Over 425,000 registered Catholics belong to the 68 parishes of the Arlington Diocese, which has opened six new parishes, five new schools, and established three new missions since 1999 when Bishop Paul S. Loverde became the bishop for the diocese. Further information can be found at www.arlingtondiocese.org.
History
Established in 1974.
Catholics first came to Virginia in 1570, but established a more permanent settlement in 1647. In 1820, Virginia was designated as a Diocese, but in 1974, the Diocese of Arlington was founded as a separate from the Diocese of Richmond. Bishop Loverde, our third bishop of the diocese, became the bishop here in 1999. Now, over 425,000 Catholics worship as part of our family in faith in 68 parishes.
