until I retire, however; when I started living here things were great and are not so great now.
The BAD: When I moved in 601, we had a Starbucks Coffee Machine in the lobby and within 3 months that was gone and a cheaper coffee machine was installed, bottom line, it is not Starbucks in which I thought I was going to be paying amenity fees for.
Alexandria, VA is a dog lover’s city and when I come home on a rainy or snowy day, the elevators are sure to smell like wet dogs. The resolution would be to have cleaning services twice a day, but it takes management by walking around to realize that.
I was told when I signed my initial lease that I could have two parking spaces where I lived, well I bought another vehicle and was told I could not have two parking spaces in the garage where I live, my only option was to park my other vehicle in building 501 which is very inconvenient for me when I live in 601.
The fitness center in building 501 is not adequate in size for the number of tenants in buildings 501, 601, and 640, many times I have gone and it is so packed, I just come back home and work out in the apt. The equipment on the PH level of 601 does not qualify as a fitness center I have a unit that has a corner den that has no air/​heat circulating in the vents. It is unbearable in the winter. The maintenance supervisor told me it was the design and to leave the door open. I purchased some heavy duty black out curtains this year and a space heater because this is my office when I telework. All the windows have air leaking around them, they attempted to put putty on them. The management and maintenance are not on point as it was when I first moved in. Management changed twice. The maintenance staff took the locks off my windows about 9 months ago to get the windows washed and never returned to put them back on. They are still lying in the windows with the screws. This month, I got a late rent notice on my door in which I have never been late; I normally drop my check in the box the day before the first of the month. I pride myself on paying on or before it is due. I immediately went to the office and the young lady pulled the empty envelopes out of a desk drawer and said it is not here and not in the safe, I was adamant about not stopping payment on the check, and she told me to check and see if it had gone through my bank. I told I was concerned that they had internal control problems in the office, because I had no doubt about putting my check in the box the night before the first of May. Basically, the onus was on me to prove. After I did not leave, She once again went through her colleagues unlocked desk drawer, and there was my check in a desk drawer with the envelope open. After returning to my apartment I was furious and expected the management to call. I had to call the manager to get an apology and express my concerns as a tenant of 3 years to be treated with such carelessness and concern. Especially a tenant who has never been late. I don’t pay online through direct debit because I have had my account charged twice in a previous experience by another company. The next day, I get a note on my door that told me that their records showed my rental insurance was expired. I go to the online portal and open up the proof of insurance declaration and it is there with an expiration day of 31 July 16. I was too furious to even call them. The reason I am posting this is I think the management is nonchalant at this point and hopefully they will read this and turn things around.
The GOOD: The Concierges are the best. Lamine is the consummate professional and he always has a smile on his face when I pick up my packages. The entire Concierge Staff are friendly and excellent and very accountable. I have literally had hundreds of packages delivered and never have had any issues. That is above excellent! The courtyard is a great amenity with the gas grills in the summer. The roof top in the summer is a nice place to go and enjoy the view and fresh air. Worth the money! The pool passes are adequate and if I chose to have a guest or two who want to swim. Closet space is great. I have two walk in closets, a coat closet, and a closet outside my den. This is great and you don’t find in too many apt homes. Noise control on my floor is great. The only thing I hear is an occasional bark and the garbage trucks or moving trucks in the morning. Not an issue for me because I am an early riser. Management has made a slight concession because of the air circulation issue in the den and I really appreciate that fact. Safety is never an issue or concern for me. Police and Fire Department are top notch in the area. Location, Location, Location: Whole Foods, restaurants, two 7−11s, hair salon, sandwich shops, and two metros are in walking distance. The good has outweighed the bad and I love the area.

I’ve been here for four months and find it to be a great place to live. Very nice units, friendly tenants, very nice common spaces, and a management company that tries hard to maintain a community feel. Location is great – just blocks to Whole Foods, CVS, Starbucks, dry cleaning, lots of restaurants, the King Street metro, and the heart of Old Town. Highly recommended!

Property itself is great, but undisclosed NOISE is outrageous. Moved here in late-​July and a week in had this deafening vent come on outside our window that we were never told about. Mentioned it to the leasing staff and they said it was a weekly occurrence that they couldn’t change so I worked with them to move apartments (within my 30 day satisfaction guarantee), but none were available with the same square footage… they said they would be able to waive the moving fees outside of the 30 days when a comparable place came available. 3 months later and nothing is still available we finally decided to end our lease early. They are trying to charge us $ 10,077 in early-​termination fees for noise they never disclosed or keep the lease ANOTHER month for only $ 7059 in early termination fees. Unbelievably unacceptable practice!!! We have been very accommodating when working with them, but we’re done.

So I wanted to wait until I lived here for at least a month before writing a review. I am in the 601 building (the phase 2 building as they call it in the leasing office) and I picked the apartment based on positive reviews. I am a young, single girl with a dog and I am VERY particular about where I live, especially when it comes to cleanliness and safety. Overall, I love living here and I am very happy with my choice; however, I have yet to pay any utility bills since I have only lived here a month, so that is something to consider when reading this review. Any time I have dealt with any of the staff, they have been extremely polite and helpful. This building is very pricey, but with what you get, it is much better than a lot of other places I looked at that were not much cheaper. You really get what you pay for.
Apartment itself-​I rent a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment for $ 2700/​mo. Upon moving in, the apartment was immaculately clean and I even searched the bathroom for any uncleanliness and could not find it. Moving in was super easy since we were able to use the service elevator. They give you a 4 hour time slot to move in, but they do not actually regulate it so it isn’t super strict. The dishwasher, washer/​dryer and all of the appliances are new and working well. the cabinets in the kitchen are a tad cheap looking compared to the beautiful granite countertops, but they are fine. Also the stove is electric and I would prefer gas, but not a huge deal.
The building-​601 Holland is great. The building is always extremely clean and the outside is superbly kept. A few tiny complaints that do not really bother me but might bother some. First, the elevator always seems to be sort of dirty. There is free coffee/​tea in the lobby and there is constantly coffee spilled on the floor. There are staff that clean the floors every day but it is always still coffee stained. Also, I have a dog and I pick up after her whenever she poops outside. People do clean up after their dogs for the most part, but I wouldn’t advise walking across any of the lawns because there are the lazy pet owners who leave poop on the grass (or the sidewalk) which I do not understand. Another thing about pets… if you do not like dogs, do not live here. Seriously there are dogs everywhere. I have a dog so I do not mind. But if you do not like dogs, this is not the place for you.
Amenities-​The amenities are great. Residents have access to 501 and 601 so we have two pools, two gyms, a rooftop terrace, and lots of lovely outdoor seating areas. The gyms and pools are always very clean and well-​kept. There are also grills which I have yet to use but people are using them all of the time, and the staff cleans them very regularly.
Safety-​This is one of the main reasons I picked this building. The area is great-​there are always people walking around, even at night, and I have never felt unsafe while walking my dog at night. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the King Street metro station which is super convenient, and the building is also only a few minutes to walk to Whole Foods, 7/​11, starbucks, panera, jimmy johns, potbelly, a nice salon and a dry cleaners. There are also a bunch of restaurants and a USPS on the same street as the building. To enter any of the elevators or doors of the building, you have to use a key fob, which can get annoying at times but is a nice safety feature. I have a parking spot (unreserved) which I pay $ 75 a month for, and I have never had trouble finding a spot (even with my enormous SUV). You can pay $ 125 for a reserved spot but it really isn’t necessary unless you drive everywhere. I barely ever use my car though. Also, the building is only 1 mile from old town which is a great area full of restaurants and shops.
Overall, I have no big complaints about this building. It is extremely pricey… but is a great clean, safe building in a great area, so I don’t mind paying more to live here.

Update: I ended up moving out of state short notice. I was able to get out of the new lease that I signed since I hadn’t actually entered the new lease period. My $ 800 total in fees (moving and annual amenities) was even returned promptly! The simplicity of how I moved out is the reason I’m upping to 5 stars. What could have been a nightmare was actually very easy. Not sure I’d ever make myself afford a Post property again but it was fine while I was there.

I lived here for two years and only left because of I had to be closer to downtown DC. The staff was attentive and always responded to maintenance requests in a timely fashion. The concierge staff was also amazing. A few minor negatives: the business center computers are old and the Internet was often not working. The printer was also not functioning at times and was often out of paper. Also, the grills were not well maintained, causing lines for the few grills that DID work. Overall, I would recommend living here.

So… I will start with the positives… it is near the metro, Whole Foods, and King Street. The roof at 601 is to die for especially in the summer, but those facts can’t possibly save this place. There are a lot of places to look at reviews for apartments and I’d also take a look at
. It’s as truthful as I’ve seen and I’d have to agree with those reviews. I don’t know if the below individuals lived in the 640 stick build building, but that is where my husband and I lived for 15 months. Due to hearing everything your neighbors did, we were let out of our lease early. Besides the noise which was what put us over the top, we felt as though they used bait and switch tactics. One example is receiving packages. Initially we were told the great doorman Laramie would receive our packages and we could pick them up anytime. After having several packages delivered, lost by the staff and thankfully having tracking numbers and miraculously found by the staff we were already weary of having packages sent here. Then we get the email that packages will now be left at your door whether you are home or not. That doesn’t have the potential to have anything stolen, right? You think we were worried because there were several thefts in the garages of bikes!!! Yikes! The gates are always broken as is the work-​out equipment… and there is no hurry to fix anything. The best was when the garage door broke and we couldn’t take our car out on a Sunday morning to go pick up my step-​daughter at the airport. The staff has turned over several times and we last worked with Joel the property manager and the regional VP to handle problems. The best part of moving out we offered to have the carpets cleaned as there were some dirt spots and a coffee spill that we were aware of. We were told no that’s ok because they would still have to bring in their carpet cleaner. Isn’t it funny that they could get all of the spots up EXCEPT for the coffee stain and we would be charged. What’s funny about that is we had a $ 200 deposit… the rug repair will conveniently cost $ 150. Apparently we were lucky that they weren’t going to replace the whole thing. Who knows what that would cost. Oh yeah, we will also owe our final water bill which we are fine with, but we were told that too would come out of our deposit. Who wants to bet that it will be $ 50? If you like the area there are other apartments that aren’t as expensive and overall are just nicer. We moved down the block into apartments that were condos. Best part is we have more space and cut our rent by $ 900. Good luck if you choose to rent here. Hope this helps!

Me and my husband moved from Puerto Rico to Alexandria, we were looking for an apartment walking distance to his new job (USPTO), and to the metro station. We were also looking for affordability and for a nice place to live in. Post was the best decision we made. The staff is attentive, the apartment is just amazing and the surroundings too. We rarely hear our neighbors and it is very peaceful. If you plan to move here, ask for Jonya and Lamine!

My wife and I have lived here for a year and have been very happy with Post Carlyle. The property is beautiful, the roof deck on the 2^nd bldg is incredible — perfect view of Old Town and many different lounge chairs for sun and shade. The staff are top notch as well. We’ve been in touch with them on multiple occasions and they are great to work with. They are very professional and make it their top priority to make tenants feel at home. There’s also LOTS to do in walking distance and the metro is only 5 minutes away. We highly recommend Post Carlyle Square.

My husband and I have lived here since 2011 and we love it. Staff are welcoming and very helpful. Building is spotless, apartments are roomy, and outdoor facilities are fantastic. I can’t recommend this place more for people looking to live within walking distance of Old Town proper and metro.

One word: Lamine.
He is literally the reason we live here. He makes our lives SO much happier, with his perpetually cheerful disposition and his unfailing greetings. We’re planning to move in a few months because we bought a house, and Lamine will be the one thing we’ll regret leaving. (Not that the rest of the building and amenities aren’t awesome, but nothing tops Lamine).
Aside from that, Post is a wonderful place to live. We’ve been here about a year and a half now, and our only complaint has been the influx of college students last summer (which seems to have subsided, mysteriously?) and some noisy neighbors. We’re on the fourth floor facing the cememtery and it’s incredibly easy to hear anyone having a conversation in the front of the building. The windows are extremely thin (and freezing cold in the winter – get insulating curtains. Seriously.) I’ll be the first to admit I’ve called the cops countless times on the rowdy 20-​somethings partying out front. Literally. Partying. As in, drunkenly devouring McDonalds on the hood of their car parked in front of the building while ironically blasting Pearl Jam. («Ironically», here, is being used in the Hipster sense of the word– which means it has no actual meaning and is merely word fluff.)
Anyway, Post is a great place to live, and management seems to fix every problem that arises – and quickly. If you tell them you want something fixed, they’ll do it. And graciously.
We’ll miss living here… Especially Lamine.

I’ve lived here six months now, and really like it. Every maintenance request has been handled the same day by efficient, pleasant workers. The front desk and office people are great. Packages are handled efficiently. My apartment is quiet, and the neighbors are friendly. I’m not a dog person, but I haven’t had any issues with the dogs in the building.
And the location is terrific, with the park across the street, the Metro so close, and the 7 – 11 and Whole Foods nearby.

I wanted to at least wait until I had been here over 6 months to pen a review for the Post Carlyle and I think that I can sufficiently do one now with some time in our space.
My wife and I moved in during March and we have had a really good experience so far. We are in one of the newer buildings and were the first tenant in our unit as well. BEing on the ground floor has really been a blessing and certainly was when we moved in as well. it’s just so much easier when you don’t have to go up and down elevators with all of your stuff. So far our neighbors have been fine.
One thing about our hall is that it is really loud when it comes to dogs. A few doors down (there is one in particular) that just barks and barks and barks. It’s really obnoxious as well. it’s not like we are not dog people, we just don’t appreciate them barking all that time — I think that is really just not being a responsible dog owner. Yes, is the Post Dog friendly? For sure — but you need to be responsible and keep you dog calm during early hours of the morning and late and night as well.
I take advantage of the continental breakfast at least 3 times a week and grab a bagel to have in our apartment. That’s a really nice treat — we also have used the community room in 601 a few times for friends and to watch a couple of games. It’s really a nice space over there.
We also use the gym almost daily as well — we are saving some money on our members since my wife cancelled hers.
So far, our experience has been really great and we hope that continues. Has it gotten more crowded since we moved in? Yes, but like any building as more people find out about it will.

Well, I have to say I’m really surprised by the low ratings. Yes this is a dog friendly apartment complex and thank god!!! There are none in this area and good ones are hard to find. This one allows large dogs believe it or not and there is a park right across the street which is perfect for walking them. I believe I did hear about the dog mess situation, but please do keep in mind Post has cleaners that come every single day to clean the common areas. Yes, some of the building materials are not as nice as they could be, but for the price it is a good deal. I never hear my neighbors so the walls appear to be solid. I enjoy my granite counter tops and floor to ceiling windows. Management is always friendly. I’ve move around a lot and have probably rented 10 different apartments in the last 10 years and so far this is my favorite. I finally found a place that will accept me and my dog. Dog haters do NOT move here, you have plenty of other options out there… give us this one place… please

We have now lived here for 2.5 years. initially there were a lot of maintenance but things seem to have settled down for the better. We like it here, not perfect but not bad either.

I don’t like to write bad reviews, but feel prospective tenants might want to hear one opinion. I lived here 5 years ago, took a break & came back and I feel it’s gone downhill. It used to be really gorgeous, quiet & clean. It’s always been expensive, but it used to have the feeling of a haven. Now it’s less clean, more hectic. New construction at 601 Holland has really increased pedestrian & vehicular traffic and the building is filled to capacity. The appliances, faucets, toilets, etc are aging and having problems and Post seems to be waiting to update them. Two faucet handles in my apt broke; the refrigerator & toilet both continue to run loudly (in different ways!); the paint is so cheap that any contact leaves a mark. Sooo many dogs; they’re fun to have around, but you do see the dog waste outside & messed-​up landscaping. The hallway carpeting seems dingier and it doesn’t smell as good as it used to. There’s been turnaround in the management office. The front desk and cleaning staff have been here a long time and they are as excellent as ever. It’s in a very safe neighborhood with a great park across the street & is walkable to King St & Eisenhower metros. However, your water bill will be high here; rents have decreased slightly but are still pretty high; and this place has just lost a lot of its luster.

I only wish I could give less than one star. Very expensive, cheaply built, and one problem with management after another. To state a few problems: months of incessant fire alarm testing (day and night), very poor security (including unlocked doors to the outside at a time when people were BREAKING INTO buildings in the complex), animal waste in the halls and elevator, etc. Management was not only not helpful, but seemed overjoyed to frustrate us at every turn. I highly, highly recommend NOT renting here.
