I was pleasantly surprised by my first experience at this location. I would not normally shop at this kind of store because(from the looks of the display cases) it’s a little bit flashier than my personal style. The good: the staff here is extremely attentive, almost to a fault but it’s better than the other end of that spectrum. They have a reasonably good selection of bow ties which is what I happened to stop in looking for. The bad: the hard sell. Maybe I look like a young and naïve guy, but I don’t need 3 dress shirts and I don’t need socks. I had to remind the associate at least three times that all I needed was a bow tie and that I had everything else. Maybe I was their first customer for the day and they were still pretty hyped up. Four out of five because of attentive staff and good selection but unnecessary hard sell.

The short version: they failed to deliver my husband’s wedding tuxedo, which he initially purchased from them as a made-to-measure suit in November 2012. Bachrach promised to have it ready by December — ample time before our April wedding in case adjustments needed to be made — but it wasn’t, and in the end when my husband went to pick it up in March for the wedding in April, it was cut to fit someone else. Bachrach’s then-manager, Lance, agreed to try again, and in compensation for the fact that it wasn’t ready for the wedding, offered half off the price of the tuxedo in compensation. But it didn’t fit on the second try, either, and the second try was too late for the wedding. Bachrach then promised to try again for a third time, but did not keep in touch, and when my husband finally went in in December 2013(after returning from being out of the country) to see what had been done, he discovered that Lance had left the company and no further work had been done on the tuxedo. He asked for a refund and complained to their corporate headquarters. In compensation, they offered a $ 75 gift card. When there had actually been a chance of getting the suit finished, Lance had been willing to take half off the price to make the matter right; now that there was no hope for it, after a year and a failure to make it in time for the wedding, my husband was being offered a $ 75 gift card.(They were willing to offer him half off of a suit off the rack, which, given how often suits go on sale there, might have been worth $ 100 – 150, but still much less than the half-off he had been promised when the suit was still on order.) It is completely unacceptable for a store to promise a customer that they will have a tuxedo ready in less than two months, but then take over a year and still not be able to deliver the clothing. It is especially unacceptable when the customer makes it clear that this is for his wedding. My husband told Bachrach they had permanently lost a customer. I would urge others who have any important occasions in mind to steer clear of this store.

On Wednesdays we may wear pink, but on rainy Saturdays we always head to the mall. Unlike many men, my husband adores shopping. He doesn’t mind me oogling seductively at shoes, or spending hours caressing purses. In fact, he has fairly decent taste and can usually pick out a dress that will flatter my fatty frame faster than a sales-rep working on commission. It really is a wonder why I even bother with a personal shopper. However, he doesn’t often buy for himself. It’s not that he doesn’t love clothes(he does), but he has issues with mens clothing. They are either dark and conservative(which doesn’t excite him), or they are flamboyant and trendy(which isn’t his style). So imagine our surprise when we wandered into Bachrach and within minutes the sales manager has him trying on the loveliest light blue sports coat(that matched his eyes perfectly, but had a nice dullness to the color so that it would be office appropriate). At first, I wasn’t quite sure what surprised me more: the gorgeous, yet subdued, color of the jacket, or that the sales manager could tell what would strike my husband’s fancy with a few words and a glance. But as the lovely blue coat was followed by a sublime pumpkin jacket, and then a pale grey jacket, I decided that the sales manager was a genius. Not only was he able to discern my husband’s taste, but as he pulled out the various jackets, he would also pair them with colored shirts and ties and pocket squares… illustrating how versitile the peices were and how a simple swap of the tie could make the joyous pumpkin jacket into something somber and appropriate for a Friday afternoon business meeting. It was borderline genius. But besides the styling, he also carefully steered my husband away from jackets that wouldn’t flatter his frame; which is another issue as he has recently lost a lot of weight, so he is still adapting to his new, slimmer shape. Just excellent service by an excellent sales person who clearly knew his craft and his wares. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my husband enjoy shopping for clothes(for himself) so much, and being so excited to get his jackets(the sleeves had to be shortened just a hair). Just superb.
