Dr. Jeffery Shiau Optometrist

This review was written by my boyfriend, a «prospect» patience of Dr. Shiau.
I came here 3 weeks ago for an eye exam and wanted to order new contacts. Since it was only a few minutes away from my house so I decided to pay a visit. First of all, I had an appointment but I still had to wait for over an hour for him to see me.
And there wasn’t anyone in the office except for me. The receptionists were all unprofessional and uneducated. They just kept saying, «we’ll have to ask the doctor/we’ll have to confirm with the doctor…»
He examined my eyes and introduced me to some of the «good» contact brands that only his store offers. Since it was my first time here, I had few questions to ask him. He was unwilling to write a contacts prescription unless you purchase the contacts from him. He was unwilling to disclose any details regarding my prescription until I questioned him 3+ times.
This is unacceptable! I’ve never been to an optometry place so unprofessional and unwilling to help. I decided to never come back here again. The next day I went to Costco and requested for the same thing. Costco was able to help me with all my needs without any questions ask! I went ahead and ordered everything through Costco and never been happier.
Please stay away from this place!!! Avoid at all cost!

I’m sure the service is great, but MUCH higher priced than other optometrists in the area. Contact lens exam I was just quoted «80 dollars PLUS a 50 dollar fitting fee» Are you kidding me? The entire visit costs around 80 elsewhere.

Well, I got a new job 6 months ago, and they provide VSP insurance. So I looked up and found Dr. Jeffery Shiau.
At first I was hesitate about changing eye doctors, but the benefits of having vision insurance is paying less out of pocket for exams, contacts, glasses, etc.
So one Saturday, I just walked I and was informed that due to a few cancellations at that time, they could see me (no pun intended), hehehehehe. I met w/​Dr. Shiau, who is a very informative and nice doctor. Made me feel very comfortable from the get-​go.
Did I fail to mention that Dr. Shiau is a nice young fellow as well? You «youngeons» will feel really comfortable around him too.
He’s very detailed and takes his time to ensure the eye prescription will be the optimum best. He fitted me with some daily wears to try out for a week, which I love. Actually, he gave me two different makers of daily wear contacts so that I can pick out which ones work best for me.
I also inquired about laser surgery, and he referred me to a doctor. I was curious and asked him if having his patients who require contacts/​eye glasses get their eyes corrected by a laser, doesn’t that take money away from him; and why would he refer people if that would be the case? He simply said, «People will always need an Optometrist, so no I don’t worry about referring my patients that want to have that elective surgery done.» I thought that was very generous of him, I’d think most eye doctors would try to scare the heck out of a potential laser surgery patient.
And Robert, his assistant at the front desk is very knowledgeable about billing and fittings of glasses as well. He helped me pick out a nice pair of prescription glasses for those days wherein I want to watch TV in bed w/​out my contacts so I can knock the hell out.
I was lucky enough to walk-​in, you may not be, so I say you call and make an appointment right away. You’ll see (no pun intended) what I’m talking about. ..

I used to go to Dr Lindens in Pasadena but there was always too many patients waiting around and it was always packed. I checked with my insurance from work to see if any other optometrist was closer to home and without a crowd of people. At this optometrist you get more personal service than you would at Lindens.

Went to this doctor the staff here give amazing service. Recommending to all my friends and family. Will come here next time I need an eye exam or get new glasses.

First time coming here after switching a lot of eye doctors due to their poor explanations or rudeness and I am so happy to finally have found one who is caring enough and kind.
Dr. Shiau is really informative and tells you everything you need to hear upfront. He might be young but don’t judge a book by its cover! His explanations are very clear and if you’re ever confused about anything, he’s happy to answer your questions. However, contacts fitting charge is a little expensive. :(
The two lady assistants up front are really helpful as well and kind. The lady that helped me with the general eye exam was really nice and every time we were doing something new, she explained to me first so I wouldn’t be clueless and that’s what every doctor or assistant should do. And the lady who explained to me about contacts, glasses, and all the fees at the end was also very nice and informative. She took things slow and answered our questions to make sure my mom and I understood.

Early Morning visit, recently obtained my new Oakley reading glasses and I needed a adjustment. Was their first customer of the day and the ladies were so helpful and fixed my issue with my glasses! Just like that ! Great service !

This place has great service, ordered some contacts from these guys and came quick. Great customer service! Ms Maggie answered my every question and was the best overall. Highly recommend this place.

Dr. Shiau is very professional in helping me with my eye care needs. The staffs are very patient with helping me with choosing my glasses. So, I got my first glasses for everyday use and they are perfect. You guys are awesome!

It appears that when Dr. Zezula retired and sold his practice, the exceptional customer service left with him. I woke up with eye irritation (I suspected pink eye) and needed to see the Dr. ASAP. In my 17+ yrs of seeing Dr. Zezula, he would’ve taken me in a heart beat and would have only charged me the co-​pay (and would’ve left with a prescription as well). However, Dr. Shiau’s receptionist said I should go see an ophthalmologist and/​or I would have to pay a ridiculous fee (it was over $ 100). She was rude, not helpful and/​or empathetic to my situation. I will NEVER visit this practice again.

I had been a loyal patient of Dr. Zezula for well over 16 years. However, since Dr. Shiau took over the practice there is zero customer service. The receptionist made no effort to retain me as a patient after I expressed some concerns over the unreasonable increase in prices of disposable contact lenses. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I rarely give full 5 stars to a business unless the experience is exceptional and I must say, Dr. Shiau’s office is one of high caliber.
In the past, I never had a solid optometry place — I was bouncing back and forth with different ones and there hasn’t been one that I feel 100% comfortable with.
I was going to the Edward Renaissance to watch a movie one day and saw that there’s an optometry near there; — since it was time for my eye exam, I thought, what the heck, let’s give it a try. I called the following day to make an appointment.
Making the Appointment: the staff member taking down my info is extremely detailed and considerate. And the day before my appointment, Dr. Shiau’s office gave me a friendly reminder phone call regarding my appointment.
Day of Appointment: As I walked into the office, i was greeted by the friendly staff and an immediate cozy warmth feeling. The staff was extremely helpful and got me through the check-​in process quick and easy. I saw the doctor come out of a room– as he came out, he saw me checking in and welcomed me to his office. I waited no more. The wait time was short and I was escorted to the check up room.
The Check-​up: One of the doctor’s assistant perform a simple eye test on me (pressure test) and then was led into another room where Dr. Shiau came in shortly. Although some might say Dr. Shiau looks young, but his technique, skills and mannerism is professional and on par with other tenured professionals. He explained everything in great detail, told me ways to keep my eyes healthy and even threw in some chat about the Lakers! Dr. Shiau is very personable and I definitely feels he cares about his patients. Seems to me he rather spend quality time with you rather than focus on high patient turnovers — which is rare nowadays.
After the check up, i was led out to the glasses selection area. The staff member Robert explained to me the different brands of glasses and styles. Dr. Shiau’s office has a HUGE variety of name brand glasses at an affordable price. I settled for a pair of Pro-​Design glasses which i am very happy with. Throughout this selection process, Robert was not pushy and I did not feel any pressure to choose any specific frames or brand of glasses.
My pair of glasses should be available in 2 weeks and I am confident my experience will be as great as my initial visit.
All in all, my experience with Dr. Shiau has been awesome. I HIGHLY recommend anyone to see him for your eye care. I will definitely continue using Dr. Shiau for my future eye exams. Ironically, I should be thanking my friends who wanted to watch that movie at Edwards Renaissance theater — because if it wasn’t for that day, i wouldn’t have notice this gem of an optometry in the heart of San Gabriel Valley.

I loooveee this optometry. The staff there is super nice and friendly. The font desk clerk Jennifer was a great help when i was trying to book my appointment. She was extremely patient with me and made sure she gave me the appointment that was most convenient for me.
I was a bit hesitant to come here since i knew the business just changed owners. However im so glad i tried this place out. Although Dr. Shaiu is a younger doctor he sure knows what hes talking about. He was very informative and made me feel extremely comfortable when asking questions. I really enjoyed the larger selection designer frames they have since they did not have that in the previous optometry i would go to. I am really glad i gave this place a try.

I have visited this location with the previous Dr. (Dr. Zezula) and recently have come to the understanding that a new Dr. (Dr. Shiau) was taking over this office as Dr. Zezula was retiring. Dr. Zezula was great with patient care so I was a bit hesitant with the new optometrist but I decided to give it a go anyway.
Dr. Zezula and Dr. Shiau had a bit of different styles when it came to the exam, as to be expected. Dr. Shiau is a younger doctor but was incredibly thorough during his exam. He explained what the conditions of my eyes were (which are worsening as I get older, unfortunately) and made recommendations for top of the line care and options for my glasses. They also had a few different samples of what the vision would be under different types of coatings etc. to be able to detect the difference between a standard lens and other types of treatment.
He made sure to talk to his assistants about what kind of glasses I was looking for and gave them the story of my eyes and in turn his staff was very helpful and were patient with me as I shopped oh SO SLOWLY for a new pair of frames (but there was a reason for this!). I noticed about the office was that there was a plethora of whole new designer frames that they didn’t have before… which also made it a bit difficult for me to decide, but I definitely have no qualms about coming back for my next pair. Dr. Zezula I will be sad to see you go, but thanks Dr. Shiau and your staff for saving me the burden of having to find another optometry office for my eyecare needs.
