The Lowdown Food Truck

I only had the fries, so I will update upon further inspection.
Little tiny pieces of overly salted curly fries. Nothing special. Menu has promise though.

Good sandwiches! We came across The Lowdown at Highland Brewing tonight. Had a meatloaf sandwich, the fluffer nutter and the popper. All three were really good. Fair prices, friendly and quick service. Try it, it’s good!

We encountered the Lowdown Food Truck parked outside of Highland Brewing Company. The food from this truck was the perfect complement to the beer we had. The truck is burnt orange in color and has an awesomely detailed cartoon drawing on the side. It’s like a wild, psychedelic Simpsons meets Family Guy meets Futurama meets Where’s Waldo? illustration. Props to the artist who created it.
The Lowdown Food Truck serves Southern sandwiches («sammies») with a twist. The day we ordered from the truck, the menu consisted of:
BBQ Sammie ($ 7) — smoked pork, pickled okra, slaw
Pesto Grilled Cheese ($ 5) — Colby-​Jack, provolone, tomatoes
Korean Sliders ($ 5) — spiced beef patties, kimchi, Korean red sauce
B.L.T.C. ($ 6) — bacon, lettuce, tomato, Colby-​Jack
P.B.B.N. ($ 5) — peanut butter, banana, Nutella
Meatloaf Sammie ($ 7) — grilled onions, cheddar, BBQ sauce
Tempeh Caesar Salad Wrap ($ 6) — local tempah, vegan
Seasoned Curry Fries ($ 3)
Chips ($ 0.50)
Cheerwine ($ 1)
I was really eyeing that meatloat sammie, but ended up going with a BBQ sammie and a pesto grilled cheese sammie. They were both delicious. It all started with the golden toasted and well-​buttered bread. That almost makes any sandwich instantly worthy.
The BBQ (pulled) pork was well-​marinated, so it was juicy, tender, and flavorful. The slaw was made from red cabbage. My favorite part was the pickled okra. Whole pieces of okra served as the base layer, underneath the pork and slaw. So, crispy slaw, savory pork, and smooth okra. Outstanding.
The grilled cheese came with two types of cheese. The orange-​and-​white, mild-​flavored Colby-​Jack (mixture of Colby and Monterrey Jack cheese) served as the base with two slices of deep red tomato on top, followed by a slice of sharp-​flavored provolone cheese, all surrounded by succulent pesto sauce. This isn’t your ordinary grilled cheese sandwich.
The curly fries are tasty as well. Think of fresh-​cut French fries, with the potato skin, but in curly form. These aren’t like Arby’s curly fries that are covered in batter.

Everyone seemed to enjoy what they ordered. The Korean sliders looked good. Two come per order.
The truck was quite hoppin’ the day we went to the brewery. They’ve staked out a good spot and were the only food truck on the premises. Service was a little slow because of the demand, but everything was made fresh and tasted superb. To nitpick, the food was a tad on the greasy/​oily/​buttery/​heavy side.
The cashier was cool. My credit card was swiped on his iPhone. My receipts were sent to my phone. Apparently, they use a payment/​receipt service that I’d already registered on. I bet it happened at the Herban Legend food truck in Charlotte.

We are from Raleigh but saw this on Groupon before a trip to Asheville so we bought it. We’re so glad we did. We both got the BLTP (mmm pimento cheese) and it was so good! We devoured them. The prices are reasonable for sure, even without a Groupon.
The staff was very nice too– the cherry on top!

Seriously tasty creative sandwiches served up by friendly people out of the side of a fun truck parked to the side of the Elgin Short Stop Citgo station.
I kept walking and driving by and wondering if it was any good, and now I’m kicking myself for not going sooner. Nick is more than willing to try and help you decide what you want to get, but to be honest he isn’t much help because it all sounds delicious.
