History

Established in 1986.

The Alaska Botanical Garden was started by a group of volunteers in 1986 and was opened to the public in 1993. We are a 501c3 non-​profit and receive no state or municipal funding for operations. All operating funds are raised through entry fees, donations, membership dues, program fees and corporate sponsorship.

Meet the Manager

Brie X.

Manager

Being from the east coast, Brie has always had a love for the ocean and the environment. Her love of the environment drew her to take a botany class where her interest in science and plants blossomed. After a brief college search Brie found Alaska Pacific University, and four years later she had a BS in Environmental Science and a job at ABG. Brie is currently ABG’s Office Manager and Membership Coordinator and as with any non-​profit, she wears many other «hats». Between her educational background and combined eight years of retail and customer service experience she has proven, to be a good fit with ABG. Brie was born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts and is a proud fan of the Red Sox and the Patriots. She has three fur babies, Zeus, Athena & Sandi and she is a self-​proclaimed «crazy cat lady».

A beautiful place to go on a lazy Sunday afternoon and a great place to see fall season. The entrance has a paved trail that makes a completely circle and dirt trails in between. The garden feature different types of plants, flowers, vegetables, and herbs.
The kids really enjoyed seeing the giant sunflowers, cabbage truck, herb garden, and pergolas. They charge $ 10/​adults and $ 8/​Kids, seniors, military. Just don’t expect to be amazed or see anything new. Overall, this place is great for amateur photographers and it took about 45 – 60 minutes to see every section of the garden.

What great gardens! I visited the Alaska Botanical Gardens back on Monday, June 1st and the flowers weren’t quite in bloom yet. I remember enjoying the herb garden immensely and taking great photos of a variety of flowers. Even though there was a bear sighting (plus her two cubs) the previous day, we did not encounter them during our visit. We were greeted by a great employee who described the entire gardens prior to us even entering… I guess she wanted us to make sure we knew the lay of the land before we entered. Overall, a great spot to take pictures, see flowers, and escape into a tranquil garden. It looked like there were great programs for kids, too.

Really well kept and a gorgeous variety of plants. Especially loved all the different types of peonies. Loved how they mixed ornamental plants with edible types. Would like to try this at home. Definitely worth a visit!

I have been to this place twice. Once about 5 years ago or so and now again just recently. It is really a great place. It seems like the way the garden is just cut out of the woods would not work. But here it does. I love the place. They have laid wood chips everywhere and between all the great plant specimens every variety of fungi were popping up. My wife and I both like and work with plants and so visit many gardens and parks where ever we go. This isn’t one of those french formal not a flower petal out of place gardens… so if that is your cup of tea I suspect this is not the place for you. I’m assuming you probably wouldn’t be in alaska if you were that much of a wall flower anyway! But if you like plants, plantings, nature
and they have plants sales too… then you will love to add this location to places you’ve been. Great job people. I love your logo too. :-D

This is one of my favorite places to buy plants, and to walk around on a nice day.
The staff and volunteers really know plants: they know what grows in Alaska, and they have some of the hardiest and most interesting varieties of those plants. All the starts I’ve gotten here have been very healthy and good growers. They also have excellent organic compost and soil at a decent price, and have a nice-​looking gift shop I haven’t been in.
Do yourself a favor and DON’T buy plants or soil at big box stores! Fred Meyer/Lowe’s/Home Depot don’t grow and sell plants for *Alaskan* gardens! They may be cheaper up front, but you will spend much more time and money in the long run on inferior plants and materials. Growers like the AK Botanical Garden are tried and true.
I recommend the short walking tours they have in summer, led by Master Gardeners. FYI, there are frequently bears in this area so it’s better to be with a guide.
