History

Established in 2011.

After working in chiropractic offices, spas, and other people’s private practices for a few years, Sonia struck out on her own in 2011. People told her for years, «you’ll never be able to build a thriving practice unless it’s in Manhattan!» An Astoria resident since 2005, she heartily disagreed! Sonia is thrilled to be serving the community she loves, using her nine years of massage experience to help out fellow residents, whether they are dealing with chronic pain issues, training for the big event, or just want to wind down with some expert, knowledgeable touch.

Sonia has been a licensed massage therapist in New York State since September 2007. Since then she has taken advanced studies in trigger point and medical massage techniques, and has obtained certifications in advanced sports massage and neuromuscular therapy. She worked in physical therapy and chiropractic offices, a spa, and the New York Marathon and Triathlon before opening her private practice in 2011. She has also been a massage therapist for the Women’s Tennis Association at the US Open since 2009, where she has worked on some of the world’s top athletes.

Sonia is truly amazing. She makes you feel comfortable and she is very talented in finding your problem areas and targeting those areas during the massage. Some places start the time while you undress and speak with them but Sonia doesn’t start until she actually begins the massage. I wasn’t sore after and my back was no longer in pain. I’ve only gone once since I just discovered her but I will 100% be back and I’ve already recommended her to my boyfriend and other friends!

Sonia is awesome. I don’t see her that often (my first and only appointment prior was two years ago!) but am always impressed when I do. It is obvious that she knows the intracacies of the body, is nonjudgemental, professional, and compassionate. She offered me some great suggestions to avoid or mitigate painful conditions. No need to hem and haw about a decision here, just book a spot with her!

I’ve been telling my friends how great Sonia is, and I guess it’s time to tell the rest of the world. The first time I went to her, I had injured my back and needed to find something to help. I told her about my various injuries and she did a great job of focusing on the areas that needed help without skipping over anything else. She has a really calming presence and I feel 100% comfortable on her table. I’d highly recommend her!

Massages seemed like a needless luxury to me until I herniated three discs that my doctor told me were too damaged for surgery. He recommended «medical massage» but I was afraid to trust anyone until I read the Unilocal reviews about Sonia. When I met her, I relaxed immediately because she’s so calm, sweet, and professional. And she definitely knows what she’s doing! At first, I felt like nothing was happening because all she did was move parts of my lower body around, but then I realized that she had identified the damaged discs and nerve roots and was gently opening the discs and releasing the pressure. Throughout the whole massage, she explained what she was doing and why she was doing it. And I felt so much better afterward that I booked multiple appointments with her. I’m very grateful for her help.

I have been looking for Sonia my whole life! I was used to getting massage every 2 weeks to once a month for last 10 years! Ever since I started doing office job. At least 8h staring at PC daily — every couple of weeks my upper back/​shoulders would remind me it’s time for body work, omg, regretting how much $$$ I spent till I found Sonia. After her first appointment I didn’t need massage for next 2 months! That was a true miracle! Now I go see her every 3 months and recommending her to everyone, who asks for it or doesn’t, she is miraculous. I’m so happy I found her thru Unilocal ;)

I am recovering from ACL reconstruction surgery and since I’ve been up and walking again (and long walks back and forth to the subway at that), all of the muscles in my post-​op leg have been getting very tight. I saw Sonia for a 1-​hour massage. We talked for a few minutes before we got started, and she asked what I would like to focus on. We decided to spend a good amount of time on my post-​op leg followed by a more general full-​body massage. She found and worked on a knot in my quad and on the side of my calf. I didn’t even know they were there. The rest of the massage was great too, and she was careful to ask for feedback regarding her pressure and motions.
I walked out feeling like a new woman; my post-​op leg felt so free after being so tight. I can definitely see the benefit of massage therapy combined with physical therapy, etc.
I found her pricing to be very reasonable, and I’m sad I moved to DC and can’t make massages with Sonia a regular thing.

I’ve been to Sonia twice and she is AMAZING! She takes her time to talk to you about what your problem areas are and what benefits you’d like to see from your session. She then tailors a massage to your specific needs and gives you tips on self-​massage and stretching exercises after your session (definitely not a cookie cutter massage). She even emailed me a week after my last massage to see how I was feeling. In short, she’s a professional and skilled therapist and I highly recommend her!

I just visited Sonia for the first time recently and was thoroughly impressed with her approach (which advocates a softer touch than most deep tissue massage) and her knowledge of physiology, which allowed her to really intuit where my muscles needed to be worked the most. And work them she did!
I’ve gotten countless deep tissue massages over the years, in NYC and elsewhere, and I can honestly say that Sonia is one of the most gifted masseurs I’ve ever encountered — and her prices are really reasonable for the quality of service she provides.

I had a 1 hr massage with Sonia… I felt so relaxed and un-​knotted afterwards. She worked my entire body, which was much needed and also found knots in mid-​back and above my butt that I did not even know were there.
I am used to the hard DEEP massages, that are sometimes painful. My traps are like leather pads, I think I need this type of massage to break them down. Sonia’s massage was not hard and deep like my guy back in Canada. But she was very thorough and meticulous… it really felt like she combed through my trap muscles with adequate pressure and precise motions.
Overall, I really enjoyed the full body massage, it felt like a tune-​up that my body much needed.
Sonia was friendly and professional. She gave me some suggested stretches for my neck.

Her credentials are what brought me to Sonia, and her skill and personality is what keep me coming back. As a stagehand, I frequently work my body to a point of aches and sore muscles, and Sonia is capable of really discovering and focusing deeply on problem areas. As a person, she’s friendly and fun to talk to, and it makes me feel good to contribute to my community as she’s an independent local business here in Astoria.
And she’s also extremely kind and flexible. After a last minute schedule change she made on my behalf, I managed to lock myself in my bedroom. (Don’t ask.) Still, she remained gracious and was willing to massage her schedule (pun intended!) yet again to accommodate my foolishness.

I’m about to have my third session with Sonia, and have a fourth one lined up. She is a top notch massage therapist, with strong knowledge of anatomy and technique. The first time I went in, I had a specific low back complaint and asked her for deep tissue work. I’ve sometimes had trouble convincing massage therapists that I a) want a deep massage and b) can take it, but Sonia had the strength and the willingness to do it and her treatment «unstuck» a lot of stuck places. The second time I went in, I asked for a standard, full-​body massage. I was practically in a trance of relaxation by the end of it. I can’t recommend her highly enough. She also has a very friendly and welcoming website, if you’re new to massage, and a super convenient online appointment system.
Her office is in a chiropractor’s office, but she only rents space there. I mention it because there is a lot of anti-​vaccination material in the office, including a video that plays during the day, and it can be a little off-​putting if you don’t share those values.

Okay, a little dramatic, but if you’ve got the hellish chronic muscle pain that I do, you’ll rejoice that you’ve found Sonia.
I gave her a try based on the glowing Unilocal reviews, and the fact that she’s conveniently located in my neighborhood. I was hoping against hope that her claim of familiarity with neuromuscular trigger point work wasn’t just a bunch of buzz words on her website. Most LMTs can rub your muscles, few take on the additional training required for neuromuscular work, which I feel is the only reason to splurge on a massage. You want it to have lasting, positive effects, not just make you feel «relaxed.»
