I really would give it 3.5 if it was an option. Uptown is a pretty nice hair shop. The staff is helpful and if no help is needed doesn’t bother you. The prices are slightly higher than some of the stores in S. Arlington but I think its worth it for the better atmosphere. They have just about everything. One complaint is that when they get low or run out of things or products it seems like they don’t restock in a timely manner.

The staff is kind, but if you are purchasing hair, wigs or anything not like standard sprays and cheaper products be prepared to be watched and followed. I’ve only been a few times because I need more professional products that they don’t have or have limited stock on. I’ve found when I go to look at wigs or hair I’m followed around the entire time. I thought it was just to be assisted, but this last time I finally sat to try on wigs. Wigs don’t fit everyone and have to be tried on before purchase(BTW bring your own stocking cap because they will charge you 1.00 for one). I sat to try on wigs and, the girl just stood there and stared at me, literally over my shoulder and wouldn’t leave. Couldn’t answer questions about the hair type or colors, but sat there and watched over me the entire time like I was going to walk out tags and all. It became uncomfortable. I explained to her, my head is smaller and I typically have to modify my wigs to fit so it’s hard to find the right one(especially after they’ve been stretched on mannequin heads and other people trying them on). I explained to her what I was looking for thinking she could suggest something to move things along, but instead she said«you can only try on three»…What? I giggled because that’s almost impossible(the 4th might’ve been a winner). I told her kindly, «then I won’t find one and you should’ve said that when I walked in. I could’ve gone down to the larger stores with better assistance, free wigs caps and no restrictions until you find what you are looking for, I always end up purchasing from other places but it takes more than 3 wigs and ten minutes in a sea of 100»(this store is just closer to home and I was tired). I can’t recommend any place that follows African American women around, even though they sell strictly African American hair products — even if they are following you with a smile.
