Maru Aspen Sushi

Maru is amazing! The food is delicious and the presentation is beautiful. It is a feast for the eyes and the taste buds.
We had the pleasure of dining there earlier this week and look forward to going back. Every dish was even more delicious than the last. It’s simply amazing and we highly recommend it.
A few of our favorites were the Kobocha Salmon specialty sashimi and the black cod.

Amazing lunch!!! Our server was wonderful and the manager stopped by several times to see how we were doing. He was definitely the most hospitable and genuine manager I have come in contact with in a long time. My boyfriend had the miso soup, poke bowl. I had the kale salad with salmon and a sashimi to start. All were amazing!!! Love this place!

OMG found this incredible place by chance, looking for a dog-​friendly restaurant. Both shrimp dishes were amazing as well as the cucumber salad. The staff were all super friendly and pleasant.

This spot is great! If you can get a spot at the bar, have the chef/​owner serve you special sauces and sashimi! Delicious and so fresh. We had to go back again for the twice weekly special fish delivery straight from Japan. Fresh and unique flavors and sauces. Amazing service, great décor.
Maybe a bit pricey, but worth it.

This place is awesome, food was good, service was amazing, atmosphere was great (I’d recommend the outdoor patio with live music where we were). Ask for Bill the server. You won’t be disappointed. He was so friendly! This was our first trip to Aspen & we’ll be back tomorrow to visit with Bill

Great sushi. Very unique dishes and the fish was fresh. My friends said it was better than Matsuhisa which is a lot more expensive. Service was also good. Their bar scene is really good too.

Of the sushi restaurants in Aspen, Maru was least least memorable. Everything was fine, service was good, but none of the food items stood out.

The food was generally good, but the portion sizes were way too small. I know it’s Aspen, but come on! People still want value for money even if they expect to pay more here. We were shocked at the prices, especially $ 6 for miso soup, $ 4 for simple Japanese tea, and around $ 10 for only 2 pieces of sashimi. Miso and tea are usually staple items that are included for free at Japanese restaurants, and even if it’s not you only pay a couple bucks for them. Here at Maru, you have to order multiple dishes each to feel satisfied that you’ve had a proper dinner, but then you leave regretting the cost of the bill for the small amount of food you got. We would have ordered the apple pie for dessert, but for $ 24 we thought that was a crazy waste of money (assuming it’s a slice of apple pie, rather than a whole pie, which I highly doubt).
Pros: The décor is beautiful and the service was great. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Advice to management: The menu should have portion sizes listed on there so you know how many pieces are going to be coming out. We had to ask our waitress, who was very friendly and helpful by the way, about each of the dishes we’d planned to order, and that’s unnecessary since it could just be put on the menu instead. We felt the menu was too vague, and it would be useful providing more description, especially for Japanese terms and unique foods. It’s also hard to sample multiple dishes and share with others when you don’t get nearly enough pieces per plate. The prices really need to come down or you’re going to lose customers — it’s a Sunday night and the place was mostly empty, which is a shame.

Last night was the fourth time at Maru. The food was top notch in presentation and technique. Maru also has a fine wine list. I am delighted to see the interest in sustainable seafood. The only slight negative is in the entrance (Looks like there are several activities going on at this spot. It was tight and slightly confusing about who was doing what.) I am a fan and will return. Yes the prices are high. It was worth the cost.

Great sushi! Decent prices for aspen. Waitress was amazing. The only bad thing was the 2 blonde hostess. Right away they demanded to know if we had a reservation I said we are meeting people hear who are already here. She was extremely rude. Then At the end of the night trying to leave we gave them our jacket ticket. And after 5 minutes of digging she told one of the two of us too come in and get it but, «only one because it was too crowded back there» instead of her moving back and letting the two of us just get our coats. They ruined the entire experience.

Great sushi in Aspen! The most creative rolls I’ve ever seen, try the Te-​la or the Jemz Chan, they won’t disappoint! But don’t stop there… the entrees are just as good as the sushi. The House Made Ramen is fantastic! Just enough spice for Aspen winter nights!
The daily fish box can’t be missed, a selection of fresh fish flown in every day from Japan, you never know what you’re going to get but its always out of this world! The taste and presentation is second to none.

I gave 3 stars for the friendly staffs and one of the three owners, but the food was average. I miss takah sushi.

I honestly regret not checking this place on Unilocal before trying it. 1 star for the great service! 0 star for the food. Not only the food taste pretty bad, the price is unreasonable would not recommend this place to anyone.

The food was okay and our waitress was super nice, but the host at the front, a middle aged man with a receding hairline was an asshole. He insulted me because my tip was not to his liking. Never in my life have I been insulted in a restaurant. You don’t do that. You would get better service at McDonalds. Don’t waste your time or money in this place. Go to the red onion instead. They’re amazing. Although they don’t serve sushi but they’re still awesome.

Great feeling, great staff, great food! Excellent service if you want sushi in aspen this is the place. Bar tenders make excellent drinks! Ambiance is on point. Love this place

prices are too high. the dishes are small and not filling.
the food is great but I had to take a mortgage to pay for it.
and you need to buy more and more since the dishes just don’t fill you up.
they don’t serve stuff like rice or pasta just their incredibly expensive small dish. if your rich and money is no object YES 5 starts, however if your just the avradge Joe, Stay away!

Not sure there are many other options for sushi in Aspen. I had s miso tuna salad that I regretted next day.
Expensive. Nothing memorable.

To put this review into context, consider that I dined here just 3 weeks after opening… I imagine things will continue to improve.
Atmosphere is nice, the staff is really friendly. Service was good. They’ve pulled staff from some other great restaurants in town, so service was on point as were cocktails.
We started with edamame and the sashimi appetizer that is very similar to Matsu, with the sliced peppers on it. I’m drawing a blank on the name, but the dish was delicious.
We also tried 2 rolls, which were fine — not amazing (Crunchy Tuna and JEMZ Chan).
I prefer Matsu for sushi, but this is a great backup if you’re in the mood for sushi and Matsu is full. Everything seemed fresh, I think the rolls just need a little more finessing.

Wow. You have got to be kidding me. Matsuhisa prices with grocery store quality sushi? Nooooooo!
How can these nice folks possibly hope to survive in a market with so many good food choices? I know they have only been open a short while, but this was a very poor experience. At least a few notches down from Takah, which they have replaced. The folks who run this new place seem very nice, but totally overwhelmed. They were unable to master things like miso soup that wasn’t cold, or decent quality fresh fish that wasn’t smothered in overwhelming sauce to disguise its lack of quality. Our party of 4 had several dishes, each of which was either average or below average for grocery store prepared sushi. Nothing at all remarkable. Just journeyman, mundane, uncreative sushi. The prices were a joke. High even by Aspen standards. No wonder the place was 10% full. They will either figure it out, bump up the quality significantly, or they will simply be gone.
