The Dental Office at River House

I continue going to this Dental Office even now that I live outside of Arlington. The technician, Ebony, does such a thorough but quick and painless job at cleaning my teeth. They are SO good here. I had been a little less strict with my flossing and she noticed!
I continue to feel that they are great at not over-​recommending. They have brought up some suggestions, in case I was interested, but never pressure me into fillings or other procedures. Its hard to believe I’ve been going here for 3 years now, but that should tell you how good they are.
Make your appointments early though, because they do fill up fast.

After having a terrible experience at another local dentist, I took my x-​rays to Dr. Cote for a second opinion. While the other dentist had recommended a very aggressive, expensive approach, Dr. Cote said I didn’t need fillings at this point and instead discussed ways to proactively re-​mineralize my teeth. He also took a thorough dental history, which the other dentist had not bothered to do.
It’s true that the office is small, and it isn’t beautiful. But having a dentist who will take a conservative and honest approach to my teeth, and take the time to explain information to me, is much more important to me than feeling like I’m going to a spa.

After my experiences here, I’m confused by the raving reviews.
On my first visit, Dr. Cote himself was kind and seemed competent. I enjoyed my time with him and felt like I was in good hands. That would change by the second visit.
The remainder of Dr. Cote’s staff was inefficient and discourteous. The office suffers from pervasive dust and mold which would have bothered me in any space, but especially a clinical one.
Finally, while Dr. Cote was great during my first visit, upon my return (to pick up a retainer I’d paid for previously), he was more brusque. It seemed as though, now that he’d pocketed my money, I was of little interest. As he checked the fit of the retainer, I realized there was a bump at the back left which did not match the shape of my teeth. It appeared to be a mistake in the form of the retainer, and it prevented me from closing my mouth evenly while wearing the retainer. I asked him about this, and he answered simply, «And what do you want me to do about it?»
I was put off by this lack of professionalism. I had paid $ 300 for this retainer, and now when I asked about the results, I was offered no explanation or apology, much less an offer to make things right.
Overall, I am put off by the physical state of the office, as well as the lack of professionalism. I don’t see myself returning, or referring the place to friends.

Our dentist retired so we need a new family dentist. Based on a recommendation we had an initial visit with Dr. Cote. He seemed competent, low keyed and willing to treat patients with considerable dental anxiety. So despite the drawbacks of an unappealing, windowless office and a parking set up requiring returning to you car with a parking permit we decided to become patients.
Later I called for a cleaning appointment, speaking to the office manager. I was told that there were no appointments until January 2014 (five months away). When my wife tried to explain that we had already had a preliminary visit with the doctor and that I was due for a cleaning she was less than helpful only offering a possible cancellation. When asked to tell Dr. Cote that we would appreciate it if he called us to discuss the matter she responded that she would tell him but that «…he wouldn’t call back.» When asked to tell him that she said «…he wouldn’t call back» she replied «Don’t talk down to me.» This was the tone of an extended conversation.
Later that day there was a message on our telephone from the office manager — not the dentist — saying that we could make an appointment for a dental visit and for a cleaning. Did she tell Dr. Cote’s everything? In any case, this was an unacceptable, unprofessional handling of two new patients. Our previous dentist personally returned calls the same days as does our family physician. Seemingly, this isn’t a health care practice that is patient oriented.

Dr. Cote is the best dentist I’ve ever had, and I’ve had more than my share of folks working on my teeth. He is extremely conservative, meaning that he tries to minimize the extent and cost of treatments within the bounds of his very sound scientific judgment. In other words, you won’t hear the cash register ring when you open your mouth. Don’t be put off by the ambiance of the office. You’re not there to soak up ambiance, so why pay for it? When my wife decided to move to Florida, we made a list of things we would miss about the DC area. Dr. Cote was #2 on the list. (The Nationals were #1). So, if Dr. Cote could pick up his game in deep center, he might have been #1.

Dr. Cote is the best.
I had a horrendous experience at a dentist just around the corner and came to Dr. Cote for a second opinion. He explained everything to me in detail, and made me feel at ease. I have been going to this practice for about 3 years. The office staff and the dental hygenists are so incredibly nice and professional. I always receive great cleanings. I will never go anywhere else!

I have been a patient of Dr. Cote’s since he close to when he started at the River House. He and his team are wonderful, fair and work hard to help each patient. I have heard real horror stories out there about other dentists. Thanks to Dr. Cote and his team, I have avoided this myself and shared his contact information to any friend looking for a great dentist, many of whom travel out of state to see him.
I will continue to recommend Dr. Cote to all of my friends moving forward. Keep up the good work!

Had my first dental cleaning a few months ago. Once you get over the fact that this place is located in the basement of an apartment building, everything is smooth sailing! I liked being able to fill out my patient information forms ahead of time (and not have to come in so early to push paperwork), and I thought my dental hygienist was very thorough (and, as is typical, told me I was not flossing enough). Dr. Cote came in only briefly at the end to check the work, but he seemed nice and professional. I’d definitely go back.

I just switched to Dr. Cote’s office after moving from DC to VA, and what a change! Friendly and professional staff. A thorough, quality cleaning and knowledgeable discussion about potential problem areas. Their technology and skill is superb. Plus, no pushy recommendations for extra services.

When I moved to Bethesda I went to a new dentist by my office near Farragut North. I was rushed in an out, misquoted fees, and mad e to feel like I was doing them a favor by being a patient. Seriously? I was back at Dr. Cote’s office for my next appointment. I’ve been going to their office for 8 years.
The office itself is older but they have new technology (LOVE seeing my X-​rays right away) and what really makes the office 5 stars are the staff.
Although I have very sensitive teeth that take extra time to work with, Dr. Cote never makes me feel like he is rushed. My teeth are his top priority so while he’s with me, he is totally focused. I feel valued as a patient and confident that my care is top notch.
Billing is easy – they submit to charges to my insurance company and then send me any balance that isn’t covered.
If you want to feel valued with great care, go see Dr. Cote and his staff!

The good Dr’s answer speaks in general terms that are not consistent with my facts. I was not offered any appointment within 24 hrs for my emergency. I was told, after the lady consulted with Dr, I could have an appointment in 2 weeks. This is hardly the inconviencing other patients that the dds mentions. Inventing excuses does not chane the fact I was turned away and left to fend for myself. Hardly the warmth that is alluded to. My only motive is to warn those on TDY or temp order from feeling assured.

I’ve recently seen Dr. Bridget Buck at River House for my dental work, and I absolutely love her! She is a wonderful dentist who really knows her field. She answered all my questions and makes you feel very comfortable (which can be difficult when you go any dentist) with what she is doing.
Although I’ll admit I was a little turned off at first by the smallness of the office, what they lack in aesthetics is made up for with their technology. Their xrays are 3d and their computer system can identify even the earliest stages of tooth decay. After your exam they go over each tooth and discuss what the data means for you. It was pretty awesome — I’d never been exposed to technology like that!
The ONLY thing I didn’t like was that their doors are open during the procedures, and sometimes other dental aides come into your room for supplies and whatnot and try to talk to the Dr. when you’re laying there getting your teeth drilled. Made me a little anxious, like please, can’t you see she’s busy here!!!
If it weren’t for that, I’d give the place 5 stars. The front desk staff is friendly and helpful. I’ve never had to wait more than 5 minutes probably. Never felt I was being overcharged. I’ve definitely recommended her to several of my friends who are looking for a good dentist!

I’ve been seeing Dr. Buck, and she is great! They are quick to see you and you don’t get stuck waiting around.
Technology is up to date and i actually get to see in advance any «potential» cavities, and Dr. Buck watches them closely gives great advice, etc. She’s not quick to dig into your teeth, which i find great.
convenient location and overall awesome experience.

Appointment & Wait:
They booked me in a few weeks out which was no big deal for me. The best thing about this was they sent me all of my paperwork ahead of time in the mail for me to do at my leisure. When I walked in for my appointment I just handed them the (already filled out) paperwork and sat down. Nobody else was in the waiting room and minutes later I was in the dentist chair! I applaud them for being the first Doctors office that took care of me in a timely manor and actually had me in the chair before my scheduled time!
Staff & Equipment:
The Receptionist and the Dental Hygienist I saw were both very nice and accommodating. The hygienist did a great job of cleaning with minimal pain involved. They have great state of the art technology available that can show weak spots in your teeth which allows you to be proactive and reverse the onset of a cavity.
Dr. Cotes:
After the cleaning Dr. Cotes came in and he was great as well. He gave me a full dental exam and even took time to explain the clicking I get in my jaw. He gave me multiple options for teeth whitening and even told me the prices so there would be no up front surprises depending on which method I went with. He took the time to answer any question a threw at him and without trying to rush me out for the next patient. Not really sure what Megan S. is talking about in her review but I did see her only other review on the site was negative as well… just sayin…
Overall:
I would give Dr. Cotes and his staff 10 stars if it was possible. Everyone knows going to the Dentist is a crappy process. I didn’t think it was this possible to have a decent time at the Dentist Office and be taken care of in a timely manor!!!

I ‘heart’ Dr. Cote and his staff! Everyone is ALWAYS super friendly whether in the office or on the phone. I’ve been going to Dr. Cote’s office for about 2 years now (on the recommendation of a friend) and I will never see another dentist again! The dental hygenist is awesome and SO gentle! It’s not her fault I don’t floss regularly… ;0)
They have all the latest technology, which makes up for the small office space.
I called to make an appointment recently and was told that the next available appointment was in January. When I mentioned that I think I may have a cavity, they put me on a cancellation waiting list. I had an appointment within a week! They are all SUPER GREAT! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Like Jerry Seinfeld, I am an anti-​dendite. Unlike him, I can admit it.
Dr. Cote is a wonderful dentist. He doesn’t overbook his calendar so there are no wait times. His staff is friendly and understand that most people don’t enjoy their time at the dentist (they suggested I listen to my iPod to block out the teeth cleaning noises which was very helpful and I kind of wish all dentists did this). Most importantly, he doesn’t seem to recommend unnecessary treatment to make extra money. Upon meeting he said «I will do everything I can to avoid ever drilling in your mouth.» That is why he is the first dentist I have been able make myself visit every six months — and my teeth thank him for that!
Bonus points because his office is so convenient to where I live.

It’s terribly difficult to find good doctors that you can build a relationship with, so I am fortunate to have found a reliable dentist, even though he’s totally hidden in the basement of a Pentagon Row apartment building (although enough ppl have figured it out I guess, it’s hard to get an appointment less than a month in advance). I’ve had nightmarish dental experiences at other offices in the city, even ones that were Washingtonian recommended. Dr. Cote has solid staff and uses plenty of modern equipment to make the checkups more efficient and monitor my dental health.
But let’s get serious here — I haven’t had any work done at Dr. Cote’s b/​c in the last several years I’ve gone to him, he tells me I have awesome teeth and no cavities. My teeth could be falling out of my head and if he still said I had no cavities and didn’t need any work done, I’d be a happy camper. Keep up the good work sir–

Excellent Dentist and staff, the best I’ve ever been to. They don’t over-​charge and seem to have enough patients that they don’t try to sell extra/​unnecessary work like other dentists in the area. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable, and take the time to explain things and answer questions.
The trick is getting there: the office is in the ground floor of River House Apartments, which is a huge building facing S. Joyce St. behind Pentagon Row. Go to the font left corner of the building (facing Joyce St.) and in to the 2 unmarked doors between the gym and other small business. Then down the hall more than half way, and his office door is on the right.

I love my dentist and his staff! They are extremely knowledgeable, courteous and professional. Additionally, they get you in and out on time. The absolute best part of all is Dr. Cote has no problem saying, «No, you don’t need that» even if your insurance will cover it.

I was referred to Dr. Cote by a friend at work, and I am SO thankful for that reference. The man is a consummate professional, has a friendly staff and has provided me with nothing short of stellar care for the last year. He explained things to me that my lifelong dentist never took the time to do before (like, how I can proactively strengthen the enamel on my teeth). He’s got hi-​tech gear that indicated areas where future problems might crop up and he’s kept an eye on them during every return visit. I have never felt empowered and reassured in a dentist’s office, but Dr. Cote is that good.
Dentistry can be a very personal enterprise, and since I had the same dentist since birth, finding a new dentist in DC was a harrowing experience. I actually walked out of three dentists offices (too sketchy for my tastes) before finding Dr. Cote. I live in the District, but I’m willing to suffer the indignity of Pentagon City just to have Dr. Cote take care of my teeth.
