Just How You Like it

Once we got Gerry out here, he did excellent work. He’s very personable and easy to talk to.
We got several estimates and his price was the best.
This truly is a Family business. Gerry and his son perform the work and Sarah, his daughter, is the person on the phone and scheduler.
When you call them, Sarah will answer and say «Hello», as if you just called her personal cell phone. Don’t worry, just let her know your looking to schedule some work or need an estimate.
My only suggestion to them is to have a phone system in place so that Sarah can recognize the difference between a business call and a personal call and can answer with a professional greeting.

Jerry is a problem solver – an engineer with handyman status. Though, more expensive that the «guy down the road», Jerry brings the value of solving the issue correctly the first time and within a reasonable timeframe. I’ve utilized his services a half-​dozen times over the last few years, always happy with the results, I’d recommend him. Nice to deal with an honest man in today’s world.

Set an appointment for two days later at 4pm for a clogged sink (I couldn’t wash dishes for two days). At 4:15pm, when no one showed up and I did not receive any communication, I called the # and a woman (I’m assuming Sarah) picked up. I told her there was no one here and she snorted in the rudest way and said, «ONLY 15 minutes late?» EVERYONE’s time is money and I had an emergency– apparently that did not matter here. When a professional makes an appointment, they show up 15 minutes EARLY and/​or communicate if they are running late. She argued with me on the phone for 5 minutes, then hung up on me. The guy showed up an hour later and charged me $ 25 for draining my sink, and did not fix the problem. This company is a colossal waste of time and money.

I gladly recommend Gerry and JHYLI. I had just bought an old house in Glenview that needed a lot of work and hired Gerry after walking through my house with him to show what needed to be done. I liked that I could talk to him and just got that sense that he could be trusted to be honest and do the job right. Gerry, Sarah and John renovated my bathroom that was in worse shape than I expected. I thought it would just be a tile replacement. Boards beneath had rotted and just an accident to happen, water leaks and you could see that previous owner had skimmed on materials for proper insulation. Gerry fixed all those issues for me. My bathroom is now safe.
Beyond that, he was able to gain additional 2 inches of space on two walls by installing the bath properly and that also gave me the options to install cutouts/​wells (not sure of technical term) for placing my shampoo, body wash and other necessities. That was huge for a tall guy like myself. He also insulated the bathroom ceiling as that was lacking. Throughout the process, Gerry and Sarah were able to offer design choices we had not considered and when my wife and I add differing opinions on tiles and such, they were able to share from their experiences what has worked and not. The bathroom looks really great and my kids choose to shower there over the main bath.
I liked that Gerry was able to give me advice on other projects i was doing myself and in some cases he helped me; my kitchen sink plumbing thanks you. With them, you build a relationship and I looked forward to other projects with JHYLI. I will try to upload picture of the bathroom.

Called to set up an appointment. First reply on the other line was «who is this?!?», and must have quickly realized we are calling about their remodeling services. I should have taken it as a clue. Set an appointment, Sarah even took both me and hubby’s numbers and repeated the appointment details TWICE.
Day came and guess what — it was a NO SHOW! At least have the courtesy and decency to call if you can’t do the job or the day doesn’t work. On the plus side, I know what to expect if they were to do the job. I’m baffled with the 5 star reviews here!

Sarah was very sweet to speak with and actually returned calls when she said she would. Called on a Saturday to change a GFCI and switch out a garbage disposer that was dead. Due to a cancellation I lucked out, they came out on a Sunday!!! Gerry is the American version of Mike Holmes from Holmes on Homes. He knows his codes and can foresee potential issues along with repairing current issues better than can be imagined. He does not rush through to get the job done but instead does it correctly to begin with so that there will not be any future problems. He took the time to teach me as he was working and just truly cares about safety. On time, within budgeted quote he found errors in the prior work for the two issues and was able to come up with viable, safety conscious solutions for both. I am in total awe!!!

Sarah and Gerry were great! Had a smoke alarm on a vaulted ceiling that was beeping due to low battery, it was driving me crazy! Gerry came after hours to change out the battery. Very friendly service and well equiped. I would definitely use their service again!

Gerry and Sarah are the best! We’ve had them gut and remodel our entire Kitchen and Dining Room for starters. They did a fantastic job! We’ve also had them paint several rooms and help with other projects around the house. Always great service and it’s always Just How We Like it!

Wow! I am super impressed with this company. Gerry and his daughter Sarah have an awesome turn around time! They are ethical and dependable… wake me up I must be dreaming! Second thought, don’t ya dare, I want to finish my dream! We hired Gerry for a number of home repairs big and small and so far he and Sarah are passing with flying colors! Come back to read my final review. I am confident my dream will end with a house that doesn’t look like its in need of desperate repairs. I got a good feeling about this one, but see for yourself… call them TODAY!

Gerry does excellent work. I used him for a home repair and he was right on time, had a fair price and was easy to work with. Gerry not only did the repair, he fixed the underlying problem so it would never happen again, and it hasn’t.

Used these folks to install a floor in a laundry room, a simple peel and stick application. The quote was a little high, but I figured that the job would be more professional. The work was professional, however, although there were no surprises the invoice came in more than 30% higher than the quote. They charged extra for a tar paper underlayment (81sq ft) and the nails to reinstall the trim! Both of which should have been covered in the original quote because of being obvious.
The original quote also included cleaning a dryer vent. They were not able to snake through the vent, so they removed the cover on the outside of the house, I supplied them with a new cover and they installed it, I would have expected an additional charge of $ 20 for the unexpected work. While working on the vent cover they encountered a bee nest, so the worker held a board that was on the ground while I sprayed the bees, I was charged for my work and have not received any money for the labor, possibly not on the payroll yet.
The installation required the laundry tub be reinstalled and that new shut off valves be put in. This was an extra task that required 2 nuts to be screwed to valves that I supplied.
The worker had to lift the threshold of the next room a little so that the transition from one room to the next wood not be too much. this was part of the extra charge. I think this is part of the original quote.
They also charged me extra for installing the tar paper underlayment even though it was talked about at the time of the quote, and was part of the quote.
So, I had to help him with removing the washer, dryer and sink, I removed the closet doors, I helped him remove the old floor, I ran to the store for supplies, I removed the old faucet for the sink, I sprayed the Bees and received an ataboy. THEY CHARGED ME FOR THAT!
If you use this company be very very specific about what will be done and what will be add-​ons, which can be hard from a layman’s point of view. Just ask the question about add-​ons.
They are very nice and the workmanship is good, however, their quoting process almost tends to be Bait and Switch.
