At our oil change location in Alexandria, we welcome the opportunity to serve our friends and neighbors. Maintaining your car takes more than just an oil change. That is why we also offer the automotive maintenance services your car will need: Tire rotations, air filters, wiper blades, transmission services, radiator flushes, differential services, fuel injection cleanings, fuel filter services, serpentine belt replacement and more. We also have a Sunoco gas station with a convenience store.

History

Established in 1997.

In 1987, Jason Yates purchased the Yates Automotive station at 317 E. Braddock Street in Alexandria from his father, John. In 1997, Jason opened the second location in Kingstowne. Yates Express Lube was born. Along with a Sunoco Gas Station and convenience store, which is open 24 hours, Yates Express Lube and auto repair has been taking care of the people of Alexandria ever since.

You can always tell it’s a Yates station by how wonderful the landscaping and holiday decorations are. Even if you don’t see Jason when you visit, you can be assured he is working in the background on a daily basis and striving to make us all a little bit better.

Jason Yates, youngest of 5 sons of John and Lena Yates, spent his whole life growing up around the family business with his parents and brothers. He has always been interested in go-​carts, cars and motorcycles; basically anything with an engine on it! As a child, Jason would ride with his father to the station on a daily basis where he worked every summer and after school as he got older.

Between the service stations, auto parts stores and taxicabs his father owned, Jason was always busy. While he was in high school, he moved around to work in different locations, including the hardware store that was located on the corner of Commonwealth and Monroe Avenues. Having the entire family involved in the business exposed him to so many different things and it proved to be a fantastic childhood

By 1980, Jason returned to the present Braddock Road location where he has been for the past 30 years building the business with his wife, Loren. His son, Jason, Jr.

I went here for an oil change. They’re supposed to top off all of the fluids when doing an oil change. Well, they didn’t top off the fluids in my car. Two weeks after my getting an oil change at this location, my car begins to overheat on the highway in the middle of rush hour. After panicking, I called the nearest car repair place and slowly drove there. After checking out my car, they tell me that there’s no coolant on my car, and proceed to ask when’s the last time I had an oil change. I immediately remembered that I went to Yates for an oil change, but obviously they didn’t do a complete job.
The next day I call Yates and ask what does their oil change include. The manager tells me that they’re supposed to top off all fluids, so I ask why wasn’t that done when I came in. I tell him the issue and he tells me that I must have a leak because they topped off everything, blah blah blah. He then asks me what car I was driving and what day. If he was so sure that they did right by my car why the need for all the info. He said that he wold check the tapes and call me back, and of course I haven’t heard from him since.
I’d exercise a lot of caution before using this location. What if they forgot to put oil in my car and totally ruined my engine?! I’m sure he’d say they weren’t at fault for that too! Don’t go here unless you want to find yourself almost stranded.

This place is so professionally run it puts others to shame. The customer service is friendly and not pressured or stressed at all. While waiting in the store area next door the attendants were great as well.

I have used this Yates in the past. However on my last visit, this place worried me when the service guy put a piece of wood to hold up my hood. I had to tell the guy where to find the hood support.
They refused to change my oil citing an «engine oil leak». After I got home, I checked this «engine oil leak.» I found that it wasn’t the engine leaking oil; it was the manual transaxel leaking! The oil leak from the transaxel is in a whole ‘nother area. It’s not part of the engine!
It’s pretty bad that as a woman can tell a transaxel leak from an engine leak!
The people at Yates took one look at my car, a 1992. They simply did not want to bother with it because of its age. My ’92 is in better shape and has lower mileage than many of the other cars in the area!

Let me update this… I took my van in for some minor work. They told me that it had to be serviced at the old town office. So they took it there and when I picked it up the same thing happened. The Van just stopped turning, turned off, then parts came out from underneath. It was towed back to the Old town office and «fixed». I picked up back up and the SAME thing happened again! The manager came out and got the car and brought it back in again. Since this has happened I have a leak (power steering) and that leak has messed up some hoses in my car. I went to another mechanic who really fixed my car. I spent around 1500 and my Van still did not work. I give 2 stars only because the manager was responsive and tried to help.

Yates is expensive, but I’ve gone there for maintenance because it’s in a convenient location. Except now their mechanics are rudely yelling at me, so I won’t be going back.
On Saturday, I went to get a car inspection and there was a line of about five cars. When the line moved forward all the cars pulled up one space except for the car right in front of me. I thought, OK, strange, but no big deal. When the line moved again, all the cars moved up except for the one in front of me. At this point I gave a tap on my horn; after a minute, I got out of my car to request that that the other driver move forward. To my surprise, there was no one in the car! So I pulled around the empty car and got in line as normal. If you’re waiting for movie tickets or whatever, if you leave the line you lose your spot, right? And you don’t get to just leave some object there like your coat or bag to hold your spot.
After a minute a Yates mechanic came out and barked at me to back up. I asked why. He got in the empty car; I didn’t move. Then he got out and again rudely ordered me to back up. I asked, why? He told me it was first come first serve, so I said, there was no one in the car, the car didn’t move, that person has lost his spot. The guy yelled at me again to move. I told him that I was taking my business elsewhere. There are plenty of other garage is around here with courteous service and better prices that will treat you fairly and not be stupid and disrespectful.

I just moved to Fort Belvoir from Alabama and need a state inspection and emissions test in order to transfer my vehicle registration and plates. This location was very fast and easy. I was out within 20minutes and the service was friendly. The vehicle inspections testing is first come first serve. Therefore, I do recommend getting there a little early. I will definitely be back to service my vehicle.

Do not waste your time here! Completely over priced and the management is beyond rude. Spend over $ 600 for «Front Break Kit» ask the shop to change an expiration sticker on my car and couldn’t even peel off and stick on a sticker when your paying over $ 600? Poor customer service! Go anywhere else and I’m sure you will be more happy !!! Biggest rip off ever.

I contacted Yates again because I heard something in my tire and I’ve had tires blow before (on 395), so I never take a chance with tires. I called and asked if I could swing by in 5 minutes. Not only did they accommodate me, but ended up checking my tires for free. Mostly, because it ended up being nothing, but still. They took a few minutes out of their day to help me out, so I’m going to take a few out of mine to write a review for their awesome customer service! Thanks again, guys!

That WAS my oil change place, untill today.
The guy who took care of my car did not even know where is the oil filter, so I had to show him where it is.
Another guy came to help, but he simply does not know how to unscrew the cap for the filter.
After nearly half an hour figuring out how to change the oil, after I brought my own oil filter, because they does no carry any of those oil filters, because are too expensive ($ 12) they told me that I am all set, until I started the car and it was all shaking.
After another mechanic was rushing me to leave and assuring me that everything with the car was fine and I should leave, I opened the hood myself to figure out what was wrong, it turned out that the oil cap was not tighten properly.
I had 2 of my tires checked, because the ‘service’, guy did not bother to go around and check the passenger’s side tires, maybe that’s safe enough, I don’t know…
All that costs little more than $ 100 not including the oil filter???
I did half of the work myself and paid $ 102, next time will spend my money buying equipment and do the oil change myself.
NOT GOING BACK THERE!!!
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!!!

I come here pretty often to tank up the baby beamer. I needed to check the tires, and the free air machine was down. So, I asked the Yates Express guys if they could do it — and they did, quite cheerfully.
What I did notice is this is a very clean operation: the floors, the tools, the uniforms. This isn’t the old greasy ops. Nice guys, clean place and very pleasant.

Quick in and out with high quality, polite and professional staff all around. Prices are on the low-​side of average, and they’ll give you a free car wash with oil-​change service. The only thing that is really missing, is a waiting area. But there is a Starbucks across the parking lot that works great if you have to wait long.

absolutely the most shocking prices in area. I went in for a $ 16 inspection. failed and after researching other nearby mechanics have found that their prices are 4 times what others are charging. Perhaps. they saw a single female and $$ signs? What they didnt know is that I have friends in this industry and know when Im being ripped off. New mechanic took time to show me my car and why they failed me, but said it was a borderline fail. PLEASE do your homework if you feel that their prices are not in line!

I stopped by the back section on 11÷05÷14 for what I hoped would be some quick auto service because my tire pressure indicator lit up. I was greeted by the friendly Connor and told to pull right through. I didn’t even have to get out of the car. He checked the pressure on all tires and gave me some extra air in the ones that were a little low. Seems like my indicator is just very sensitive! Everything was free and probably took a total of 5 minutes! I’ve also had many a pleasant experience gassing up here.

This is my go-​to mechanic for my Prius. The mechanics are knowledgable and polite. They know you’re in a hurry so they try to get you out quickly, and they know you don’t want to spend too much so they help you decide what repairs can wait vs what needs to be done now. You have to love a place where the staff says things like «you don’t need to replace that right now, but start budgeting for it in the next 6 months». Sure, I could probably find a place that was a little cheaper on labor, but I feel like I’m in good hands here, and they deserve the pay they get!
Side note: I know this isn’t a big deal but they have a female mechanic. It’s just nice to see a woman in a field where you don’t see many women. :)

The mechanics working there are cool and helpful. My problem is with the prices for an oil change. I paid $ 90 for a full synthetic oil change. They charge $ 10 a bottle (I used 5 bottles) for the oil which is fair but then charge $ 40 for the labor. Honestly $ 40 for the labor to change oil is overpriced by at least $ 20. I could have gotten 3 regular oil changes at any dealership for the price they charged for 1 full synthetic! It’s funny how much Yates has jacked up their price of the synthetic oil change service over the years. The first time I got a full synthetic oil change in 2009 it was only $ 50!

On the coldest day ever, my tire decides it wants to go to sleep. I stopped by here to see if they could assist. They assisted me like it was 80 degrees out. Professional and free. They helped me find my wheel lock (girl-​card) and took the tire off to ensure it had no leaks. I had to give the tech a big tip for assisting. I LOVE GREAT Customer service. TOP NOTCH.

So my beloved Roadbeast, a 1989 Crown Vic LX, failed to weather our most recent snow storm. I backed up over a jagged piece of ice which pierced my gas tank, and before I knew it, I was desperately searching for a place that wouldn’t take advantage of my compromised situation. In the automotive repair world, there are so many thieves out there that the good ones have to be treasured.
I had some dealings with Yates Express Lube in the past and knew that they would treat me fairly, so I drove across town to seek them out. My auto tech Megan, who was simply amazing, soon found the problem and confirmed that there was indeed a pinhole puncture in the tank. She assuaged my fears with a very reasonable quote and the guys at the shop stayed within the quote. At no time did I feel that I was being «put together» for a higher price. Megan and the other techs were in constant contact, as I check up on the Roadbeast regularly. They offered transportation to and from the shop, and confirmed that a shard of ice could have punctured my tank. It seems that some of my friends had their doubts on that matter:
«There is no way that could happen.»
«Did you see Titanic?»
«Yes, of course. I love that movie.»
«Well, Kate Winslet, if ice could bring down the Titanic, I’m sure it could scuttle the Roadbeast»
So not only did I win the argument, I one the battle of the repair with Megan and Express Lube’s help. I will most definitely return here for my Roadbeast repairs… just not too soon I hope.

Stopped by this morning in the bitter cold to get air for my tires. The wind chills were below zero and my attempts to add air at their sister station across the street failed.
A real nice guy out back on a break, immediately came up to my car as I was driving in and very cheerfully asked what he could do for me. When I explained I needed air, he professionally checked my door sticker to see how much air my tires required, added air and got me on my way.
The can-​do attitude was very much appreciated. Many thanks.

Everytime I have come to the Express lube to get any work done on my car the mechanics have been friendly and knowledgeable. They don’t try to rip you off or sell you things you don’t need. They’re very good at taking customer cues and knowing when a customer goes in for a certain things that we want that certain thing done and don’t want a whole lot of unnecessary hub bub about how screwed up their car is and how they can fix it.
I know my cars is a piece of crap… it’s a Chrysler. The mechanic that did the oil change in my car last month was awesome. I showed up at 745 in the morning without an appointment, he immediately took my car into the garage and within 15 minutes my oil change done and I was on my way. The mechanic and I even joked around about how crappy Chryslers are and I really appreciate that sense of humor since I really think Chryslers are pieces of shit. I’ve never had a bad experience here so I will continue to use them as my go-​to mechanic shop when I need quick and efficient service.
The one drawback to this place is that, like a previous poster said, the gas is very expensive. But honestly everything Kingstowne and Northern Va period is expensive, so I’m not shocked there. The associates in the gas stations snack shop are equally as friendly as the mechanics. They really just make you leave there with a smile which is not how one normally leaves a mechanic’s shop.
And if you check in you get $ 5 off an oil change!
