Iji

When Iji first opened up I was excited to try it since I didn’t have to travel to Sunnyside for my sushi fix and I was surprised to find out their fish was pretty damn good. But… Over the years the taste and quality have gone down and I no longer eat here due to my spicy tuna roll and tuna avacado roll giving me a case of sea sickness on land during my meal. I immediately stopped eating the meal and would never eat here again.

I think they are no longer in business. Place has been closed for a few days… probably more :/

What a crappy run business I called tonight at 1015 and place an order and was give a 1055 delivery time. I called at 1115 and said it was out and on it’s way. I called multiple times after 1115 only to be ignored multiple times because they recognized the #. Then when I ran from my house line they picked up right away. I expressed my frustration to the person saying «I don’t care it’s not my business». Well I don’t care either and u will never again have my business. Bye Iji or Yama sushi whatever u call urself.

I stopped in today because I wanted an order of edamames. Upon entering I noticed the health department letter grade was pending. Also when I stopped in the time was around 12:30 or 1:00 pm. So the restaurant had just opened. The hostess prompted took my take out order. I noticed they were people eating in. I sat in the waiting area for my order to be ready, while sitting I realized I had to use the restroom.
I walked to the back of the restaurant where the restroom is located. I turn on the light and lock the door as I turn around I notice the bathroom garbage is full and over flowing with trash and there is no toilet tissue. Lucky for me I carry tissue in my purse. When I go to wash my hands I notice there is a bottle of liquid hand soap, upon looking closer I notice the liquid hand soap is just that liquid because the soap was gone and the bottle was then filled with water. Again lucky for me I carry hand sanitizer. Honestly I’m a bit disgusted because as I think about it the restaurant just opened and the bathroom is dirty and uncleaned which means it was not cleaned the night before. So gross…
At this point I didn’t even want the edamames because I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. As I was exiting the restroom the hosted handed me my order. I took my order said thank you and walked out. I’m sorry but the first garbage I found I dumped my order in.
Sorry but I can honestly say I will not come here again and since the nail salon I go to is across the street from here I can’t wait to see the letter grade they receive from the health department.

At 6:45 last night I ordered 3 sushi rolls and chicken udon from Iji on GrubHub. SORRY FOR BEING SO DEMANDING.
We were quoted a delivery time of 7:42, which was already a long time. But the food didn’t show up at 7:42. Or 7:45. Or 8:00, or 8:15 for that matter. The restaurant wouldn’t answer the phone, so I called GrubHub, which got through to them. The food finally arrived at 8:30.
All three rolls were warm and the udon broth was cold. Well, I know most of it was cold, but I can’t be sure about the temperature of the broth that was spilled all over the bottom of the bag, the sushi, and then my counter.
I called the restaurant back to ask for some sort of discount for the bad food and nearly 2 hour (!) delivery time. He told me I could have $ 5 off of the udon. When I politely said that wasn’t appropriate, he hung up on me.
Everyone always says, «I wish I could give this place zero stars.» But I feel like Iji really earned its single star by not turning «Dragon Roll» into a euphemism for my intestines. I was really expecting them to do that too. So if you want a terrible experience but DON’T want violent digestive pain, Iji might be right for you.

, as I was looking for a quick lunch to fill my sushi craving. The order took about 25 minutes from being placed to show up on my doorstep, and I live about 2 miles away from the restaurant in LIC.
All in all, it was a good meal. I would order from them again. The sushi isn’t necessarily the fanciest sushi you’ll ever eat, but it is fresh and yummy. The price is also great. They have a $ 10 delivery minimum, but I just added a serving of spicy mayo to my order for .50 to hit it. (Lunch special = $ 9.50 for 3 rolls).

I dropped into Iji to for a takeout order. I got the three roll lunch special. I got the spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, and the chicken tempura roll. None of the rolls were that enjoyable to me and I found them all to be quite tasteless.
The lunch special is VERY reasonably priced so that was somewhat of a red flag as though it was to go to be true. Iji wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. I get emotional about my food and I felt nothing toward this meal. It was just ehh.
You get what you pay for. If you want a cheap meal by all means this is your place but I’d rather spend a little more and enjoy it.

Yo, this is my neighborhood haunt! It’s everything I could ask for of my sushi: fresh and cheap!
$ 3 for a maki roll? Score! $ 1 for sashimi and nigiri? Win! Keep them coming!
I order from here at least once a week, and I’ve never had a bad experience. Some other reviewers mentioned small portions, but I’ve never had anything smaller than what I would get from another place. check out those photos!
They mostly do delivery, so the restaurant experience may not be the best way to gauge this place. Though let’s be real, we’re talking about $ 3 sushi, so no complaints here! :) Besides, their tea is pretty awesome.
Point is here, you get hella bang for your buck. Not a dollar goes to waste. Seriously. Your stomach and wallet will thank you!

You know how women are constantly holding your hand and telling you size doesn’t matter while you cry tears of bitter shame into a pillow?

Turns out size does kind of matter. While Iji has some specialty rolls that met my expectations… satisfied me, if you will… most of the standard rolls we ordered were tiny. If you believe it’s not the size, but the quality and flavor that counts, Matsu will not disappoint. Sushi size queens will be left wanting.

Some 4 stars are just worth more than others. After I was thoroughly satisfied by Bai sushi on the other side of the subway track, I tried IJI. And boy, now I have to drop everyone down a star to fit IJI into the 4 star category. C’mon… 1 dollar sushi and sashimi. So cheap.
The interior décor was pretty good for a cheap Japanese restaurant. It rivals those pricier ones at Ditmars Blvd. I also like the Chinese pop song playing… it goes well with the serene décor. Fine. Not really.
Really, cheap is all it is. There are other good decored sushi places in Astoria, but I think this is the cheapest one. The fish is also good compared to the rest. The rice, so-​so. 12 bucks for an 8 piece sushi with california roll? That’s the price for refrigerated supermarket sushi.
Did I mention its cheap?

Oh my, Iji, what a surprise! Affordable and fresh neighborhood sushi? Prompt service? And oddly enough, a pretty but completely empty dining room? Why don’t more people know about this place?
I ordered strictly off of Iji’s 50% sushi a la carte menu. I know, I know, buying sushi on sale is kinda shady. But with most pieces $ 1 each, the value was amazing. I enjoyed super fresh scallop, salmon toro, white tuna, yellowtail, striped bass, snapper, squid, and fluke. Each piece of fish was a good size, super fresh, and tasty. (Mind you, this is a Sunday evening.)
I declined to eat any rolls and saved myself from the mayo and carb overload. Perhaps I’ll try it or more kitchen type dishes next time. But one thing is for sure — the fish is incredible!
Update — I’ve been back two more times with a large group and we went with the party platters — you get a set of rolls to share and miso soup. We had the salmon avocado, tuna avocado, shrimp mango avocado, yellowtail jalapeño, chicken tempura, and iji roll — all were tasty, but most were par and unremarkable. The value, however, cannot be beat.

Been going to IJI periodically since the day it opened in Astoria, it’s had its highs and lows since opening. It’s a really good cheap sushi place; the service is friendly and nice. Although, they do appear to be understaffed, which can cause a longer than usual wait.
For what it is and the price, IJI is probably the best sushi spot in Astoria with the most bang for the buck. Plus, IJI isn’t just a hole-​in-​wall restaurant either. It’s a shame that the location of the restaurant doesn’t draw too many people to eat at the restaurant (a lot of to-​go orders and delivery).

I had the chicken teryaki with brown rice and miso soup. The chicken was tender and delicious, and there was a lot of it! I thought the miso soup was a bit fishy tasting, maybe that’s what miso is supposed to taste like, but I wasn’t into it that much.
We ordered the pork gyoza and they were tasty too! We got them to share, but I wish it came with more. For 4 bucks though, can’t complain.
My girlfriend had the spicy California roll (which i didn’t try), and peanut avocado roll. I really did like the peanut avocado. It’s an interesting combo that worked very well together. When we order from this place next time I will definitely have some of that!
The rolls were a bit small and skimpy on the rice. All in all, a pretty decent sushi place if you’re looking for sushi on a Monday when JJ’s is closed. :x

This place used to rock, but it’s slipping. Iji is down the street from my apartment, so I was happy to eat there every few weeks. Their Astoria roll was incredible, so I willingly paid $ 13 for it. Overall, service was good and food was fresh and yum.
However, the last two times I was there, I was a little annoyed at the service and food. My fiancée and I were among two tables of people at the restaurant, but we barely saw our waitress. Since we were not in a rush, I didn’t mind terribly because the waitress was taking lots of takeout orders. Then the food sucked. The Astoria roll was this puny little thing, where it seemed rude to charge $ 13 for it. Also, they clearly forgot about one of our rolls but kept saying «it wasn’t ready yet,» and it took about 30 minutes for a simple salmon roll.
If you are looking for sushi in Astoria, do yourself a favor and head over to Watawa on Ditmars — great experience across the board, and about the same price.

Iji is this little hole-​in-​the-​wall place that serves reasonably-​priced sushi and is a bit down Broadway from the most expensive Linn and the slightly more expensive Osaka. The thing is, the sushi isn’t that amazing. It’s good and if I wanted some sushi in a pinch and it was the only place around I’d be happy to go there. But, I find myself hard pressed to go there sometimes when I know that there is better sushi (see my review of Osaka) closeby. I would find myself going here if the other sushi places were jammed up certainly
My big metric for sushi places in terms of taste is how they do their spicy tuna. Usually I like a creamy, spicy, and rich spicy tuna… at Iji, they make a drier, more crunchy spicy tuna that’s not really my thing.
So, bottom line, probably worth a try if you haven’t been here, but I wouldn’t do cartwheels or anything. This is a Goldilocks «soup too cold» type of place for me.

I come here at least once a week… i really like this place. I have never had a complaint about anything ive ever ordered here.
My only complaint is how freaking slow they are. everytime i come for takeout i am waiting at least 25mins and most times i am the only one in there… its a little annoying.

I am addicted to their crazy tuna roll and order about once or twice a week, but lately have been very disappointed.
Every time I place an order (keep in mind that I order the exact same thing about two times a week) I not only get a different price, but 9 times out of 10 they screw up my order. Either something is missing, or they take a solid hour and a half to get everything together.
Considering that I spend at least $ 40 (if not close to $ 90) a week there, order the same thing every time, and always pick it up myself you’d think they’d be willing to send their delivery man when they forget something… but they always refuse to. You’d think they would give me a cup of tea when I wait for 45 minutes for my food, but they refuse to do so.
Instead, I sit there while the emo pop blasts through the almost empty restaurant. Or I walk back to get whatever they forgot passing by the delivery man outside, just to have them shove me out the door You’d expect they at least give me free edamame or something after they forget to include half of my order. But I guess they just don’t want my business.
The food is awesome, but the service sucks. Now looking for my new sushi place in Astoria.

My roommates were out tonight and I had the apartment to myself, so what do I do? Laundry and order delivery from Iji. The prices are decent and I’ve tried a few other places in Astoria so I decided to listen to my fellow Unilocalers and order from Iji on seamlessweb.
I was underwhelmed. $ 13 for a dinner bento is pretty decent for the amount of food I got, but my fish just didn’t taste like much. The salmon was ok but the tuna was just watery. Very sad. The delivery was quick and everything else was good– the miso soup and shumai that came with the meal were really quite good.
I’d try this again, but thus far Watawa still holds the crown for Astoria Sushi for me.

So this bright lighted restaurant has always caught my eye. But I always never see anyone inside every time I pass by… why the isolation? I just HAD to find out.
Iji is good but it’s not the best I’ve had. The mango avocado roll seemed freshly new to me. Never heard of mangoes with anything else in a sushi but it wasn’t so bad. Probably because I was hungry and just stuffing it in my mouth. The miso soup is the best I’ve ever had. Fresh mushrooms and the best part, more seaweed!
Since my friend is a noob at holding chopsticks, the waitress actually taught him how to hold it. That’s a first. The place is fanned but you can barely feel it, I wish they had an AC/​turned it on.

Linn was closed for lunch so I tried this place. I had chirashi sushi special. To my dissapointment, it was served with sashimi and rice separately on the plate (that’s NOT chirashi my friend). Size and portion was rather on smaller scale. Freshness of fish was excellent.
Waitress was very friendly, she told me how far she can deliver food on the map, etc. Interior was probably one of the nicest for sushi place in Astoria.
I’m comparing to other non-​Japanese owned sushi place in Astoria area, and I have to say I’d rather going to Watawa or Sakura on Ditmars. They all use the same dish plate, so you can really compare the quality, size, and portion, and Iji was probably #3 on my list.
