Specialties
The Amherst Brewing Company is a full-service brewpub located in Amherst, Massachusetts. Our menu ranges from traditional pub fare, including fish and chips, burgers, homemade soups, and entrees to the unusual, such as fried pickles, monster pretzels, and fried Oreo sundaes. We have plenty for vegetarians, too. Many of our menu items are homemade, and we also have daily specials featuring creations from our kitchen. Our restaurant offers a roomy interior – which is ideal for family dining, watching sports, and hosting events – high ceilings, more space to brew, and a substantial outdoor patio for warm weather dining.
History
Established in 1997.
Established in 1997 by a small group of investors, the ABC originally occupied the lower level of the former First National Bank building off North Pleasant Street. Over time, ABC went through three expansions. The first took place in 2002 with the creation of a game room and lounge on the second floor called «The Upstairs at ABC». In 2004, the upstairs was expanded by adding a larger bar, two more pool tables, and other facilities. In 2008, we expanded the downstairs dining room, creating a new entrance and adding much-needed space to the kitchen and storage facilities. A retail nook was created to display ABC merchandise and growlers for sale from the brewery.
Our most recent and biggest move was to 10 University Drive, which was formerly occupied by Gold’s Gym, and before that, a supermarket. The space offers a roomy interior – which is ideal for family dining, watching sports, and hosting events – high ceilings, more space to brew, and a substantial outdoor patio for warm weather.
Meet the Business Owner
John K.
Business Owner
The Amherst Brewing Company was incorporated in 1997, the culmination of a dream of the principal owner, John Korpita. Starting out as a homebrewer in 1972, the first batches he «brewed» were more of the science experiment variety and with the limited and somewhat primitive ingredients available at the time, were more akin to wine than beer. With the passage of a law by President Jimmy Carter, homebrewing was legalized in 1978. Homebrew shops started to appear and as ingredients became more readily available, the beginning of what was to become the homebrewing industry we see today was born. Classes and seminars on brewing beer added to the increasing information becoming available, taking homebrewing to a new level. It was at one of these classes in 1979 that John learned the proper steps to brewing and creating beer recipes.
