Barry did my hair. Updated my basic looking bleach blonde for fall and added a little purple and pink. Really happy with the results. Also got a latte and mimosa. Professionals. Loved it.

For a shampoo, haircut, style, the total was ~$ 90 (I expected much higher prices for Old Town as everything is more expensive in Old Town)

I’ve been seeing Nina for over 10 years now and she is the absolute best!!! She always does such a beautiful job with both my haircolor and cut. She has such a fun personality too, so I always look forward to my visits with her. I would highly recommend her services to anyone and everyone!

There was a time, before I began going to DeZen, that I was just an average guy with a bad haircut. Remember the bowl cut from Dumb and Dumber? Yeah, it was modeled on that but I didn’t have as much body as Jim Carrey, so it was a little bit flatter version of that. If I wanted to get a girl, I would wear a t-​shit that read «It’s not a beer gut, it’s a gas tank for a sex machine» so the ladies would all know they were dealing with a sex machine, and they would then be enticed to fool around because you know, it’s a sex machine, you have to give THAT a try, right?
But NO MORE! I have been seeing the beautiful and talented Alice at DeZen and boy has my life turned around. I no longer even wear my favorite t-​shirt (which is good because it has lots of soup stains down the front — who doesn’t love soup?). Now girls accost ME on the street left and right just to run their fingers through my gorgeous hair. If I were animated rather than real, it would look like the hair of a Disney prince (prolly Flynn Rider from Tangled — it’s kind of a Beckham like cut that Alice gave me — EVEN BEFORE BECKHAM DID IT — copycat…)
I knew it was solid when I ran into Taylor Swift at a club one night a while back. I didn’t think much of the interaction after that but appearently it made quite an impression on her because she even mentioned me in one of her songs «The fella over there with the hella good hair» she asked me to come over and shake, shake, shake. I did, but like I said, didn’t reallly think of it again until her publicist called and asked me not to reveal my identity because all the paparazzi were asking about this «mystery man with the awesome haircut» and they wanted to play it up, so I had to keep quiet.
Anyway — if you want to be transformed from a dud to a stud, go sit down in Alice’s chair at DeZen (really all the stylists there are good, Alice is just the one who I work with). She’s keeping me one step ahead of that fashion ripper-​offer David Beckham and making my «gas tank for a sex machine» t-​shit wholly unnecessary.

Get the conditioning treatment!!! AMAZING! The head massages are incredible, too!

What a great experience.
I wanted to go in for a pretty dramatic color change, and I didn’t trust my usual stylist. I had seen some of their color work and I figured, this was the place to go, and I am sooo glad I did.
Barry was my stylist and when I told him I wanted to change my near black hair to purple, he explained the process, the risks, the upkeep and he heard what I wanted and what I wanted to achieve, together we decide to go for a more dark plum than crayola bright purple. It would be better for my lifestyle, my hair and would still give me the different look I wanted.
Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, was super friendly and attentive. Barry worked really hard to not stain my skin with the bright pink-​looking dye (and was 90% successful!), and always made sure I was comfortable. He was great at making conversation and it never felt awkward, which can happen a lot with stylists. The girl who washed my hair was great, she massaged my scalp with warm water and I almost fell asleep.
The color came out fantastic, and it was BY FAR the best blow out I’ve ever had. Barry explained the entire process and even gave me some tips to do my hair at home.
I’m planning on returning soon for a haircut and for my color touch ups.
I cannot recommend this place enough!

I was craving a hair change. I hadn’t cut my hair in over a year, it’s winter, and the end of the school semester was driving me mad. My usual stylist in DC has to be booked over a month in advance and I needed a cut NOW.
I started looking at various places on Unilocal and chose this place based on the reviews. It was great that I could book an appointment online for the same day (it’s a huge level up when I’m able to book online, since my work is usually too loud to call).
It’s a very welcoming atmosphere. There is cool furniture around, and they offer you coffee, tea, water or wine. I had Lucy, who had great fun ideas for my hair, which is exactly what I wanted. I now have deep red/​purple underneath my natural medium brown hair color. My hair is shorter than I’d thought it’d be when I walked in, but it has all the layers I wanted, and ultimately I’m happy it turned out the way it did. I would consider coming back again, especially since it’s closer to my home than my normal stylist is.
It’s located in Old Town, so you do have to be prepared for the traffic and parking conditions that go with it.

Awful. Just unprofessional. Wasn’t happy… Never went back. This place is for nobody. I could get way better service for a lot less. Thanks but no thanks.

I finally bit the bullet and got my hair cut in the expensive nova area. I ended up getting full color, highlights and cut and think the price was well worth it. My stylist was Felicia and she was fabulous!!! I came in after not having my hair done for almost a year and she was very patient. I brought in a picture and she was able to give me the exact color and style I want. I have very thick curly hair and it’s been some time since I had a stylist that could do that. My meter even ran out while my color was setting so she offered to add more money to it for me. She also was very easy to carry a conversation on with. I always hate that awkward silence. My only compliant is that she was running about 20 min behind. But she made sure to get me a drink and set me up in the relaxation room with trashy mags while I waited. I defiantly will be heading back there for my hair needs!
PS. The shampoo, conditioner, hair products all smelled like fruity bubble gym which was amazing!!!

This place is awesome. Ask for either Dominique or Alice, call ahead and make an appointment.

I came to Salon DeZen with my husband, 2 year old son and 10 month old baby for a cut and color. It was a Tuesday and there were only two stylists working… so my kids were able to crawl and run around without annoying anyone. The girls were so sweet to my son who kept asking them questions. Sarah did my hair and she did such an amazing job! Not only are is the organic dye they use a hair saver, the color turns out beautiful! She was so helpful in coming up with a plan for getting my hair back to its natural blonde. I also ended with a fantastic cut and gasp, BANGS! I love them and so does everyone else. It has been about a month or so since I was there and I am STILL getting compliments on the cut and color. I highly recommend this place… maybe don’t bring the whole family, (I didn’t have a choice!) but still, come see Sarah!
(also, the salon is BEAUTIFUL!)

Since I moved to VA over 3 years ago, I had not been able to find a good stylist for curly hair until I met Dominique. She is truly an artist and my curly head of hair was her canvas! I have followed to 2 salons already and recommended her to a few curly friends who also LOVE her. If you have curly hair and are looking for a fabulous style, look no more, Dominique is the answer to your prayers :)

I have been wanting to have my hair dyed green for as long as I can remember, but I had given up trying because I’d never seen someone with the hair color that was exactly what I was looking for. When I went to salon Dezen I told Dominique what I wanted, and she immediately knew the exact color to mix. The shade works perfectly with my naturally red hair, and is very strategically placed to be able to hide it when I want a more professional look. She cut a beautiful haircut for me as well, that emphasized the few curls I have allowing me to almost never need to style it.
The rest of the staff was very friendly and nice to talk to, contributing to the welcoming atmosphere. I will definitely go back for my next haircut, and may get more adventurous with color now that I know I have a hair stylist I can trust!

Actually, in my last review my stylists name was Dominique, and my new stylists name is Dominique too… and I’m so glad I found her!
I wanted to do a wild blonde streak in my very brunette hair and Dominique came to my rescue. She gave me options on how I could have it done and she did a very good job. The whole process took like 3 hours… and 3 washes. and she was very patient. Even brought me some M&M’s whilst I was … «illuminating» my hair :-)
Everyone that works at the salon is very friendly and fun. I’ll always be coming back to Salon DeZEN! Woo! :)

I went to Salon Dezen a few months back. I found it after googling African American hair salons in Fort Washington area. I then called to make and appointment and explained that my hair was natural texture (not relaxed), but more curly that kinky ! I wanted a color and cut! I was told over the phone they had two stylets that specialized iaftrican American hair .
To my subprime e lady who did my hair was African American and had natural hair, but did not specialize in doing African American hair.
Needless to say she did a great job on my color which I guess she should have almost 200.00 $ later. The style was decent!

I will swear by Dominique. ‘Nuff said.
You want more? OK. This salon seems recently remodeled, as everything is clean and chic. I enjoyed the cleanliness, the professionalism, how the employees seemed so happy to be there and do my hair… even the wash was so relaxing and comfortable. You can’t go wrong here!

I LOVE the look of this salon. I wanted to try it out ever since the first time I walked by. I have been there twice with good results. The first time was for color, which turned out great. I later booked a cut with the same guy; however, when I showed up, they had booked my appointment on the wrong day! I know it wasn’t my error, because I was out of town on the day they had booked me for.
Oh well, that turned out ok too, because a junior stylist cut my hair, and she did quite a good job of listening to what I wanted. Despite the nice cut, I would not return, because I do not believe a salon should charge extra for a blow dry, especially when others places do not.

Thanks to Groupon, I had a mani-​pedi appt at Salon deZen in Old Town for $ 27! Good deal on its own, especially for a classy salon like this one. Often Groupon and Living Social point you to neon-​heavy holes in the wall, but this old townhouse was nothing else but a joy.
Tomiko was a hoot-​she doesn’t like Richard Gere because his eyes are too small, George Clooney-​eh, but ROCKY! SYLVESTER STALLONE! YES! She’s a macho guy type of gal. And her nail skills are pretty mean as well. I’m patting myself on the back as well for the colors I chose (just a little self-​congratulation), but chatting with Tomiko made the hour and a half (a little less) fly by. We commiserated about the lack of good men in this city (though we are both happily taken), agreed 23 is too young to have a baby, and shared our favorite colors. Hers: purple and olive green, mine: blue and green. Basically, we’re bffs.
Though I am a stickler for bargain mani-​pedis, the $ 10 off coupon that the cheerful girls at the counter gave me on my way out might — just might — bring me back for more nail time with Tomiko.

I read the Unilocal reviews, decided to give it a try because I was working in Old Town at the time.
I have short hair — «pixie cut» if you will. The stylist seemed a bit nervous at the beginning, but, I gave her a chance and after a million descriptions and pulling up photos on my iPhone I ended up looking like Charlie Brown when I left. She basically used scissors to cut my hair until it was an equal «buzz» like shape. Frightening I tell you, just frightening.
I also hate when the receptionist asks me (in front of most of the staff) «Do you like your haircut?» It’s terribly awkward, mainly when you don’t!
The salon is two floors, small, but well decorated in a «zen» like décor. The back room where you get shampooed is tiny but, my shampoo girl was super attentive and friendly.
Great location, and ugh, I wish I could remember her name, but, short haired girls should go elsewhere. I asked for someone who had experience with short hair, and I looked like a 12 year old boy fresh out of juvi.

NOTE — Robin no longer works at this establishment for waxing so I can no longer vouch for the 4-​star rating of this salon.
Came for a wax and pedicure. Everything was very clean and calming and I definitely enjoyed my experience. Robin performs magic with her wax, stays up on her training, and definitely knows her stuff when it comes to skin care, particularly for clients of color. My pedicure turned out beautiful, but I definitely needed some more scrubbing and exfoliation on the bottoms of my feet. That and parking are the only reason this wasn’t five stars (make sure you bring quarters!), but the customer service is excellent and I will probably make the trek down to Alexandria from Silver Spring again for all my waxing needs!
