History

Established in 2008.

From humble beginnings at a small studio in Pasadena, Thea moved up to larger classes through Arcadia Recreation. While Thea was out on maternity leave in 2011, James became certified and took over the classes. Now we tag-​team teach and bring our daughter as our proud mascot!

James K.

Business Owner

James has a background in swing dance and track & field. He combines dance flavor with a high energy aerobic workout. In fast and slow dance numbers alike, all his cues are crisp and clear. Each week, he rotates in new choreographies for a fresh-​feeling class every time. You’re sure to be sweating and smiling when James is in the lead. Often, you will see him co-​teach and tag-​team with his wife Thea to add an extra bit of energy to the class.

I absolutely agree with all of the 5 star reviewers! I have taken James and Thea’s Zumba class for about 2 and half years and was really getting in to shape! So I decided I would give myself a session off. WRONG! I gained all the weight back! So I came back to James and Thea’s Zumba and after one session I have lost the weight I gained and lost inches! I will never not go to my Zumba classes with James and Thea!!! They are fun, I have met many new friends and I sweat like the proverbial pig! I LOVE IT!

ZUMBA!!!
I was unsure what I was getting myself into when I signed up to take Zumba. All I knew was what I had seen on some YouTube videos. What I got was an awesome way to get some exercise! James and Thea make the hour-​long Zumba class fly by. They are warm and welcoming to all students no matter their level of experience.

I’d like to preface this review by saying: HOLY HELL. I am out of shape. Like horribly out of shape. Like jog-​for-​a-​block-​and-​keel-​over-​and-​die out of shape. I don’t really have time to exercise (and by don’t have time, I mean I don’t make time), so I was a little hesitant at first when my sister invited me to take this zumba class with her.
Boy, was I pleasantly surprised!
It’s a bunch of fun. I look like an idiot and I’m pretty sure I do 85% of the dance moves wrong, but at least I’m having fun. Accuracy doesn’t matter when you’re taking this class anyway. You can be flailing around and you’re still somehow doing a good job because you’re sweating more than you have in a lifetime.
James and Thea are bombastic; they smile constantly and they inspire you to smile, too. They’re the sweetest, most energetic instructors a poor schmuck like me can hope for. They do not judge me for dancing like a dying camel. They simply smile and urge me to keep going.
All the women around me are having a fantastic time as well. They’re all smiling, bouncing around to the beat. Some of them are even doing the dance moves right. Some of them are poor, uncoordinated little dancers like me. But HEY! At least we’re all having fun and we’re all getting in shape!
I recommend this to class to anyone and everyone. It makes you really want to get healthy. It also makes me realize why I got a B+ in beginning dance in high school while everyone else got As, but at least this class is fun.
A+ to you, James and Thea! You guys are excellent instructors.

James and Thea definitely make Zumba a really fun and accessible workout! When my friend told me about Zumba, I was hesitant to try it as images of old ‘80s jazzercise tapes flashed in my head, but I decided to give it a try anyway.
I’m glad I did. Halfway through the first class, I was hooked. James and Thea don’t give you any time to be embarrassed or self-​conscious about being a first-​time Zumba-​er, their infectious smiles let you know that they are there to make sure you fulfill two goals when you’re there: that you get a good workout and have an awesome time doing it!
They vary up the routines so it’s slightly different each time and the playlist is pretty awesome – definitely love the cool-​down songs the best, though :) There’s definitely a variety of moves here that work your cardio, upper body, and lower body (OMG those squats…)
The classes are about 1 hour each and there’s probably a class schedule to fit yours. They are very flexible with scheduling, so it’s easy to make up classes if you miss one and you can still get your money’s worth (did I mention how affordable these classes are? Well, they are definitely affordable.) The class sizes also pretty manageable.
Overall, whether you are a first-​timer or rugged professional, these classes have something for everyone of all ages and all backgrounds.
My tips would be to definitely do this with a friend or someone you know so you can encourage each other and, if you are at the Dana Middle School location, to get there early because parking can be pretty rough. Otherwise, my last tip is to give these classes a try if you’ve ever wanted to know what Zumba was about. You can’t get any nicer instructors!

I’ve been attending James and Thea’s Zumba classes several nights a week for a year and a half now. I thoroughly enjoy these classes. James and Thea are a wonderful team who bring together a great and fun workout within a warm and friendly atmosphere. The routines are varied, but easy to learn and give a high energy, full body workout. The steps can be modified to fit any age or fitness level so classes are well attended by a diverse group of people. The facilities are excellent and I highly recommend Zumba with James and Thea. If you decide to come, you’ll definitely see me there shaking my bootie! Come and give it a try for a really, really good time!
