Emory Family Medicine At Dunwoody

I got here 15 minutes early like they asked and I am still waiting for my 10 appointment time and it’s almost 11! My time is just as valuable as your time… ridiculous! Awful!

Oh, where do I begin?! This place overcharged, mis-​diagnoses and is full of itself due to containing the word «emory» in its’ title.
In 2012 — I went crawling & crying to them with excessive lower abdominal pain to be told (after 3 docs there checked up on me) that I have «weak abdominal muscles & need physical therapy.» Click, click on their laptops 2 appts later, I am heavily exercising and heavily sedated on anything that would have codeine in it (which I would refuse), I returned to be told — vaginal exam is needed. Then they do the exam, x-​rays, perform anything under the sun for my annual as well and consult some more to confirm the initial diagnosis. So, I have 2 more months of physical therapy while in excruciating pain (age 30, physically active and in shape). The kicker is I was crying from pain and could not sit at all, much less work at my desk. I asked them to sign off on papers for my work, they delayed by 3 months (I kid you not), my work never approved and had me on unapproved leave… I dropped speaking with Dr. Kulshreshta as I was helpless.
Fast forward to 2014 when I got pregnant, within the first 2 months, it transpired that I have had rather large fibroids that ended up almost threatening the life of my daughter. I ended up w/​a C-​section and a surgery to remove them at the same time, this time I went out of network with someone who has magic surgeon hands… paid thousands in cash and cursed UHC & Emory Family @ Dunwoody.
I had been overcharged with Emory Family Dunwoody, ignored when I would call the nurse line and request to speak to «my» doctor, asked to go to the ER as they don’t have appointments available until 2 weeks later… I don’t know where this ends… This place is an utter disappointment & a waste of your time, health and money. Don’t go there!

This review is specifically for the physical therapy part of the Emory Clinic. I have been a frequent patient at this location since I had knee reconstruction therapy. The staff that help you schedule your appointments is very friendly and helps with meeting your scheduling needs. They have early hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7 AM to 3 PM and late hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 AM to 7 PM.
The therapists cater to your need based on how much you want to push yourself. Naturally, they are going to push as you hard as they can but will take it down a notch if needed. There is a variety of equipment available as well as exercises for any body part. The only issue is that sometimes they overbook and tend to be a little busy where you don’t get as much attention as you should. They do a great job of logging all your progress over time and pushing you to higher levels so you can have a faster recovery.

Avoid this place. I always have a long wait. I was just charged over $ 300 for only speaking to a doctor for TEN minutes — no tests were taken or anything. Then I called to try to get my bill explained and its been a week and no one will return my call. Horrible experience.

I chose this location since I used the Emory Clinic back in school so I figured it would be an easier transition.
This location is conveniently located a mile from where I am living now. I never wait long in the waiting room but for some reason I always wind up waiting the longest after the nurse does the initial physical and check-​up. I ended up waiting at least 30 minutes for the doctor. I was able to keep track because the motion sensor light kept turning off every 15 minutes, and it turned off twice.
The doctors are always very nice. My doctor was a nice Dr. Shah, who got me exactly what I needed, and I was out in an efficient 15 minutes.
Overall, while there can sometimes be a hefty weight, I feel the quality of service is worth it.

ridiculous! I went there for annual check. Then I talked to the doctor mentioning I have some error problems. The doctor did not give me any treatment! but, later I received a bill saying ear treatment. I called them, they say you discussed it with the doctor so you have to pay regardless if the doctor gives you any treatment or not.

I HATE this place! I had to go see a PCP, Dr. Sunkara, because I got new insurance and needed a referral to see a pain management dr I had been seeing for over 4 years due to a very sever head on collision. First, she forgot to submit the referral. After two weeks I had to call and ask what was going on?! At this point I was out of my medication so she called me in one week for one medication and two weeks for the other. WTH? So I finally get the referral for Emory Center for Pain Management. But they were not going to be able to see me for several weeks which means I was going to be out of my medication again. I contact my PCP who writes a RX for a month of the meds I was taking. I go see this pain dr, Dr. Patel, and he tells me that it is all in my head. Riiiiiight, and I just imagined that I hit stopped cars in a turning lane head on at 50 mph! The impact was so great that my engine had shifted into the back of the hood! So he said he would call me in a pain GEL and mild muscle relaxer. Yeah, did NOT call in the muscle relaxer! So I call my PCP and insist that I want to go back and see my dr who has been treating me for over 4 years. That was 4 weeks ago and my insurance company doesn’t even have a referral request for the second doctor. I call my PCP again because I am about to be out of meds and she would only call in two weeks of one medication and not my muscle relaxer because Dr. Patel called in a muscle relaxer EVEN THOUGH I had not only contacted Dr. Patel but I also told Dr. Sunkara letting them know that was never called in!!! And OF COURSE she is going out of the country now. Are you kidding me!!! I’m filing a complaint with my insurance company. These people are hacks and need to get their $hit together!

My first experience with Emory Dunwoody was awful to say the least. After showing up early to my appointment and waiting in the «waiting» room for well passed my appointment time, then going back to see the Dr. and falling asleep waiting on her it took so long, then having her ask me if I had a problem because my attitude was sour. Oh I’m sorry, I’ve been waiting and fell asleep! I’d thought things got better my second visit, they’d moved and apparently made some other changes. I really liked my Dr. She took time on me and was very nice.
This third (annual physical) visit has proven they’re back to their old selves. I showed up 15 minutes early to fill out paper work and such. I stood at the desk (not a one person was standing around near me) waiting for the man behind it to pay attention to me. He just had his head down in his computer. He finally, after what felt like forever, acknowledged me and had me fill out a piece of paper. I sat down for about 10 – 15 minutes and was called up to the desk by a woman telling me that my Dr. had to cancel (oh thanks for letting me know) but that I could see Dr. Julie Johnson at 9:30 (30 minutes after my initial scheduled appointment). I was already there, I’d already taken the day off work, so I decided to take it. Then I was told that I had a $ 25 copay (to which my insurance provide told me a head of time that my type of appointment was preventative and I should have to pay nothing). I was annoyed but paid it.
Filled out some paper work and was called back by a nurse. She took my temp, height, weight all that good stuff and asked me a bunch of questions. She sent me off to have my blood drawn. Immediately I’m asked for my name and dob, to prove my identity. She was sweet. After my blood was drawn I met back up with the nurse and the nurse gave me a robe to change into and told me the Dr. would be back shortly for my pap. I changed and next thing I know it’s been passed 30 minutes.
At this point I’m getting annoyed and antsy. My time is precious too and I did have other things to do that day. I decided to get dressed and go looking for the nurse. Couldn’t find her. Went back to the room, was pacing, trying to make noise, maybe they forgot me, opened my door, but no one. I was seriously about to leave and decided to look for the nurse again. I found her and asked her when I was going to see the Dr. She told me that it would be just a few minutes longer the Dr. was finishing up. I said, well I’ve been waiting for over 30 minutes. I heard a person from behind the wall say, «If she wants to reschedule she can». I peaked my head to this person, it was the Dr., and said, «well when will I get to see you» and she told me I could reschedule but she’d been done with her other patients soon. She was on the computer, I can only assume she was filling out patient info into their system.
So now it’s either reschedule or wait?! I felt I’d made it this far so I went back to the room made a phone call and sat on the couch. She finally got back there, maybe 45 minutes after I’d been waiting. She did my pap, told me the front desk would schedule me for procedure clinic (I was interested in mirena to which she didn’t discuss with me at all) and that was that. She was gone within 5 minutes.
After all that my insurance provider is telling me I shouldn’t of had to pay at all and procedure codes are missing from my paper work so now I’ve been on the phone all day dealing with attitude from front desk clerks and billing. I’m switching my primary.

I needed a new family doctor and was excited to see Emory Family Medicine At Dunwoody located less than a mile from my new home. I called to set up a new patient appointment and was given an appointment for first thing in the morning at 8:30am. I arrived at 8:10 to fill out paper work. At 8:30 all the nurses came out and started calling patients. They didn’t call me. So I sat patiently and waited until 8:50 to be called back. I went through the standard blood pressure, temperature, etc things with the nurse and was told the doctor will be right in to see me. I sat waiting and then at 9:15 (45 minutes past my scheduled appointment time) the nurse came in to apologize to me and informed me that the Doctor had just called and said she was not coming into the office today. No one bothered to tell me before then that my doctor was not there and would not be coming in. They just stuck me in a room and had me wait. They were very apologetic and the nurse manager & front desk manager both came to speak with me and apologize. They said they could have another doctor come see me but I had already had an hour of my time wasted so I let them know I would be leaving and would not be returning to the Emory Family Medicine at Dunwoody again. Doctors need to realize that were are not just patients but we are customers! We have options and choice on who we give our and our insurances money too and we deserve courtesy and respect with the service they provide to us. It is unfortunate that this was my first and only experience with Emory Family Medicine at Dunwoody because I was excited about having a doctor so close by and assumed that by having the Emory name that they were a first class operation.
I can not comment on the quality of medical care at Emory Family Medicine at Dunwoody but the nurse that saw me was very nice and professional as was the gentleman at the front desk. I hope this is just an isolated mess up by them and not indicative of a pattern of incompetence.

Yes, you should expect to see students and residents here. In my experience that has been an advantage and not a weakness. I’ve always been seen right away (after 3 visits) and been treated kindly and with respect. I saw a doctor one time and a student did part of the exam; the other 2 times I saw a resident. He took my symptoms seriously and yes, he approved the treatment with the attending physician. I see that as an advantage. He had an incentive to do a good job and it was like having two doctors rather than one.
I had a lot of tests done at Emory Midtown and was treated well by very professional medical technicians. They ended up discovering a potentially life-​threatening condition that would have been missed if the doctor hadn’t taken me seriously. I will have surgery next week and when I visited the surgeon a student took down the initial information, but the surgeon came in and explained everything and is doing the surgery! (yes, I asked!) Students will watch, but how else will they learn?
I have had no problems with billing. It all gets sent to my insurance and everything so far has gone smoothly.

I just began using this facility, and have had no problems with them. Of course, I’ve learned my lesson over the years and schedule my appointments first thing in the morning. The first time I visited, I had a resident question me before the doctor came in. While I find this incredibly annoying, I also understand that I chose to use an Emory facility, and Emory is a MEDICAL SCHOOL. Duh. They don’t just stick you with an inexperienced medical student and then send you on your way. Imagine the lawsuits!
Anyway, my doctor is thorough, moreso than others I’ve used in the past elsewhere. I’ll continue to go to them.

While I have not been to this particular Emory facility, I have been to others, and the experiences related by Natalie are pervasive.
As an unfortunate kicker to this, I am an Emory ‘mid-​level’ (I hate that term!) provider — and I have had to ‘show out’ on occasion due to having an appt. and not being seen for over an hr, then put in a room and left to die! So even being on the ‘inside’ does not insulate one from the low-​level, don’t give a damn attitude that is rampant amongst the ancillary staff at Emory.
God forbid they screw up your bill — you’re toast. It has taken my having to use the internal directory to find the director of the billing area (I forget the exact name of the dept) in order to get a bill straightened out! Obviously, that is not an option available to everyone. That is insane.
When going to almost any Emory facility, be aware you will be seen by a full cast of characters, from med students to nursing students, to residents, fellows, and then finally the attending.
All the while, you are giving the same info each time the door opens. Finally, you are ‘presented’ to the attending. Listen closely to what is being said, b/​c this is what the attending is going to listen to.
Don’t forget, after the students/​residents/​etc. see you, they go and see the next patient, so your info could be mixed with info from the guy next door — it happens ALL the time.
God help you if you go back the next month, when a whole new crew is on. The attending may or may not remember you — try to do or say something that you can refer back to, this seems to help (even me) the attending to place you.
Emory is supposed to be a ‘world class’ healthcare organization, and it is — in the minds of the bureaucrats! I’ve been in meeting where I’m left wondering if we are talking about the same place! The good intentions don’t filter down to the front-​line workers. They may have them all dressing with their cute little shirts and ties, but they need more than that to keep me as a patient!

I’ve had two terrible experiences at Emory Family Medicine at Dunwoody, and will not be back! On the first visit, I arrived early, only to end up waiting an hour to see a physician. After waiting for more than 20 minutes, I let them know I had other appointments that afternoon that I needed to get to — they were not at all concerned about getting me out of there. They sent a med student in to talk to me, and had her take down all my symptoms — all the while promising me that the doctor would be in any minute. After another 40 minute wait, the doctor finally saw me and had me review all my symptoms AGAIN. If I had not been so sick, I would’ve walked out. Waiting an hour to see a doctor when you have a scheduled appointment that you are on time for is unacceptable.
Today, I went in to get a vaccine. I called several days prior to make sure they had the vaccine on hand. When I got there, they seemed very confused, and asked me why I had made an appointment with a doctor instead of a nurse (um, I don’t know, I just called to make the appointment). Then they told me that they didn’t have the vaccine available, then they told me they had it for medicaid patients. They went on to tell me that I had scheduled my appointment through the wrong channels (???). I am officially done with this place. Incompetence all around, every time, no exceptions. Please don’t waste your time — you will end up frustrated.

My wife went here for a simple shot, and the doctor persistently tried to have blood work done. Is it too much to ask for an office to not be so money hungry and simply do the work that is required.
I know we are in hard times, considering health care reform, but trying to squeeze the last dime out of your patients; it only makes them upset and looking for another office.
