History
Established in 1974.
The store first opened in 1974 on Liberty St. in a space in the Seva building. Within a few years the store had outgrown its tiny space and moved to larger quarters in the 2nd floor of 209 S. State St. By the early 80’s we opened another second floor location on State St. The two stores both operated for a couple of years before the decision was made in 1984 to consolidate into the 336 ½ location which is the current home of Wazoo.
Wazoo’s has been voted «Best Used Record Store» some18 times by readers of the Michigan Daily. Though historically thought of primarily as an outstanding place to shop for used recordings, Wazoo has developed, in the past 20 years, a large selection of new CDs, LPs and DVDs as well. With the resurgence of interest in vinyl, Wazoo has renewed its commitment to the format by making available many previously stashed away vintage items, and going to great lengths to acquire new releases on vinyl.
Meet the Business Owner
John K.
Business Owner
The current owner, John Kerr, is an Ann Arbor native who, aside
from 4 years at Kalamazoo College where he was Music Director at the campus radio station, has resided his entire life here. John joined the original owner Brian Gunderson in 1978 as clerk and later buyer and manager. He remains excited about the challenge of operating a small independent store in a highly competitive era where megastores are the rule of the day and feels that a knowledgeable staff of passionate music fanatics is behind the long run of success Wazoo has enjoyed. Few independent record stores nationwide have survived the downturn in the music business– the technological changes and the corporate consolidation– of the last few years. We are proud to still be able to bring a diverse selection of music to the community.
