Enjoyable place to shop! Pretty easy to find workers to help… saw 5 workers wandering about while I was shopping.

I’ll be honest, I don’t cook at all these days.
A cursory glance of my Unilocal history will tell you this.
However, sometimes I need to run into a grocery store to get snacks/​food for a weekend of being «off the grid» (OTG).
As far as Anchorage grocery stores, you could do a helluva lot worse (*cough*GambleCarrs*cough*)
They have a large hippie/​granola/​organic-​y section, if you’re into that.
They also have nice restrooms.
I used to have a rewards card for here, but I lost it… and all my phone numbers don’t seem to work. Might be missing out on sweet deals. Guess I need to get another one.

Fred Meyer is a fantastic grocery store (and more). There were lots of fruits and veggies to choose from. The deli counter was stocked full of yummy goods. I snapped up premade sushi and enjoyed it. We bought sliced deli meats and cheese and they were good. There were fresh breads available. We also bought Alaska themed items, such as cute socks with moose and wildlife on them with ALASKA stitched across the top.
Items were organized well and everything I saw was priced. The store was clean. Prices were a bit high, but welcome to Alaska. We used self check out to save time. Overall, shopping there was a pleasant experience.

This was my first time at Freddie’s. I was helping my daughter set up her apartment. We enjoyed the fresh produce and large variety of products. What we were so excited about was the sale in housewares ! Fifty percent off of Pyrex and forty percent off of baking pans. I would recommend a look around this store.

Usually just stop here to get gas and light shopping. They just rebuild a lot of this location and redid some of the aisles and gave it a whole new café area. Nice place to stop for a quick bite while shopping or caffeine fix

Went by here for a total of six grocery items. Managed to only get 2. Four of six items were sold out. What? Why is everything sold out? Did you miss a delivery?

If you are in need of groceries in Anchorage, Fred Meyer is by far the best place to go. They have a MUCH better produce selection, and, frankly, everything else, than the other options. It’s large, it’s nice, it’s not overly crowded. The checkout lines aren’t too long and move quickly. There’s a Starbucks. There’s a liquor section.

DELI
This is specific for the deli, and the staff there.
I don’t know what time the deli closes — apparently it’s a while before the store does — however, the COLD FOOD deli is staffed until the store closes.
I went in (about 9) to get food for a trip the next day — several (three) staff were working on stocking up packaged meats, doing deli stuff. I asked to get some of the cold salad they have on display, and after a conversation in another language, they told me «no, closed». This food is on display, it’s cold all the time, the serving spoons are right there in the bowl, and it’s put into plastic packaging. THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO SERVE COLD DELI FOOD UNTIL CLOSING. It wasn’t going to «dirty» anything up, and it would have only taken a moment.
The customer service here was SERIOUSLY lacking. Very put off.
UPDATE:
Moira was very helpful — the hours of the «cold» deli are clearly posted (until 9), and Moira asked me if I would like anything at 8:55, meaning she had to dirty a spoon and wash it. Very helpful, I appreciated it and will return.

Am I the last one to realize that there is an eating area after the remodel? I bought some sushi, and I was headed to the little dining area by Starbucks. Nothing. Then, I noticed some stairs. I headed up, and was treated to a very nice eating area. It is much more spacious than the old one.
I was pondering what one would do if one had a shopping cart full of stuff. One would not want to leave it downstairs. Then I noticed the elevator. Well played, Fred!

The remodel of the Northern Lights store in Anchorage AK looks nice, but FM has done nothing to curtail the aggressive panhandling that happens in the parking lot. Occasionally they are even waiting by our car as my wife tries to unload groceries and secure our kids. Perhaps the finishing touch here would be to help keep your customers from getting shaken down after leaving your store.

Love my neighborhood store, excellent sales, great rewards program and wonderful selection of plants during the summer… so much more I can say but to close it out, it’s absolutely the best one stop shop

This is «my» Freddies. We have a love-​hate relationship. Getting TO this Freddie’s and navigating their goofy-​ass parking lot is a blessed NIGHTMARE. They’re working with limited real-​estate and crazy Anchorage traffic patterns, but it’s still a drag. Anchorage zoning board really needs to get their shit together because so many stores are forced to have bass-​ackwards traffic patterns.
Anywhoosal… I like the layout of this store. It’s smallish compared to most Freddie’s and it doesn’t have those dumbass split aisles like most other FM, which makes it super-​easy to look down the aisle and locate what you’re looking for. Major points for that. (I hear they’re gonna remodel soon and if they split the aisles here, so help me I’m gonna boycott FM!)
Produce here is always well-​stocked and fresh. The meat department can be hit or miss and isn’t always stocked as well as it could be. I’ve gotten some good deals in their meat department. In general, because this store is smallish sale items disappear quickly and aren’t replenished for days. For example, when O.M. hot dogs are on sale, they put 10 on the shelf. When they’re gone, they’re gone. Anchorage has 300,000 residents… so do the math. That doesn’t quite add up. The other day, the first day of their corned beef sale, they had exactly 2 on the shelf. That’ kinda stuff aggravates me. I also hate their over-​priced deli meats. That seems to be a real problem in Alaska. I sure miss the delis on the East Coast.
The in-​store liquor store has a great cold room with lots of exotic beers. Major plus there. Not the cheapest, but one of the cheapest liquor selections in town. Generally better than Brown Jug and always cheaper than Oaken Keg.
Customer service is generally good. I appreciate all the check yourself out lanes. I love that I can do one stop shopping here too. Flowers, candy, toys, groceries, furniture, pharmacy, liquor, clothing, shoes, linens, housewares, gasoline, and even canning, smoking, camping and fishing equipment. All in all, Freddies is great. They even have a cute touristy Alaska section. :-) Freddies is WAY cooler than Walmart for your one-​stop shopping. And prices are lower than Carrs by a lot. What’s to not love about that?

I’m from NY (home of Wegmans), so I can’t give Fred 5 stars. I’ll give them 4 though, because this is the best grocer in Anchorage, by far. The produce section is leagues above Carrs and the Commissary (for the military crowd). The same is true for the meat department and the overall selection of food in general. It is also nice that you can pick up beer/​wine from within the store (unlike Oaken Keg w/​Carrs). And of course, it’s really nice to have all of the other clothing and home departments that compare to Target and Wal-​Mart within arm’s reach in-​store as well. I am picky when it comes to gocery stores, and I would recommend making Fred Meyer your grocery store for fresh foods in particular (i.e. meat, fish, fruit, and veg) if you’re new to the area.
One drawback, I agree, is that the ones on Northern Lights AND Muldoon both have poorly designed, crazy parking lots.

Goddddd, I loathe coming to this store anytime between 7:00am and 9:00pm. It’s a cluster&$#* of a parking lot, horribly designed and awkward to drive through, with all of the exits going to different one-​way roads going in all different directions. As soon as people drive into this parking lot, it’s as if all ability to maneuver a car farts out of their heads.
The foyer either has a sparse collection of the unwanted, squeaky-​wheeled carts, or a mass steel jungle gym that you need to dance around to avoid getting creamed by some unattentive soccer mom whose navigating one of those stupid child car-​carts while balancing her iPhone in one hand and her Starbucks in the other. The cart-​catcher employees always looked so peeved, and I don’t blame them — the patrons of this store, while also forgetting their driving capabilities, seem to be completely blind to the cart-​return not two spaces away from their car that’s illegally parked in the handicapped spots.
The aisles here are more cramped than other Freddy’s. And they are so rarely ever completely stocked. It’s SO annoying to have to make multiple trips to multiple stores, because this Freddy’s ran out of an herb or vegetable or fruit or whatever the hell else, and there are always vastly empty shelves and sections of the produce area. After a long day of work, fighting through the traffic, and discovering that bulk peanuts, zucchinis, and basil have all departed the store in a mass exodus is soooo annoying. And this happens so much (not with peanuts, zucchini, and basil, but any other random selection of items), this regularl encounter of poorly-​stocked shelves, that I already plan to make extra time to go to Sagaya afterward. Oh, and speaking of produce, avoid most of the stuff when it goes on sale. Moldy oranges, fuzzy strawberries and blueberries, and lettuce so limp Viagra couldn’t save it, are what constitutes as «sales» at this store.
Most of the people manning the self-​checkout are I M P O S S I B L E to flag down, which is a tremendous annoyance when you’re halted from finishing your self-​checkout because a lone grape rolled itself off of the scanner area, and the entire system heaves into a conniption fit due to the weight imbalance. And when do you manage to get someone, 75% of the time, they are too busy yammering on to their coworkers to pay you any attention, or they are just outright cranky. Many other employees seem quite annoyed when you have to bother them for a question or product.
I can’t remember the last time I didn’t see a huge line snaking away from the pharmacy counter. While I have had some very nice service there, they always seem tremendously understaffed and frazzled. I love being sandwiched between a dude with a phlegmy, contagious coughing fit and an old man that has apparently sprung a gas leak (of the worst kind) for 20 minutes just to pick up a script.
It’s a convenient all-​in-​one store, but sometimes I’ll find myself driving to the Abbott location just to avoid this Northern Lights store.

This is a nice chain store, the parking lot is so-​so. If your heading there between 730am to 9am and 4pm and 6pm be advised of the horrible traffic.
This store is in a major crossroad in Anchorage and the times stated above makes leaving this establishment a nightmare at times, no I’m not patient.

You made my week, my month, my YEAR when the culinary genuis in me finally decided to start an indoor herbal garden. Finding nothing at Alaska Mill & Feed, I tried you and found what I needed. You had the herbs, miracle gro potting soil for herbs, and earth-​friendly biodegradable pots. Now I have sage, cilantro, thyme, Italian parseley, rosemary, lemon thyme, and oregano in my wonderful garden. Thank you!

Like people said, it’s a one stop shop like a Walmart or Target, but also has a lot of groceries. The prices were pretty good. It was really good for stocking up on backpacking foods in the bulk foods section. The produce was underwhelming, but it seemed that way in a number of Alaskan stores. (I don’t blame them, Alaska is far!)
They have a huge selection of stuff, including a fair amount of camping gear.

It really is one stop shopping. Food, alcohol, furniture, clothing, pharmaceuticals, hair care, electronics, and more.
I really like the food section. There is always great deals on produce, organic or not, and the natural food section is great from the bulk spices, to cleaning products, to snackies. The prices here are best in town. The only bad thing I can say about the midtown store than the others is that sometimes some of the produce is not is stock or is kind of wilty, but it is not an often enough problem for me to travel across midtown, passing two Carrs, to defer to the competitors.
The staff are always really helpful and nice, and the store is clean. If you’re a member the company sends you money vouchers for the store twice a year based on your points, and every month based on your points you can get cheaper gas. If you need a new dog tag for yourself or your animal there is a machine for that by the restrooms.
