Just went there to attempt to make an appointment… Tanya was the only one available and I did not like her attitude and the way she was addressing me as a first-​time client. I was told that they only take cash even though Unilocal says they accept credit cards. I decided to follow my instinct and go somewhere else. My search for a friendly hair stylist continues, alas!

Ive visited Sistas hair salon a few times this year. My first time was for a touch up with Ashley during which she informed me that the hair in the middle of my head was breaking. She was able to style it in a way that disguised the breakage.
During my second visit I did the big chop and went fully natural. Ashley was able to condition and style my hair for that cut as well.
My most recent visit was for a post braids trim with Ashley and I learned that the salon has basically been dismantled and all the stylists are scattered throughout the Landmark Mall on Duke Street. I don’t think they specialize in natural hair so I will be looking elsewhere for my natural hair care needs.

I’ve been going to Sistah’s for about 3 years now. I haven’t experienced a lot of the issues that people haven’t complained about — I would say that it is probably due to them correcting some of those bad practices (I wouldn’t return if I had similiar bad experiences) and/​or that I’m not there enough to see it (regular visits for me only amount to 4 – 6 visits/​year). Overall, my stylist generally takes good care of me and I usually schedule «good» times so that I’m «in and out» quickly (~ 2.5−3 hours including the deep condition and color). As far as the «nail salon» part — I’ve never seen any one do a set.

After going to Tanya every two weeks for two years and expressing my desire to transfer to natural using sew-​ins as a protective style I left bald. Tanya never expressed to me that my hair was thinning in the top. It has been almost a year since leaving her and I am still working on growing my hair back. Her response «whenever you do something too much It’s not Good.» I feel any Good stylist will keep you updated on the health of your hair. Tanya only cares about the money and not her clients. The salon is fine But please DO NOT GO TO Tanya. I contemplated suing her But the trauma of having to wear wigs to work because the crown of my head was bald was too great.

I had my hair done (relaxer) here a while ago. Unfortunately, I don’t remember who did my hair. To make a long story short, a large portion of the hair in the front of my head fell out and is only now starting to grow back.

This is one of my favorite shops in the DMV. I arrived early for my appt because I didn’t need my hair washed, and my stylist, Tyerra, didn’t say anything about it. She finished her lunch (sorry about that Tyerra!) and got right to work! I was in and out in under 2 hours, and I got a sew-​in! The prices went up and the salon is STILL cheaper than most, especially in this area. The place is clean, no one is trying to sell me a chicken sandwich from a cooler, and there is actually room to move. The parking lot is narrow as hell though, but there’s nothing the salon can do about that. When I can’t go to my friend Marcus, I will ALWAYS come here!

Sistah’s Salon is a great place to go… if you have the right stylist. I went in today for a wash/​blow dry, flat iron, and trim. I was supposed to have Tonya, but when I got to the salon, the lady at the counter said Drew was going to do my hair.
Drew did a good job with everything up to the flat iron. I was burned multiple times, and then she styled my hair in a way I didn’t like (and she didn’t ask how I wanted it). She also gelled one side of my hair (also didn’t ask me if I wanted that) and gave me and uneven part.
On the flip side, my little sister got her hair don by Kelsey and it looks fabulous. So far, from experience, Tyerra, Tonya, and Kelsey do good jobs. I’ll be seeing one of them next time!

I have been coming to Sistah’s for over 15 years. The services is professional and the styles are up to date. Walk-​ins are always accepted.

I love this salon and my stylist Tonya. I have been a satisfied customer since spring 2010 when i moved here. I come almost every two weeks and love how my hair comes out. My hair has grown and is healthy thanks to her skills! I also love the availability to go in on evenings or on Sundays.

This is a great barbershop! Absolutely the best one in this area. I tried a few others first, but none of them come close in terms of the atmosphere and, of course, the cuts. I go to Billy (first chair in the door) and have never had a single complaint about how my cut turned out. He remembered the exact style I wanted after the first cut and has hooked me up just as well every week since then. He’s also great with kids. The other barbers all seem to have regular customers too… probably the first shop I’ve ever been to where there wasn’t a «don’t go that guy over there» warning lol. Great prices, great cuts and great barbers. Go here and you won’t be disappointed!

I had the worst hair cut and color I have ever had in my entire life at this salon. This was a few months ago and I have never been back. My hair looked like a helmet. I just paid my bill and left. I think the stylist’s (I am using the term very loosely here) name was Azure or some color. She seriously lacked skills. Other customers seemed happy and satisfied. When I got home, my BF said, ‘I thought you were going to the hairdresser’.

I used to go all the time! Great service and professional!

So all I needed was a chop (no shampoo or style)…Tiara can CUT! I didn’t wait but like 10 minutes, I’ll be back for future cuts.

I did all kinds of research on the Natural Hair Salons within DC Metro. All I wanted was a deep conditioner and then cut the remaining stringy relaxer ends off of my transitioning hair. No style, just cut it! If I trusted myself with barber scissors, I would’ve just did it myself. But I wanted a professional to do the first chop. EVERY natural salon within the area started at $ 55.for just the cut. RIDICULOUS. The natural salons are truly taking advantage of the natural hair ladies.
So after scheduling an appointment with an overpriced salon on U St, I remembered my old salon that I used to go to when I first moved to the area for my relaxed hair. Tiara was my stylist and I just cannot recall why I stopped going. I dont remember having any problem with her whatsoever. I called Sistahs Salon and asked if they did natural hair. I think I screamed hallelujah when they said they did and quoted a lovely price! I canceled my U St appointment immediately.
I came in about 20 minutes before my 2pm Friday appointment and was attended to somewhat quickly. The shop was pretty quiet. While Sharday (I know I’m butchering her name) was finishing up another client, the Shampoo Girl immediately got started on my shampoo and deep conditioning (I wasnt sure what the etiquette was about inquiring if they used natural hair friendly products so I didnt ask. I figured it was only one wash. If they dont have natural hair products yet, deduct one star lol). I didnt give 5 stars b/​c the shampoo girl didnt take a wide tooth comb through my hair with the conditioner. She just rubbed it in, put on my plastic cap, and put me under the dryer. #dontbeafraidofthecurls!
Sharday was so friendly and professional and she made sure I was okay with the length she would be cutting off. I am so happy with the cut. It’s feminine and you cannot beat the price in this area. They are now my go-​to place for future trims.
I highly recommend Sistah’s Salon for a BC. Don’t waste your money on those Natural Salon crooks unless you want a full style. but for all I know, Sistahs Salon could do natural styles as well. I wouldnt know.

I have been going to Sistahs for almost a year now and have been very pleased with my services at Sistahs Salon. I am a client of Tiera’s and she does an excellent job on short hair. My hair was very damaged (I had no edges or bangs!) when I first started going to Tierra and she really helped me get my hair back to a healthy state. I have rarely had to sit and wait for long periods of time and they all like to get their clients in and out. Everyone I have referred has thanked me later.

After years of doing my own hair because I couldnt find a good stylist that didn’t charge and arm and a leg for a relaxer or sew-​in, I started going to Sistah to get my hair braided. I didn’t trust the stylists to do my sew-​ins because none of theirs looked like how I wanted mine styled, so I just had the stylist cornrow my hair, and i did my own sew –in. This went on for about 9 months. Around December, just before Christmas, I had a reunion coming up in February that I wanted to try a new hairstyle for, a sew-​in with a closure, so i asked the manager, Glennie, who there knew how to do closures and she suggested a stylist. I wanted to give her a chance to prove her skills, so i had her do two sew-​ins for me, neither with a closure, just to see how they would turn out. The first was ENTIRELY too tight, and she wouldn’t leave my edges out so for the first week, i had bumps around the edge of my scalp. The style itself was just okay. After it grew out, I hadn’t found anyone else to do it but I was too busy to do my own, so i went back. This time, it came out WONDERFULLY, and I left very happy! We had a consult about the closure and she didn’t seem to ‘get’ how I wanted it to lay in the front, so i emailed her pictures of what i wanted. She said ok, she could do it. So, I bought the closure, $ 150. On the day of the appt, a Friday in February just before my reunion, my appt was scheduled for 1pm. once she got close to installing the closure, I asked her if i could turn around and watch, nervous that it wouldn’t be right, but she said «don’t worry, i got this.» So, at the end, when i did turn around, I was disappointed. the closure didn’t look good. it wasn’t BAD but it wasn’t what i’d asked for, and neither was the style. it was now 7pm (6 hours!) on a Friday and I didn’t have time to debate about it, so I figured I’d just go home and fix it myself. Later, I had to have a friend cut it out because it had been installed all wrong and it was irreparable. I spent the whole night trying to re-​install it myself just so I would have SOME semblance of a hairstyle for my reunion the next day.
A few days later, I found a stylist to do it right. I was so mad, i decided to wait and call the salon after I calmed down. When I did, I spoke with the same manager who immediately asked why i didn’t just come back to have it repaired. I explained that i didn’t have time that night, and frankly, i wasn’t comfortable having the stylist touch my hair again, nor did i want to see her again because it might be awkward because i was so mad. I only asked for the extra money I’d paid to have the closure installed, which was about $ 50. She said she’d have to talk to the stylist and ger ‘her side of the story’, and that i should call her back on tuesday. well, 2 weeks later, after calling back every day beginning on Tuesday, I got NO ANSWER at all. every day that i called, my calls were sent to the voice mail/​answering machine. for TWO WEEKS, even on weekends!!! So, one day, on a whim, I called from my regular phone, and got no answer. Then, i hung up and called from a different number, and someone picked up on the second ring. Ha! i didn’t recognize the voice of the person who answered, but I asked to speak to the manager and they said she was unavailable but asked to take a message. I politely let her know that i’d been calling for weeks and didn’t appreciate how they had avoided my calls especially after the mgr TOLD me to call her back. That I would leave a nice little review on Unilocal and anywhere else I could post to let people know to avoid this place, and hung up. I still never got a call back and abandoned any hope of getting my money back ever.
Don’t waste your time or your money, no matter how desperate you are. They don’t care about you or your hair, they just want bodies in the chairs. The other reviewers were right, they do overbook like crazy, take personal calls, walk away while doing your hair, etc. i would expect those things in the hood salons, but not this one, not for the prices they charge.

I used to go to Sistah’s on a regular basis about 10 years. It didn’t matter if you scheduled an appointment or not, you ended up being there for hours. I used to have everything done from relaxers, cuts, to sewn-​in weaves.
Over time I noticed the salon was starting to look dingy, various work stations were not so clean. Then my stylist there moved away, so I started going to other salons. A few months ago I went back to Sistah’s because my regular stylist was on vacation. A male stylist (don’t remember his name) took me immediately. I got a touch up relaxer. Overall he did a good job, but the salon is way past due for a renovation.

It was my first experience with this salon and will sure be my last experience. I was serviced by a male stylist who claimed he had 15 years of experience doing this. He could not understand or be patient for simple things I want done. He did not even spend 15 minutes with my hair and started to say things like he is annoyed with my hair style and tired of cutting my hair. At some point, he flatly said I’m not going to do anything with your hair anymore. If you were wondering what I was asking, let me tell that it is very basic and reasonable. The person did not have one bit patience and openness to any idea.
Worse, he was talking all personal story and flirty language with the receptionist lady, sometimes even stopped his work talking to her. Annoying.
My hair was cut so unevenly was there were a few rugged (uneven) spots. He charged $ 18, did not accept credit card, only cash. Told me there was a ATM machine if I did not have cash. BTW the ATM machine looked creepy too. I was thinking I should have gone somewhere else. All this on my Birthday!

I used to go to Sistah’s regularly, and had to stop because their booking practices are ridiculous… and I don’t like a whole bunch of men looking at my butt as I walk to the shampoo bowl (as they talk/​holler about the cabaret they went to last night)
I would actually call and say are you running behind before I made the trek… And of course they would say no… and of course that was a lie…
Tiara and Cindy were my stylist along with the beauty school drop out who they actually let apply chemicals…
Have not been back and will not be back since Cindy opened up her own shop…
