92.9 Dave FM

As a kid growing up in Atlanta, WZGC 92.9 FM was always Z-​93 Classic Rock and it stayed that way for years and years. That’s why it was so surprising to discover while visiting Atlanta this summer that Dave FM had replaced the old station.
I only had a chance to listen to Dave a few times in the car but I liked what I heard: a good mix of mostly new indie rock and some older ‘90s alternative. I was excited that Atlanta had such a great station on mainstream radio and was looking forward to hearing more during my next visit to the ATL.
Sadly, I stumbled upon this blog
recently and it seems that Atlanta radio is moving towards All Top 40 All the Time. Sad day.

Music snobbery aside, I think that Acoustic Sunrise is great.
Here’s my take on it. Like Nick P, I am a bit of a music snob. In fact, I refused to listen to «mainstream» radio at all for something like 5 years. Then my XM receiver died and I was too cheap to purchase a new one, so I canceled my service.
I’m just not a huge fan of Atlanta radio (and I’ve been listening to it on and off for 30 years, so I know what I like and don’t like). Acoustic Sunrise is a rare gem in a sea of «blah» Atlanta top-​40-​esque shows. So whether other towns have better shows or not, I think it’s awesome in comparison to what we have here.
…And to touch on the actual music for a sec, I don’t think I have ever heard Aerosmith or Third Eye Blind on Acoustic Sunrise. Not to say that they’ve never been played on the show, but they are not standard fare.

I hate to be the music snob here, but I was disappointed. The reviews here got me kind of excited, but this does not compare with KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic or even WICB (Ithaca)‘s Breakfast with the Beatles. The first three songs I heard were by Jack Johnson, Live, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. After Third Eye Blind and Aerosmith joined the playlist, we turned the radio off — nothing new here folks, move on.
Again, sorry I’m a music snob, but this was a letdown and I won’t turn it on again.

I love Acoustic Sunrise. It’s great to listen to when I’m on my way home from wherever it is I slept on Saturday night. They play songs you wouldn’t normally hear on the radio and acoustic versions of songs you know and love.

I would not normally think of reviewing something like weekend mornings on Dave FM, but I agree, Acoustic Sunrise is a nice way to wake up. No annoying weekday radio personality chat. No commercials screaming at you. It’s a learning experience for me. I grew up in the Midwest where Top 40 reigns. It’s nice to have something that’s familiar with new favorites thrown in.

When Organic X on 99 X goes to commercial, Acoustic Sunrise is my quick switch.
Filled with the typcial John Mayer, Jack Johnson mixes with some Dave thrown in — Basically it’s th top 40’s singing to acoustic guitars. Pleasant for the Sunday morning drive into church or out to brunch.
And I do find myself sometimes forgetting to switch back to my Organic X. So I’ll say it, I’m thankful for another station playing perfect mood music for an lazy morning of coffee drinking and comic reading (even though its owned and operated by a corporate money hungry company).

I read Lauren’s review for this great morning program weekdays on Dave FM and I had to immediately write a review that gave this program props. When I wake up to the Dave FM acoustic sunrise on the weekends it makes my whole day 10 times better than it originally would have been.
What really makes the acoustic sunrise so appealing to me personally is the soft acoustical hangover friendly melodies. This is necessary on weekends like mine were there is no telling how bad my head may feel after a night in my living room playing video games and drinking 12 – 16 bottles of Smirnoff Ice. I could potentially wake up with the type of headache you would get after Micheal Moore sat on your head for 2 or 3 hours. The enchanting melodies of acoustic sunrise almost act like a pair of hands from a glorious angel, massaging my temples and caring for my splitting headache which seems to get progressively worse the older I become.
