The purpose of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel is to teach excellence, ethics, equality and engagement. It is to demonstrate the interdisciplinary foundations of a learned ecumenical Christian ministry for the world.

History

Established in 1978.

The Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel — the world’s most prominent religious memorial to Dr. King — is a unique, tangible metaphor of his World House concept. Dedicated for ecumenical Christian ministry February 18, 1978 by Ambassador Andrew Young, the Chapel is a multipurpose campus facility used for Morehouse College’s academic, cultural, community and spiritual programs and events as well as hosts people of diverse backgrounds from around the globe and of all ethnic, cultural and faith traditions. The Chapel building and plaza honor and celebrate and legacies of Dr. King, Morehouse College’s most well-​known alumnus, and Dr. Howard Thurman, Morehouse College’s most recognized interfaith new thought theologian. Dr. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr. is the first Dean of the Chapel.
