Elite Event: Crust Heaven at Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana

Non stop pizza alert!!! Whatever I was putting into my mouth, I loved it! Omg, authentic, hand made dough, freshly made, literally right out of the brick oven pizza! What else can be better!

When I saw this was at Tufino, I made sure to bum rush the RSVP button.
I love Tufino to pieces, but while their pizza is good, it’s their appetizers that are the real stars of the menu. More on that in a dedicated review of the place. in the meantime, we were lucky enough to sample some of those great apps, as well as the pizza they are so proud of. And why shouldn’t they be? Real wood flames transform these pies to the perfect balance of chewy and crispy crust topped with all the delicious flavor combinations you’d expect.
The owners were genuinely excited to share their food with us, and I couldn’t be more thankful. The waitstaff were –incredible– as well. Everyone was friendly and made the experience an overall blast.
The best part was making some new friends, so to all the Unilocalers out there who came here as their first event, it was really awesome meeting you.

Tufino, the wood fired pizzeria, known for their creative yet traditional pies pulled out all the stops for Unilocal Elites tonight. If you were a carboholic like I am, you’d feel right at home with the choice eats.
A medium sized venue, I saw a fair share of new and old elites this night.
Starting with primi plates, Tufino brought out meatballs, caprese sticks, zucchini fries, beef sliders, and other various finger foods. Good thing they did too because it was my anxiety that they were serving what they’re best known for, and that’d be pizza. At least now I know they have the confidence to stand behind the kitchen to fire up fantastic dishes.
Although I did not get a chance to try everything, I’m confident that they are able to stand behind their prowess with their wood-​fired oven. Thank you Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana and Unilocal Queens for putting together a fine event!

I inadvertently ate cheese. I also intentionally (and unwillingly) ate cheese. Lots of cheese (relative to my dietary standards). I loathe cheese, and am convinced that everyone else who loves the stuff is crazy, with me being one of the few dozen enlightened ones who think otherwise. Did this night change my mind on the cheesy subject matter? Absolutely not. However, I had set the bar for my tolerance to thing (s) I hate on this very night, so I can’t help but give myself a pat on the back in that regard.
Strong wine pours did certainly help numb the senses and other cognitive faculties (direction, touch, discretion, sensibility, well-​guarded-​ness, self awareness, and taste). So I’d like to thank the very generous bar tenders for keeping me well imbibed such that it was easy to ignore the cheese in the dishes (as well as feign disinterest in relation to other eye catching subject matter).
Light dustings of cheese (mozz or parm? Doesn’t matter either way… both gross) on the zucchini fries? No biggie. Cheese in the meatball sliders? Didn’t notice it. Pizza??? It wasn’t even necessary for me to take the cheese off. Needless to say, in spite of the abhorrent substance on most if not all of the dishes presented this night, I can say that the quality ingredients and the labor of love that went into them resulted in nothing less than a splendid product… I apparently found them tasty as I had more than one of each of the aforementioned items.
It’s always a pleasure to attend these events, especially with those of the Queens variety being scarce as of late (stop stealing our CM other cities/​states/​countries! :shakes fist angrily:). Queens has consistently been good to me, with this event being the latest exhibit as to this assertion (would’ve liked to say that a more recent event would have been Exhibit Z… but I’ll leave it at that: the semi-​saltiest of a fond winky wink as can be given:).
It was great to see plenty of familiar faces, as well as meet a few new ones (looking at you girl who broke her phone). Unilocalers make these events shine, and this one at Tufino is no exception, despite the abundance of cheese (I do love Italian food though… glutton for punishment I suppose). Until next time.

Welp, even though somebody’s late with their review — it’s better late than never right, right?!
I also needed some time to compose my thoughts because I was reeling for like a few days over what an awesome night this was! I feel like it had been awhile since I left a Unilocal event wanting to jump on to rooftops and exclaim to the world how much I love Unilocal and the partnering Unilocal Elite Event venue — but Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana killed it. Absolutely killed it.
Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana basically had the whole package — really nice interior with a warm and inviting feel, really friendly employees behind the bar/​at the pizza making station and on the wait staff, fantastic frequency of drinks & food and more importantly — really fantastic food that was made fresh for us! Wheeeeeee!!!
Drinks (if my memory serves me correctly) were red wine or beer and food was broken down into 2 stages:
FIRST STAGE — Hors d’ Oeuvres:
+ Mini meatball sliders on brioche buns (I missed these since it was a trek from my office to this part of Queens).
+ Mini Capellini Cakes with vodka sauce (these were the first thing I tried and they were FAAAANTASTIC!).
+ Fresh mozzarella and caprese skewers with a pesto dipping sauce (yummy fresh and I gave the cherry tomato parts to Ingrid S. cuz I’m weird like that ^_​^).
+ Warm Farro Salad (This wasn’t bad, but I couldn’t eat too much of it… surprisingly tasted a bit like a warm pasta-​like rice).
+ Zucchini Fries (I don’t do zucchini anything).
+ Grilled Eggplant Rollatini (Yeahhhhhhh…no. No to eggplants for me. I’m a carnivore. R0AR).

For the record, ALL of these pizzas were meticulously put together and delicious. Stephen, who was leading the pizza development at the pizza unit (lol) wore gloves and made sure that his pizza army were hygienic and efficient without cutting corners (seriously, I watched them make all of the pizzas because I was A.) In a trance. B.) It was fascinating and C.) Because I gave him my Unilocal nametag and his name was 2 letters off of «Steph»).
As each pizza came out of the oven and baptized with seasonings, olive oil, lemon juice, dressing (not all together, but whatever each pizza type required) it was like a choir of Neapolitan angels singing saucy songs about joy, cheese and love.
My favorite pizzas were easily the Margarita (can’t mess with a classic), the Quatro Formaggi (cheeeeeeese) and Prosciutto E Arugula (it felt healthy because there was green on it and the lemon dressing drizzled on it was like a delightful punch of flavor to the face).
I would absolutely come back here again for some pizza eats and I can’t thank Jando, Unilocal and the fine folks at Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana for giving me yet another reason to come out to this part of Astoria (that despite my living about 3 train stops away in the more happening part of Astoria) that I don’t come out to often (or enough… it seems).
Also, shout out to Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana’s owner and his awesome wife for being super friendly, chatting with me as I stuffed my face with delicious Neapolitan-​style pizza and receptive to feedback… which was all positive, because HOW COULD IT NOT BE?! This place is G-​R-​E-​A-​T! :D

* zOMG, OMG, OMG PIZZZZZAAAAAAA. AAAAAAH. LOVE PIZZA. PIZZA ON EVERYTHING.

Took forever to write this but ever since last Monday I haven’t stop raving about this place, love love LOVED it. First of all I love anything Italian especially pizza. Bare Foot wine was floating through the night and it complimented everything on the menu. Bartenders and servers made sure our glasses were full and the our tummy’s even fuller, I tried to space myself but it was too delicious to pass by.
Antipasto
Mini meatball sliders on a brioche bun — juicy and tender, you can just taste the quality of meat and you can never go wrong with a brioche bun.
Mini Capellini cakes with vodka sauce — one of my many favorites of the night. Small bites of perfection, it was crispy and creamy and that vodka sauce… OMG.
Fresh mozzarella and caprese skewers with pesto dipping sauce — did I mention that I love anything Italian? Usually you get the tomato and mozzarella with a balsamic vinaigrette, but one of the many Italian specialties that I love is pesto sauce and these skewers just went well with it.
Warm Farro Salad — never had such an amazing dish, and you can just taste the hint of pesto in it.
Zucchini fries — first of all, I’m not a big fan of zucchini but you know what they say, «anything fried is good» and these zucchini fries did it’s job.
Pizza
Margherita — you can never go wrong with a margherita, the organic Italian tomato sauce was scrumptious.
Prosciutto E Arugula — I’ve had many Prosciuto & Arugulas especially at the Italian restaurant I used to work at and this one was one of the best and it had to be the white truffle oil.
Grape Expectations — my favorite of the night and by the time this came out I was too stuffed and i couldn’t fit anything else. The combination of the sweet red grape and the house made honey picante with the fior de latte and hot capicolla was beyond good, the first thing I thought is coming back with the boyfriend to have some more.
I will be coming back to enjoy a glass of wine and order a brick over grape expectations, I am very picky with Italian food and brick over pizzas but Tufino made my list of best Italian spots to go to in Queens.
Thanks to the Tufino staff for their attention to detail, you made everyone’s Monday night and again thanks to Jando and the rest of Queens Unilocal for organizing yet another great event.

Wowsers, this past week there were 4 Unilocal events and if you timed it right, your social calendar from last week would’ve been filled to the brim with Unilocal goodness. I, sadly, only made it to 2 events, but enjoyed both immensely (see also upcoming review for Village Prime).
I was very intrigued by this event when it showed up on the Elite calendar and was pretty excited when the Unilocal pass showed up in my inbox. Yes! I got into a 3 hour Unilocal event and there’s gonna be pizza and lots of it!
Off the last stop on the N train, this is definitely a trek for me, but it was well worth it. Around 6:10pm, I showed up out front and was greeted by the cheery Unilocal photographer Nelson and then by awesome sauce Unilocal CM Jandito. Did you know that our very own Jandito is on his way to Hong Kong as we speak and about to break it down to Asia Unilocal CMs on how it is done in NYC… successfully?
So much wine on hand, I stuck with Cabernet the whole time and paced myself. First up, cappellini cakes. This was pretty interesting with unique texture. I am glad this was fried to help soak up some of the alcohol I already imbibed. I also helped myself to some of the zucchini fries. Cool, now the alcohol isn’t going to go straight to my cerebrum. My favorite of the evening was the warm farro salad with pesto sauce, what amazing texture in my mouth!
At 8pm, the pizzas started coming out. Wow, they were absolutely beautiful. Did you know that their wood oven is imported from Naples made from volcanic lava ash from Mt. Vesuvius? Nice tough. I got to try the Margherita and it was a good slice! Yum-​o! The pizzas just kept coming and coming… whoa.
I also really liked that they had a display of big jars of Nutella, brings back so many memories for me living abroad. One cannot live in desolate places without a good stash of Nutella!
And thanks to Gerardo, I met my quota of meeting 5 new Unilocalers and so many more. At one point in the night, there was even a Spanish conversational group going, so not only did I get to eat, but I also got to practice my rusty Spanish!
Thank you Unilocal Queens, Jando, Nelson and the staff at Tufino for making my Monday school night so memorable! Definitely will be back here when I am in the area.

Pizza Pizza!!!
Wonderful ways to kick out the week, having a couple of glasses fill with wine and some good Italian pizza.
Napoletana is a tiny, but nice and cozy spot with great atmosphere that is locate in Astoria.
Jando opened the door at 6:00 PM, giving the welcome the elites, and scanning their party pass. After doing this, he was sending us directly to the bar to get a glass of wine.
Few minutes later the staffs attack us with couple of trace full of: Warm Farro Salad, Mini meatball sliders, and different type of pizza. All food was delicious.
Staff was very friendly, and did a great work serving food and brings some drinks from the bar.

Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana is a small, but cute and cozy spot with great atmosphere in the heart of Astoria. I loved the huge windows that lead to the street. It gave the place nice lighting and feel.
I thought that we would only be served pizza and that I would get bored with the food. Oh, how wrong I was!
The restaurant started us off with several amazing appetizers. First there were mini meatball sliders (one of my favorites) with grated parmesan cheese and basil on a brioche bun. The meat was warm, flavorful, juicy and the basil added to the already delicious sliders. Then there were mini capellini cakes with vodka sauce that was fried to perfection and extremely crispy. They tasted a little bit like potato. We also had fresh mozzarella, tomato and bread crumb on skewers, which were light and refreshing. Next came the warm farro (a type of grain) salad with wonderfully tasting pesto sauce. After that was another favorite of mine: Zucchini fries. They were hot and fresh out of the oven, with well seasoned breading and a light dusting of parmesan sauce.
Soon after all those appetizers, the thin crust pizza started coming out. I tried most of the different types of pizza, starting with the Margherita, which was made out of organic tomato sauce, mozzarella, parmesan and basil. This was quite good but I preferred the other types of pizza that had toppings on them. Prosciutto e Arugula came with mozzarella, prosciutto, lemon juice and truffle oil with baby arugula and parmesan shavings on top. This was wonderful, with delightful tasting meat and all the other flavors came together nicely. I also had the San Gennaro, which consists of mozzarella, Italian sausage, peppers, onions and parmesan. The sausage was savory and zesty. My favorite pizza of the night, however, was Grape Expectations, which had red grapes, gorgonzola, Italian pork (which tasted like bacon) and house made honey. The grapes on the pizza was unique and unexpected, but worked really well and combined flawlessly with the gorgonzola, meat and honey. It was a mix of sweet and slightly savory, and completely mouthwateringly delicious!
The service was great, though I would have liked some options for non alcoholic drinks, besides water. But the servers (especially Emir!) were really patient, friendly and allowed time for some of the Unilocalers to take photos of the food, then making sure we all got what we wanted.
I had an amazing time with old friends and new ones. Thank you to Tufino for providing the venue and exciting, as well as appetizing treats for the evening, and to Jando for organizing yet another awesome event!

Tufino Tufino Tufino, what a gem just around the way. Been a Unilocaler gives you the privilege of getting to know the best spots around:
1– The service was outstanding, you can see the owners running around making sure we where comfortable giving us the best experience. The ambience was chillax and hubby next to me, sets the mood 4 the night.
2-​Barefoot Pinot is my kind of wine, they got me from the start. The FOOD Delish yes DELISH, from the meatballs sliders to the fried zucchini & PIZZA? From the sauce to the crust was a A+ you can taste the passion and dedication in every slice. My favorite was the Prosciutto E Arugula!!! Omg it made me feel like I was eating healthy, at the same time in ever bite LOVE IT !! Coming with the munchkins on the weekend.
3– Thanks to my fellow Unilocal Family for always making me feel welcome & a BIG Thanks to Jando always do it right, you the real Deal holy field. Thanks to Tufinos and Unilocal family.

I woke up Monday morning and my face had exploded to the shape of a balloon. No joke. I’m so glad that I still prevailed and made it out to a Queens event because they are the best and Jando never skimps on the food and libations. Something was flowing in my face constantly all night. The area was a bit cramped but neat. It was like an old Italian dungeon and we all had to carry or awkwardly toss our coats to the side. But after a few glasses of cabernet it really didn’t matter.
Appetizers: Mini beef and veal meatballs with a rich tomato sauce, shaved parmesan, basil on a brioche bun were amazing. As were the mini capellini cakes with vodka sauce and the warm farro salad with pesto. I insisted Steph try the farro salad because she was confused and thought it was a vegetable. After I insisted that I wasn’t trying to poison her she relented and acknowledged that it was more like a savory grain and almost delicious. I felt slightly victorious since she usually doesn’t eat green things. Zucchini fries and mozzarella and caprese skewers were great as well.
One of the better pizza places we’ve honestly had at any Unilocal events. They kept churning a different variety of Neapolitan thin crust pizzas out of their wood ovens. The Margherita, Prosciutto E. Arugula with a tangy lemony sauce, Quattro Formaggi with all the cheese, San Gennaro with crumbly sausage and roasted peppers, and the Grape Expectations which was a very pleasant surprise. I would never think grapes on a pizza would be appetizing but it tasted like roasted honey and complimented the gorgonzola cheese very well. Went home in a food and wine coma. The staff was great and constantly asked if we were doing alright. Many thanks to Jando for a great event and Nelson for his superb photographing.

This definitely ain’t the pizza party you throw for your five-year-old’s birthday. With the vino flowing abundantly (the ultimate social lubricant) and some of the chillest members of the Unilocal community in one room, Tufino and Jando teamed up to host a shindig that turned all our Monday frowns upside down.
While we guzzled down glasses of Barefoot wine, the kitchen turned out healthy platters of appetizers. The zucchini fries, dusted with seasoned breading and a healthy handful of Parmesan, were crispy and delicious, especially with a dip in the accompanied cup of marinara. Soon after came cups of warm farro with pesto sauce and caprese skewers (with cubes of bread, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and basil). My personal favorite were the capellini bites — small breaded cutlets of capellini pasta, dipped in vodka sauce. I could have been left alone in a corner with a plate of these and be as happy as a clam.
Still, with the wood-​firing oven (imported all the way from Italy!) blazing contentedly in the corner of the room, all eyes were soon on Steve, our pizza chef extraordinaire, as he expertly pressed out balls of dough faster than I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t long before my conversations with new friends got cut short as we stuffed our mouths with pizza slices. During its short stint in the oven, the dough had gotten beautifully charred and crisp on the outside, while remaining soft and chewy on the inside. I partook of (a little too many) non-​meat slices, conveniently forgetting about whatever diet I claimed to be on when I first came in.
In all the fun, my phone ended up doing a faceplant onto Tufino’s floor, which means I got introduced to many fellow Unilocalers as ‘the girl who just broke her phone’, but thanks to the many friendly folks who tried to find me nearby screen replacement services and driving directions back home. And, of course, many huge thanks and drunken hugs to Jando and the amazing staff at Tufino — it was a wonderful, delicious night and totally worth a broken iPhone screen :)

Knowing that the space was small and the guest list was large I wasn’t looking forward to being a smashed wallflower at this event, but I must say it was NOT the case because the planning here hit the mark to accommodate the event. Tables were removed from the restaurant, the drinks kept simple to three choices of good wine, food was plentiful and brought through out the space to the attendees, service was excellent by keeping track of who tried what and making sure everyone got a sample, and the elite only crowd was especially festive for a monday night!
Off the bat (a nod to all my Mets fans out there!), this event brings out the big guns with incredible meatball sliders that were simply amazin’ tender, saucy and flavorful starters! Fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil on crostini with a pesto dipping sauce was excellent. The warm farro (a type of grain) served in a cup with what tasted like pesto had an interesting texture and I enjoyed it. Zucchini fries were a big hit, but I passed on these saving myself for the forthcoming pizza.
The main event were the pizzas and they did NOT disappoint along with the perfect, quality toppings, the dough and the high heat oven made them some of the best I’ve tried in a while. When the Margherita slice is made perfectly you know anything coming out of that oven is going to blow you away. The four cheese pizza was a fantastic slice as well.
I liked during the second round of pies coming out of the oven the servers brought them straight to the front of the restaurant to make sure the food was evenly distributed. Throughout the night the attention to detail here and hospitality is what stood out in my mind most along with the stellar food make me want to come back here soon! I heard a fellow Unilocaler exclaim as he grabbed a seat in a nearby chair «Ahhh. I’M SO FULL!» the mark of a great night!
Shoutouts: As always thank you Jando for putting another incredible event together — I really love the opportunity that the no +1 give us to meet and talk to new people. Darya S, Sofya M, Roman D., Carolina B (Not C), Amy C (Not B), Lisa R.(The Queen of Queens! haha) were great company throughout the night and made it a blast!

Por fin! An event where I stayed sober throughout to actually remember what happened. (Sorry Jadon, I’ve been bs-​ing in my previous EE reviews.) Just kidding.
Great bites/​pizza, great wine and great people! The staff worked so hard both at the bar and in the kitchen too. And I think Jando had to stop by at a liquor store just to get more wine for Unilocalers? How nice!
Apparently there was some buzz about this Bouncher person at the event last night. I’d like to meet this person and have his/​her job, por favor.

Unilocal event on a Monday — best way to start off the week. The hour long commute from work in Sunset Park to the last stop on the N for. pizza? Yes. Tufino’s did not disappoint.
The venue is pretty tight. It was cleared out to make room for this elite only event. The food started flowing after I took a few sips of Moscato.
Beef and veal sliders were excellent. The patties were juicy, flavorful and amazingly tender. The slider bun is what usually runs a good slider, if tough and crusty. Fortunately, these buns were fluffy and sealed the deal.
There was also crisp zucchini fries and excellent mozzarella&caprese skewers. My favorites were definitely the capellini cakes and farro salad though. I’m a sucker for creamy, starchy, comfort foods and both of these really delivered. There was so much to go around but alas, pizza was coming up!
The anticipation was mounting. The oven was fired up. It was getting hot. That first bite of margarita was happiness. So fresh. Crisp crust. I wish I had room to try the variety of pies after pies being served up but capped at 2. It all smelled and looked incredible though.

First Elite event in Queens, and right in my new hood!!! Loved meeting some new Queens Unilocalers (shout-​out to Sofya M. and Mike S.!) and Jando, of course. Tufino is a gem that I’m happy I discovered. Atmosphere was cute and cozy, service worked hard to please, and my favorite part of any event, the food, was constantly flowing and never lacking. Some of the appetizers were zucchini fries, Farro salad, mozzarella and caprese on a stick, and meatball sliders. Then came the various slices of pizza. I had the margarita, white, and grape pizzas. So cheesy and warm and yummy! Boy, it was good that I was heading to the gym after this event because I went for the cheese, literally.
There were also alcohol specials for the night. I went for a sweet glass of moscato for the evening. Thanks for tonight Jando! Will have this place in mind next time I’m craving Italian.

Pizza night on a wonderful Monday night. Great venue for a 50 50 split of a wine bar with a great wood fired pizza oven. Owners and service was great. It’s a nice place in Astoria for dinner or for casual friends get together.
Wines were flowing and the Barefoot Moscato really did well with all the samplings of food. The highlights of the night were the meatball sliders. Juicy and flavorful with veal and beef. The fried zucchini fries with a great sauce. Crisp and salty. Faro which was creamy with Parmesan. Almost like a creamy cheesy rissoto. The mini cappellini cakes. Crisp topped cheese with a pasta like filling. Pizza highlights were the white brie pizza and the spicey honey pancetta pizza. Crisp and soft crust from the wood fired oven.
Thanks again to Jando and the Tufino owners and staff. Had a great night and caught up with old Unilocalers and met a few new.

Pizza and wine, the perfect Monday fix!
Unilocal Elites who brave the cold to travel far and wide, out to Ditmars Boulevard, Queens was rewarded with delicious fired wood oven pizza! Our evening started with a glass of sweet moscato from Barefoot. Just the perfect glass of wine to enjoy before the delicious foods.
Appetizers such as the Meatball Sliders made its way out of the kitchen and into my hands. I loved the flavor combination of beef and veal. It was really juicy and tender between the bread. Fried Zucchini also won my heart! I loved the crispiness of every bite I had. Another honorable mention was the skewer stick with cheese, cherry tomato, and bread — that pesto sauce was amazing!
Here comes the pizza! My favorite slice of the night was most definitely the Prosciutto with Baby Arugula with White Truffle Oil. It was topped with fresh ingredients and the crust was so soft! I also loved the hint of lemon taste. San Gennaro was another favorite of mine. The interactions between the sweet honey and spicy was a jackpot for my taste buds. Not to mention, that sausage was bangin’!

Yo I havent had a slice of pizza in almost 2 years!
Why would I attend an event like this, you ask?
Bc Im a risk taker!
(I’m paying for it now — !Turn up tummy time! — but it was totally worth it.)

Boy am I happy I did
First Elite event DOLO! I ended up mingling with some really cool peeps too. **Shout out to yall** I enjoyed the constant flow of Barefoot Moscato and those small bites were a treat! From the juicy meatball sliders to the creamy Farro salad to the margarita pizza slices, everything was delish.
Thanks to Jando for throwing such a great event, thanks to Tufinos for the amazing food.
