History
Established in 1975.
In 1965, NOVA opened with 761 students in a single building in Bailey’s Crossroads; the college purchased 78 acres in Annandale in 1966, the first of six permanent campus sites. NOVA expanded in 1967 – 1969 with new campus sites in Sterling, Manassas, Woodbridge, and Alexandria.
NOVA opened the Extended Learning Institute, now the Workforce Development Division, in 1975 for individuals who wanted an education but could not accommodate a traditional program into their schedule. With the addition of the Medical Campus, educational centers in Arlington and Reston, and Manassas Innovation Park, NOVA offers more than 160 associate degree and certificate programs to more than 75,000 students from 150 countries.
