Worked all day. Brought my dog here who was having shallow fast breathing and panting, extremely lethargic, barely walking or going up stairs and recently had worms in her stool. I only came here as no VET was available to see my dog after 5pm. 4 hours later the only care my dog has received a 5 minute conversation with the doctor. Actually… no. She wasn’t very animal friendly, made no interaction with my dog. I don’t think she even looked at my dog once the entire five minutes. She looked at me though. Waited 2 hours to get the results from a completed fecal test… from 2 hours prior. Very disappointed. Too upset to say anything I might burst into tears from frustration and exhaustion. End result was a normal fecal test. Waste of 4 hours. Glad my dog is seemingly healthy. Not glad I came here.

Notified of a 30 minute wait which evolved into 90 minutes. Obviously unforeseen circumstances in healthcare can cause delays, but this information should be relayed appropriately. Walked out with a $ 360 bill only to find out 3 days later, by our vet, that they missed 4 infected teeth.

We negotiated rates for unnecessary treatment based on our animals condition, while informing family via Facebook post that the facility was mentioned in on November 23^rd. On November 30^th, we received a letter from Dr. Lindsay Ruland that Emergency Care would no longer ever be provided by for our animals due to our offensive discussion of what we would allow or not allow to be done and Negotiating out procedures and tests that were to be run based as a matter of practice verses the animals condition dictating the necessity is not an offensive, you do the same for human children, you don’t allow them to be psychologically tortured for idle curiosity. All because we didn’t allow more treatment! What was proposed AUTOMATICALLY to be done, not if he spiked a fever or if he didn’t hold down fluids, it was AUTOMATIC for staying overnight. We declined those options due to the primary problem being dehydration. Which then the cost went down to $ 900-​$ 1100, from the $ 1500, I said I don’t like leaving him here, but let me go to bank to make transfer leaving my Husband behind so you don’t think we are abandoning him. The Vet Tech then said, let me go talk to the doctor, came back with okay you can take him home for $ 300. THAT WAS OFFENSIVE? He couldn’t mentally take that facility! Too loud, to making animals making noise, too many strangers, he was hiding under my Husband legs! Furthermore refusing to provide future Emergency Service to an animal in need proves the very need to negotiate what you allow to be done to your animal at this facility. All businesses need to make a profit, however not at the expense of animals well being. Sadly a lot of rescues I donate to, use this facility, so I will have to specify on my donation that it is NOT for bills being paid to this facility or it has to be used for services other than Medical care.

They saved my dog’s life yesterday. He was out for a walk, and his airway collapsed. He was unable to pant too cool himself and suffered from heatstroke. The moment I carried him in they immediately got to work to start an IV, incubated him, and started cooling him down. I had never been there before, and they immediately took care of him. I cannot thank them enough. They truly saved his life yesterday.

I do not recommend taking your pet here. The staff is inexperienced. They don’t know what they’re doing but will sure act like they do. Nice enough people but amatures. They misdiagnosed my dog but wouldn’t own up to it. Prices are slightly better than other emergency vet hospitals but I would rather pay more to have adequate, experienced technicians working on my dog.

I took my cat to a different emergency vet hospital and was VERY upset with how my cat and I were cared for. Then I was recommended to Dr. Ruland and her staff here at Emergency Veterinary Hospital and was unbelievably pleased. Not only did Dr. Ruland and her staff make me very comfortable but they let me see my cat and where he was staying overnight (as most veterinary places take the animal to the back and that’s it). They kept my animals comfort in mind and anytime I was worried about my cat they were there to update me. This veterinary hospital is not your ordinary place. I cannot thank Dr. Ruland and her staff enough!

I had to take my dog here for a «bite wound»… meaning, he was playing with my sister’s dog and bit himself, completely puncturing his lip on his canine and getting it impaled there. Everyone was so kind and professional here. I fully trusted the vet and her staff, which I think is saying a lot for only meeting them once. The price was reasonable for an emergency clinic visit. My dog didn’t need stitches or anything, just a course of antibiotics. I would definitely take my dogs or cat here again, but hopefully I never need to.

We brought in one of our cats for UTI today. The staffs were very kind, I could feel how much they love animals and care about how human companions feel at such situations. We felt the doctor was professional and reliable. The technician explained and demonstrated how we should give medicines to our cat in detail. Both of them answered to our questions very kindly. We are glad that we chose this hospital. Thank you.

I can’t say enough to recommend the Emergency Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Ruland. I brought my elderly cat Scout in late one Friday night and although I eventually had to have her put to sleep, I am very grateful that I chose this clinic.
Every member of staff that I had contact with was respectful and helpful. Their pride in their work and love for the animals entrusted to their care was obvious.
Throughout my visit, Dr. Ruland gave me all the information I needed to make my decision, printing out and carefully explaining Scout’s test results. I have seldom dealt with a doctor who was so skilled at conveying complex medical information while neither overwhelming me nor condescending to me; she helped me to understand all of the ramifications of the tests while treating both me and my cat with dignity and respect.
Although there were other customers in the clinic needing their attention, the staff never rushed me or pressured me to make a decision. I was allowed to come into the back area and sit with Scout while the tests were being run, and when the awful moment came when I had to let her go, it was done in a private, quiet room with her in my arms, and afterwards I was allowed to sit alone with her as long as I needed to.
On top of everything else, the fees were very reasonable.
If you’re where I was that horrible night, paging through reviews and wondering which place to take your ailing little companion, I urge you to choose these kind and knowledgeable people.

Two seconds. It took two seconds for my dog to chew off the ear of his stuffed elephant toy and ingest it. I closed my eyes for two seconds while doing a yoga stretch and when I looked up? It was gone. My dog just turned a year old so he’s still in that puppy phase but has never been particularly destructive aside from a few phone charger cables and my fella’s eye glasses (RIP raybans) so I wasn’t quite sure what to do. My first instinct was to take him to the ER but I didn’t know if I was overreacting or not (I’m an intense dog mama) so I looked it up online and most everyone said what I was thinking – it’s easier to make them throw up and get it out than wait for it to pass and end up with a blockage that needs surgery. So, at 1am on a Saturday night my fella and I grabbed the pup and went to Emergency Veterinary Hospital.
When we got there we were the only ones in the lobby so they took us back nearly right away. The nurse/​vet tech took a look at our little dude (took his temp, checked him over, etc) very gently and sweetly and said that the vet would be in as soon as she was done with another patient. We didn’t have to wait long (maybe 5 – 10 minutes) before she came in and asked us some questions. She did the standard check (felt his stomach, checked his heart, etc) and recommended, since he had just swallowed the ear not even a half hour before, that we induce vomiting and see what happens. She said that if it doesn’t come up the next step would be to do an x-​ray and see where it was but she was confident that it hadn’t moved beyond the stomach yet so we agreed. Before doing the procedure she let us know the cost involved so we wouldn’t be surprised. In that moment I didn’t care what the cost was, I just wanted him well, but luckily it was very reasonable.
They took him to the back and I could hear the poor little guy crying. He has a flair for the dramatic (cries when I brush him or trim his fur) so I knew he was okay but it still made me sad. It made me less sad, however, when I heard the awesome staff talking gently and reassuringly to him. I knew he was in good hands.
We waited for a while and finally heard a cough and one of the ladies yell «YES!!» so we knew he had expelled appropriately before they even came in. The vet showed us the contents and asked me if the foreign object looked right and luckily it was. They brought him back out to us, gave us some medicine to coat his stomach the next few days to soothe any irritation he might have suffered, and sent us along on our way. We were in and out in less than an hour and it cost roughly $ 150. Not bad considering a few weeks ago a visit to his regular vet for unrelated tummy trouble cost a little over $ 100. So $ 150 for an ER visit? A great price.
Awesome staff, fantastic care, a clean facility, great prices. It’s good to know there’s such a great place just up the street should we need it. Hopefully we don’t, but it’s good know it’s there.

I can’t believe I forgot to review this place!
We had to bring cat #1 in to EVH last winter when she decided that it was a good idea to eat some lilies. (Silly us for thinking they were out of reach). Knowing that this could be dangerous for the cat to eat we called the vet and they recommended that we bring her in, which we did. We were greeted by friendly staff right away and brought to a room where they took a history of what happened and some blood work. Based on that, she was kept overnight for fluids and observation. Before we left her, the vet met with us and let us check out the cage that she was staying in. It was nice, roomy and they made it very comfortable for her. I was impressed and although sad to leave my kitty behind, I knew she was in good hands. The next night we were able to bring her home as long as we kept her hydrated and brought her back once more for recheck on her kidney function. Everything turned out fine and lilies and lily related plants are now banned from our home :)
I was so impressed with my experience with EVH that when cat #2 ate half of a hibiscus plant and proceeded to have an incredible stomach ache (a.k.a — puke all over my mom’s house), they were the first place I called looking for advice. It was Christmas eve and I was so glad that they were available to tell me that my cat would be fine and to just watch her for dehydration. I had gone back home for winter break but would have driven the hour back to Ann Arbor if needed because EVH is who I trust for these things now.
I highly recommend EVH to anybody who needs help for their furry little friends. Great people who genuinely want your pets to be okay.

I wanted to pass on my incredible appreciation for this animal hospital. My husband and I came home last night to find that our 15lb dog had eaten ¼lb of dark chocolate. The chocolate had been wrapped as a Christmas gift under our tree (we weren’t aware that it was chocolate or wouldn’t have left it under the tree) and he ate the entire ¼lb log while we were gone. Reasons why we HIGHLY recommend this hospital…
1.The after-​hours voicemail at our usual vet (Affordable Vet Services) recommended this hospital for urgent after-​hours care. We love and trust our vet so we felt comfortable that they would know their stuff.
2. They did not attempt to perform anything unnecessary just to increase the bill. In fact, they first tried the simpler and more affordable option. When we brought him in they asked how long it had been since he had eaten the chocolate (we weren’t sure because we had been gone for 4 hours) and then told us that they would first try to get the chocolate out by inducing vomiting but that might not work if it had been closer to 4 hours since he consumed the chocolate. They explained that if they couldn’t get enough chocolate out they would recommend admitting him for overnight treatment with activated charcoal which would be more expensive but that they would try the cheaper option first.
3. My dog received such compassionate care. The vet who was there spent the entire time kissing my dog’s forehead while he was throwing up and telling him what a good boy he was. The vet techs were also incredible. I saw them interacting with a dog that had to spend the night (whose owner obviously was not there to watch how the dog was being treated) and they were still incredibly kind and compassionate.
4. They saved my dog! After inducing vomiting and one round of activated charcoal they sent my dog home with me along with specific things to look out for. ¼lb of dark chocolate is A LOT for a 15lb dog and I know without their treatment he would not have woken up this morning behaving as if nothing had happened.
I hope I never need urgent veterinary care again, but if I do I will only go here.

Our year-​old puppy started having some coughing fits, so we made him an appointment with our usual veterinarian (Affordable Vet). By the next evening, his condition had worsened so dramatically we feared for his safety. I called Affordable Vet, but they had no immediate appointments available and recommended that we take him to Emergency Veterinary Hospital.
The staff was incredibly professional and compassionate. Mikey’s condition was so bad that Dr. Ruland recommended that he stay overnight for an intensive regimen of breathing treatments and antibiotics. She was wonderful and so very knowledgeable.
An estimate for the cost of services was presented to us after his preliminary exam but before treatment. I really appreciated all of the open communication.
They took WONDERFUL care of Mikey, and he came home the very next morning. We received phone call updates during his stay, and were encouraged to call or stop in anytime to check on him.
I’m very grateful that we didn’t wait, and that we took him to Emergency Veterinary Hospital. They saved his life. No joke.

There aren’t enough stars for this facility. I am forever grateful for EVH’s treatment of my cat who had a collapsed lung. They saved her life. The care my cat received there was top of the line, yet they charge half of what other emergency vets in Ann Arbor charge. Dr. Ruland is fantastic and we are truly blessed to have such an amazing veterinarian here in the area. We did not have time to look for reviews before coming to this hospital but I am so, so thankful we came here instead of Blue Pearl.
The vet techs here are phenomenal, they are all extremely knowledgeable and so very kind. Over the 5 days my cat was there, I probably called 5 times a day and everyone was extremely patient with me, after she was discharged I probably called 10 times a day and they continued to give me instructions/​support for weeks. And at the end of every conversation they would always tell me to call back any time. These people truly care about our animals and are highly trained to take care of them in the worst case scenario. Love, love, love this facility!

I don’t think their business model is sustainable. Unlike other reviewers I went with my cat on a weekday morning. My regular vet couldn’t see us that day and his situation was acute, not life threatening. I hadn’t been able to get him to the vet because of my own health problems. This is a chronic problem for my cat and has been treated with the same procedure two other times. My regular vet suggested this vet if I wanted him seen right away and he was very uncomfortable and hadn’t eaten in 2 days so I decided he shouldn’t wait another day.
He was examined and given an x-​ray and I was told he need the procedure that I’ve had done on my cat twice before. The estimate was more than twice what Ann Arbor Animal Hospital would charge. I’ve actually just left AAAH because they are so expensive so this price was outrageous. In fact since the quote was $ 900 I would have had to have him put to sleep rather than do it if that was my only choice.
The reason that I say the business model is unsustainable is that I was the only person there with one vet and one tech. I have no idea how long it had been since their last customer but I felt like I was paying two people’s salary plus rent and electric. How many truly emergency pet situations are there at 10 on a Tuesday? They would do much better to have walk-​in urgent care (no check ups) 9 – 5 and charge a normal rate. My new vet happens to not do walk in but AAAH is 2 miles away and they do for less than half the price. There are other vets that do walk-​in in town too. The folks were nice but don’t go unless your pet is dying or it’s after hours and urgent. Also I have taken a pet to AAAH after hours and it wasn’t cheap but it was far more serious and more testing was done on a large dog and I never paid $ 900.

I just brought my cat home from a procedure at EVH.
On Monday night my cat was having some trouble (exhibiting signs of a blocked urethra). We rushed him in, they saw us immediately, and they really took it from there. Throughout, I felt that we were in knowledgeable, sympathetic, generous hands. Everyone was nice to us, everyone was understanding that we were nervous, and everyone was professional. Dr. Ruland is especially great.
Our cat stayed at EVH for about 40 hours. They were great about calling us twice a day to give us an update, and when I called once or twice to ask questions, they were really gracious about answering them (I’m sure they’re busy with other things, but they really took the time). We also visited once about half-​way through and no one seemed to mind that we were in their space cooing over our cat. During that visit, we were really impressed by the cage our cat was kept in. Maybe that’s a weird thing to say. But the cage was made cozy, which felt reassuring. He had everything he needed – food, water, a full litter box, blankets, a bed – and was clearly fine (granted, also drugged up!).
Just now, going over the discharge information, EVH was so patient with me. I had a list of questions, I carefully went over the discharge information, I asked for a medication-​giving demonstration, you name it… and they talked with me for a good hour. No rush, no big deal, they were there to help. They even helped me move the carrier to my car.
I can’t speak to price other than to say that, while the procedure seemed expensive ($ 1700 to unblock the urethra and everything that follows), I take it from a friend who is a vet in Massachusetts that this price is average and represents the intensive care our cat was receiving. I also appreciated that before any action was taken, they presented us with an itemized estimate, answering any questions we had.

I believe in being prepared. So when I saw an article in Ann Arbor dot com about this new 24-​hour emergency vet clinic, I paid attention. Little did I know that I’d be using their services the very next day!
I was leaving the house. I lowered the garage door as I backed the car out. I was horrified to see the back end of one of my cats trapped at the top of the door. She had been on the door (we knew she did that) but did not have a way to get down when the door started moving. I vow to build an escape route so that will never happen again!
My cat turned out to be OK. Just had to say that up front for all the animal lovers.
The vet tech who talked to me on the phone and greeted me once I got there seemed very experienced, and was able to help me calm down. After they took my cat in the back, I grabbed a brochure to distract myself. They have an x-​ray machine that is sensitive enough to see some of the soft tissues. That was reassuring.
The verdict: No broken bones. Whew! I really appreciated having someone check over my pet to be sure it wasn’t worse than it looked. I can sleep tonight knowing that we’ve done our due diligence. I expect she’ll be fine. She has a pain killer to take for a few days.
The place only opened on Fourth of July weekend of 2012, so it still looks a little bare. I think the walls need some tapestries and quilts to soften the echo. You can tell that they focused their attention on the vet care and not the décor.
They are on Jackson Road opposite Panera Bread, in the mall called «Jackson Business Center.» They’re in the back corner.
Their sign is too wordy to read from the road. (See my photos.) I really think it ought to say «ER Vet» but it has their full logo, which is hard to see when you’re driving near the normal speed along Jackson. Now add the freaking out effect of worrying about a sick or injured animal, and you might shoot right past the driveway.
So memorize the sign, and program their number into your cell phone, just in case you need it.
