$ 35 /​per hour — Start playing Rock, Pop Songs, Lead Guitar, Improvising & Classical right away by Ear, Pictures & Tab! All ages welcome, immediate openings.

I will download & learn songs that you suggest, as well as offer my own suggestions, to make a list custom tailored to you, beginning from the first day we talk. My focus is on teaching specific songs or pieces. Rhythm, counting, ear training & theory are introduced in the course of learning each particular piece. This song-​centered approach gives a concrete focus & something to take home & practice.

Lessons are $ 35/​hr, private, one hour weekly, in my home studio, or now available remotely by Skype. I’m a very experienced teacher, making my living in guitar instruction for 35 years. I have a big collection of Recordings & Arrangements– no books needed on your part.

I’m in Altadena at 2917 Emerson Way, near near Marengo Av & E Altadena Dr. I also serve Pasadena.

I’ve since moved up to SF, but sitting here playing my guitar thinking how glad I am to have taken instructions from Roark.
Before seeing Roark, I had tried to teach myself with Youtube and guitar books, but didn’t get very far. Roark starts from DAY ONE teaching you a real song (I learned Good Riddance by Green Day)! That’s right, no waiting for months learning chords and music theory until you are «allowed» to play a real song — he gets how to keep the student engaged. I took lessons with Roark for about a year and can’t believe how much I learned in that time — true credit to an amazing instructor. Cheers Roark — keep being amazing!

Been taking lessons w/​Roark for the last 6 months since I found him on Unilocal!When I started I had 0 knowledge of on guitar playing. From the 1st lesson we went straight into playing songs that I wanted & started playing chords right away. Roark suggests alternate ways of playing chords if we think that some r a little difficult.
Roark knows the type of music that I like & recognizes chords right away even if hasn’t heard a song in a long x. If he has doubt or can’t remember a detail he’s «down to earth» enough to look up a tab or download song or vid. Once I wanted to learn a song in spanish that he had never heard. After he listened to it the 1st x he recognized the chords & we started practicing it.
Roark is very friendly & patient. He also listens to & makes suggestions. He has a flexible schedule & his price is reasonable for an hour of personal lessons.
I’m always looking 4ward to lesson-​night to review & work on new stuff.

I took classes with Roark for about 2 years straight. I had never played the guitar in my life. He is great! Very patient and makes sure you play the songs and music style you are interested in. Highly recommend Roark. I would still be taking his classes if my schedule allowed!

Back in high school we were each handed an instrument and told to make a sound. I got the guitar, strummed a dissonant noise, everybody laughed and the teacher said, «Music clearly isn’t for you.» A scant 25 years later I dared try again, and Roark is the man who made it happen.
I’m not naturally gifted, but Roark is endlessly patient and generous of spirit. My lessons have quickly become my favorite part of the week, and I’m happy to say that I’m getting better. If you’ve ever thought about learning to play guitar and you’re looking for a kind, mellow teacher with a great ear and a dedication to nuance, Roark is your man!

I was told over 20 years ago by a guitar instructor at a community college that he couldn’t teach me because I was tone deaf. It was only after a musician friend of mine told me, years later, that I wasn’t tone deaf but that was a bad instructor that I decided to give lessons another chance. I’m glad I did and I’m glad I chose Roark. I’ve been taking lessons for about ten months now and I’m very pleased with the instruction I’ve received and have no plans on stopping any time soon. Roark is friendly, provides a comfortable learning environment and is an excellent teacher. I’m a teacher myself so I’m always very critical of other instructors. Roark is outstanding.

Just came back from my first lesson… what a treat!
He really makes playing fun, in a way that no other teacher I’ve gone to has been able to. What I like is that you choose the songs you want to learn, and the theory, technique and advice comes out of that song. Also, he has such a good rate that I don’t feel guilty for «splurging» on a lesson, and I can go every week.
I’m already counting down the days until our next session. I’m so excited!!!

Roark is an amazing teacher! I bought my guitar a few years ago and tried to teach myself but couldn’t progress any more on my own. After starting my lessons with Roark, I saw a definite improvement after my first few sessions. He uses the time very well, not wasting time and making sure you learn the songs and techniques that are best suited for your level. I also really like that he’s not part of a big company that overcharges for lessons! I looked around at a number of places and they all charged more than Roark. I definitely recommend him!

I went to Roark Hunnicutt based on the previous review. The lessons are individualized and you learn the music/​songs you want to play and it’s not based on a set lesson plan. Roark’s a great teacher and I recommend him to any body interested in learning to play the guitar, no matter what level!
