Stella’s Soul Kitchen

I kept hearing about this Soul Food Kitchen so I decided II try them today. I did a take out container of oxtails dinner. The oxtails were superb, they were tasty and meaty
I want to give the food a 5 star, but I can’t because of the extremely high high sodium content in the oxtails. The Cabbage was so good I could eat a bowl of cabbage by itself!

Wow this is the best food in the entire Bay Area. I ordered Fried catfish, fried chicken, Hot links, greens, red beans and rice, and black eyed peas. Everything was amazing.

Dined in at this place with my mom and brother on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm. The service unfortunately, was slow. The guy at the counter was really nice and attentive, though he was stretched a little thin. They had several other employees in the place; I felt he could have used some more of their help. Hmm…
Now onto the food itself. Ordered the ribs combo which came with 2 sides and a cornbread muffin. Asked for their spicy bbq sauce on my ribs and it came with about 4 small ribs. The sauce was not at all in my opinion spicy. But hey, I like it hot so maybe it’s just me. The cornbread muffin was dry dude. Even after asking for butter. My sides were dressing and mac & cheese. Ummm! The dressing was OKAY; it had no slight sweetness to it as I’m used to, but it was served with a brown gravy that was also OKAY. Nothing to write home about. Now, the mac & cheese? What a freakin’ joke!!! Seriously??? It was a little overcooked and quite absent of CHEESE. I mean how is that even possible? If you’ve been to House of Soul or Lena’s Soul Food Café (Oakland) or most other soul food restaurants, you would have to agree with me that their’s is on point. Gooey with lots of cheese and perfectly cooked macaroni. They clearly missed the mark on this one. I’ll NEVER order that again. My mom had the links (mild). I enjoyed those. She said the red beans & rice were good, as well as the black eyed pees. My brother had the fried chicken; he has special needs so I’m unable to spill any comment from him, however I can tell you that it looked DAMN good & juicy and he ate it rather quickly! Lol
The location is decent, right off the freeway next to the 711. There is a decent amount of parking as well.
Pros: Decent décor, friendly counter guy who also has to do the phone and serve the tables and cashier and handle to go orders MOSTLY by himself yet he is soooo nice, good location, ribs were cooked well, the sweet tea was yummy.
Cons: The portions are relatively small for what you pay, service is SLOW, many missing light bulbs in the lamps so it was kinda dark in there, asked one of the other guys for some water and he said «why didn’t you ask him over there?» (Couldn’t tell if he was joking or what), and you have to go thru the kitchen to get to their restroom.
Will I come back? Meh, if I’m in the area. It wasn’t bad or anything, but that mac & cheese? Y’all trippin’!

I love this place. I just hate that soul food restaurants have to charge so much money. But the oxtails and the okra is on hit! so good I came back the next day for the same thing

First time and definitely not my last time coming here! The wait wasn’t that long and the food was amazing. The owners were so nice and the sweet tea was incredible, can’t wait to come back here again and try some of the desserts!

The food is always good and very tasteful, good flavor. Sides could be a little bigger because they are so good the smaller portions are just not enough. Very close to a down south home cooked me.

If the service was better i would give 5 stars. I have been here many times and they always seem aloof. I called in order and drove in 20 minutes later. It seems they only dropped my ticket as i walked in.
Don’t get me wrong. The food is great. Just wish they had better service.

This food is delicious. I had the fried chicken, which I dipped in bbq sauce, along with macaroni and cheese, and corn bread. The chicken was perfectly cooked and crispy, with a light batter that was still a little oily when it came out. I definitely prefer macaroni that sticks together like a casserole, which this was NOT, but it tasted good with as much seasoning as cheese. The cornbread was on the sweeter, softer side and moist moist moist. Sweet tea just like home in North Carolina. Mmmmmn good comfort food.

The fried chicken was amazing, as was the cornbread. The mac and cheese does need more cheese but it was absolutely amazing overall. Great soul food experience

I’ve been to this restaurant a few times and the food is consistently amazing. It takes about 20 – 30 minutes for the food come but it is well worth the wait. As the sign on the wall says «Soul Food Not Fast Food». If you’re looking for some good authentic soul food go to Stella’s Restaurant you will not be disappointed.

I wish I could tell you that the food was good. Hubby and I were glad to go to Stella’s. We finally got there, ordered our food… and we waited… and waited… We asked the young waiter to find out how long it would take before we’d get our food. All he could say was that he didn’t know. We watched others get their food that ordered long after we did and never got ours. It smelled good is all we could say. We came from out of town and I’m sorry we made the trip. I wish I could rate it a zero but I’ll take a thumbs down. Bummer… Thanks Stella!

The best down home soul food place on this side of the bay!!! I have had all of what they offer ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!

I like to get what I pay for? I recently purchased a catfish dinner with Mac and Cheese. However it appears that they forgot the cheese on the Macaroni??? I guess it was invisible. I’m cool on this place

Was in town for one day after traveling around all week and this place is off the charts amazing. Friendly folks, quick service, and best of all the flavors of all the food we ordered. Thanks for ending our trip on a high note! Go here and EAT!!!

This place is a perfect soul full stomach experience. The absolute best catfish I think I have ever had. Fried chicken was cooked to perfection. Bf had the players plate– amazing! I would definitely recommend getting the Mac and cheese as your side. The corn bread muffin was super tasty and not dry at all! This place is truly an Antioch gem hidden in the rough. Yum!

1^st time I had food from here it was on a co-​workers referral and they picked it up and brought back to the office. I had the oxtail, sweet potatoes and collard greens. Oxtail could have been cooked a little longer (the meat didn’t fall off the bone) and a tad salty (the salty I didn’t mind), all in all very flavorful so I wasn’t disappointed.
2^nd time I actually visited. Little place. actually missed it the first time around, but I’m a fan of «Hole In The Walls». Laid back feel, friendly and attentive staff. Felt like you were being taken care of by family. This time I ordered the smothered chicken (as suggested to me), sweet potatoes and collard greens. Everything was delish!
My disappointment between both visits were the same, a bit pricey for the portions received. I’ve visited other Soul Food places and either paid less and left satiated and content and/​or left with left-​overs… IMO for the prices paid, you’d think that you were at a high end restaurant as opposed to what was really down home cooking.

I will never eat here again. I ordered to go. Had a big appetite when I finally got home. An here’s what happened. Take a close look at the photo’s. Does that look like a meal that should cost roughly $ 30? I thought so. Plus food was average. I could have made this myself & saved $ 15 extra dollars. Very disappointing.

Everything was delicious. The ribs were so tender the meat fell off the bones. The yams were on point and the greens were seasoned just right. My fiancé and I really enjoyed our meal. This was our first time and We will be repeat customers.

Just passing through Antioch to get home and hit the web for some Soul Food and pick Stella’s Soul Kitchen after looking at the reviews on the other joints.
I order a 3 way combo of Catfish, Fried Chicken and Ox Tails (couldn’t help myself), with Collards and Rice & Beans and Cornbread as my sides.
The inside is nice and down to earth like a down to earth Black own Soul Food Joint should be.
Good Motown music sparse staff (don’t know what would happen in a rush of hungry folk) but overall ok.
I ordered at 5:15 Pm and got a sweet tea to hold me. The food arrived 5:45.
Catfish was to die for. The chicken wasn’t recently cook but seeing how few people were inside I understood.
Ox Tail were off the charts.
Rice and beans 7 out of 10. Cornbread not from scratch but doable.
Staff was ok and I’m satisfied.

I was craving soul food, like everyone else who made a review was.
The place is quaint and located in a sketch area but that’s OK because the food makes up for it.
I ordered the smothered chicken (2 good, big pieces and 1 small piece to supplement), complimentary corn bread (warm), red beans and rice, and mac and cheese.
Smother chicken was really great and tender. The gravy was seasoned well but maybe a tad too salty for my preference. I would still order it again.
Corn bread was warm and not dry like some ones you might get.
Red beans and rice were seasoned well and the beans were tender and flavorful!
Mac and cheese is typical, down home mac. The black pepper is a nice touch and you still get a good cheese flavor. There are so many good types of mac and cheese out there and I encourage this place to perhaps find a more elevated version/​recipe of it because even though it was good, it could have been way better.
Ambiance is OK. A couple of tables here and there but it’s enough for the flow of traffic. There was no wait and I didn’t wait long for the food.
There was a small mishap with switching my bill with someone else’s but it was a young man apparently apart of the family who still doesn’t understand how to professionally wait tables… it seems like they’re trying to teach him work ethic or something. That’s neither here nor there… they did fix the bill in the end.
I will return and it have definitely told people about this place. It’s hard to find soul food in or around Antioch!
