Thank you, Deana! I was starting to feel «blah» and needed an updated haircut after about a year and a half of growing it out. I searched on Unilocal looking for someone who per pictures/​reviews really knew how to do highlights on dark hair and who kept up with hair trends… and Unilocal pointed me to Deana. I callee on a Tuesday and was able to get an appointment that Saturday. I took some pictures of haircuts and ombré highlights to Deana to give her an idea of what I thought I wanted, but ultimately left it to her discretion to do what she thought was best to give me an updated style that fit my face, lifestyle, etc. She was spot on and I couldn’t be happier. I have been searching for THREE years to find a stylist in the DC area that I really liked and I finally have!

I am very particular about my hair, so finding a good sylist can be frustrating and time consuming. Safia gave me one of my best haircuts to date! I just moved into the area so I did a quick search for nearby salons and this one had great reviews, so I decided to give it a shot — I’m sure glad I did! Everyone was really friendly, Safia took the time to evaluate how my hair was cut previously, listened to what I was looking for, and then executed slowly to make sure I was happy along the way (unlike some that just chop and say «now we know better for next time»). Prices were also very reasonable. I would highly recommend Paul Michaels and I look forward to many more great haircuts in the future!

Terrible. I got the Living Social deal and was extremely disappointed. I wanted to chop off all my hair and get a short layered haircut but she ****badly***** layered the right side of my head and did not leave any layers on the other side of my head. Never coming back.

I’ve been coming here for years (about 8). Paul is great and all the stylists and staff are friendly and skilled. Deana has been my stylist for about two years now and I have had no issues whatsoever. She is great, listens to what you want, offers solid tips and information related to your hair type and desired style, and it always turns out fabulously. I always get compliments on my hair style :). The salon is always clean and organized. Would recommend to anyone.

Deana never disappoints.
My hair needed updating and i decided to do something very different than what I’m used to. I showed Deana what I wanted, got some guidance from her and away we went. I have very curly hair and wanted to go really short. Deana cut my hair in a way that complimented my face and I’m able to wear it both straight and curly.
The color is also amazing. Exactly what I wanted and was looking for.

Took my son to Paul Michaels hair salon to get a new cut for Easter. My wife and I are so happy with the the entire experience. Very polite and professional staff. My sons cut looks so good my wife and I made appointments for ourselves next week.

I had purchased the Living Social deal that included the deep conditioning, eyebrow waxing, and hair cut/​style. I don’t know that I would have done the conditioning treatment if I had not purchased the deal but I am glad I gave it try, it may be a good thing to consider especially after a season that had been hard on your hair.
I was able to get an appointment quickly, which was important to me. The women who helped me was Emily. She was nice and did a good job. I am not sure if I am a fan yet but it certainly was A-​OK.
I do plan to visit again and could become a fan…

Paul Michaels contacted me recently after an updated review (my original review was 2011). I was impressed by his attention and care — especially the way he finally addressed the issue. I wish him and his new/​now staff all goodness.

Finally! A stylist who listens to you, versus his own ego. After a decade of putting up with stylists who kept chopping my hair off telling me my face was «too long» for hair below my shoulders, a neighbor recommended Paul. I was straight up with him – I’ll stay if you do what I ask, rather than what you want. He’s never disappointed me, and I can’t say that about any other stylist. He also does a fantastic job with highlights; at my previous salons (many of them a good deal more expensive and swanky than Paul’s) they weren’t able to re-​highlight the dyed portion only. Thus, you end up with grown-​out highlights or blond hair all over. Paul has a pattern, and this has allowed him to touch up your highlights and keep them fresh. He’s also very personable and is able to carry on a conversation about most topics. The prices are great, and I don’t have to wait weeks for an appointment. My one small gripe – I wish we could put the tip on the credit card, as I am continually forgetting to bring cash with me.

Luv paul michael salon !! I moved here a few yrs ago and after a bad hair color job from a big name salon, paul fixed it and then managed to make it beautiful when i left hour after closing salon he stayed blow dryed it out to perfection. ive been with him since ! Call paul get an apot now you will love it !! And i love that everyone has a card so if i want a highlight i did a few months ago its written down i get my colors confused but paul always steers my hair in the right direction !

Went to see Paul Michael as my stylist years ago for a dye job based on the reviews I read here. He hardly paid attention to me and my hair turned out a brassy reddish color that I didn’t like. My hair is naturally dark and I wanted to go lighter. I finally found a competent salon in the area that listened to what I wanted. For the horrible experience he charged me over $ 100. I don’t understand all these good reviews.

This salon provides the quality services of higher end spots in a more casual, comfortable environment. If you are looking for someone who can help you visualize and work your way into a chic new look — and I have found that few stylists do this well — ask for Paul Michael. Expect the salon to be busy and for Paul Michael to provide your cut and finish your blow out but to delegate color once he has identified the right mix. This is a family run business and is warm and friendly and a little freewheeling. Kind of like most families!

Go see Deana! She’s great. I’m very picky about who does my hair, consequently I get my haircut maybe twice a year… But Deana is great! Will def be coming back!

I first tried this salon awhile back because of a promotion they were running on Groupon or Living Social. I was lucky enough to get Deana as my stylist. She was warm and attentive without being fake or too chatty. I liked my haircut, but since the salon is kind of far away and I thought it would be a lot more expensive without the deal, it took me a long time (and several unhappy haircut experiences) before I went back and asked for Deana again. Once again she did a great job, was friendly and asked a lot of questions to make sure she wasn’t cutting too much etc. It was worth the trip out there, the price was pretty reasonable and I will go back now every chance I get.

I recommend Paul Michael’s Hair Salon to all. The 1^st time I went I had the best service, I knew that I would as soon as I walked-​in the door. I could feel that I was in good hands, Great Customer Service… Even just fitting me in that day. I went in for color, cut and style, my hair took longer then we thought and Deana Michael my stylist stayed for an extra hour and a half after they closed to get the job done right and I was impressed with the work and I was a happy happy client and thankful, that she didn’t mind staying longer.
The 2^nd time I went I had the same service, GREAT SERIVCE. My friends and co-​workers loved the new look and I recommended them to go there. Which I know few have and love it… I actually plan on going soon. Its time for a new look and I’m happy to have a place I can trust to do the job right.

I work close to this salon and I wanted a quick cut before I went out to business dinner. My first experience was great! I got a haircut with Deana. She followed all my directions and I was very happy with my haircut. Been going back since.

I would give the first hairdresser 1 star for not following any instructions, especially when they were crucially important to the client, and overcharging for the service. I am not posting it above b/​c I do not want to hurt the business at first glance (some people just look at stars before reading further reviews), and because the owner acted understanding to our frustrations.
Here’s what went down:
My daughter went here to cut her medium length into a pixie cut last year, which the hairdresser did, so she had no complaints with that experience. (This is her first experience choosing a salon – based on convenience of location – and paying for it herself.) She realized that this style did not work for her as she was mistaken for a boy all the time at work, so she had to start wearing a lot of makeup, which she didn’t want to do. So she started the slow, long process of regrowing her hair out.
After several months, it had grown long enough to start adjusting, so she went the other day, after her hair had grown a little past the base of the neck, to simply have it reshaped, as the lower part lay close to her neck contour but the top part was full and round, so it was imbalanced. She was adamant about telling the hairdresser (whose name I will not disclose because I do not want to hurt her client base) that she wanted to reshape away the roundness, explaining that she not lose any length because of having often been mistaken for a boy from the previous length.
The instructions were somehow interpreted to mean for the hairdresser to cut off all the length, making the hair shape shorter and rounder — everything my daughter emphasized that she didn’t want. Her response to assure my 18-​year-​old daughter, who was in shock, was, «My mom does her hair like this all the time.» My daughter was too polite to say anything, but cried for over an hour afterwards. On top of it, the hairdresser charged a full $ 50 to basically lop off the length my daughter waited so long to grow.
I usually do not come in to complain, but I had to go in to speak to the manager the next day, asking for a refund. After chit-​chatting with a client, he finally came to speak to me and said that they didn’t do refunds but that he would fix it for her. I really didn’t want to do any business with them further, but there were clients present so I didn’t want to bring attention to the dispute. I asked my daughter to come in from the car. The owner did a few snips to thin it — what my daughter asked for and what the previous hairdresser should have been able to do. Except it was still super-​short. She now looked like a young boy rather than a middle-​aged woman. (Thank goodness she does not yet have a Unilocal account to see this.) We just accepted the fate and left afterwards.
I think it would have been fair to have given us a refund as the damage was done with the hair being cropped off against her wishes. 3 stars is generous b/​c the owner was nice, but I would not recommend this place.

I had a deal for haircut and color. Erica cut my hair and did a great job. She said highlights would be better than a single-​process color to lighten my hair so she gave me a deal for that. She asked Paul to look at my hair to confirm the color I should get. I think this was the best my hair has ever looked. I am naturally dark blonde, and I wanted it to be platinum. It looked natural and the color fit with my skin. It is more on the expensive side and REALLY far from home. Otherwise I would return.
I am editing this a year later because I have not found a place to dye my hair. They found the perfect color for me and if I go back to blonde, I would like to come back here.

I came here after deciding to get highlights for the first time in a very very very long time (about 10 years). Deana was awesome and made the experience very easy! She looked at my hair, determined what colors would look best with my skin tone, but still had me look through a book and decide for myself what color I wanted. She explained how the bleaching process works and how the highlights may look dark now, but it will get lighter, etc. She’s very knowledgeable, passionate about her work and easy to talk to. This salon is a great spot in Annandale!

After having my hair mangled by a stylist at another salon a friend of mine recommended I go to Erica at Paul Michael’s. I live in VA but go to a lot of charity events in DC. I have a highend stylist in DC who does blowouts for me but does not cut my hair.
Erica gave me a bob that was so perfect that my highend stylist in DC complimented her on it! He asked me who cut my hair and told me she had done a perfect job! It is rare when I highend stylist in DC compliments a stylist in the suburbs but he was right and I’ve gone back to her twice now and have had excellent results.
While the salon itself is in a little strip mall, it really delivers results. Go see Erica and you will be pleased with the results as well.
