Last night I viewed Charlie Brown’s Grand Farewell Finale held at Backstreet in 2010 and could not believe what a total wreck I was watching it, tears streaming down my face, I’m serious, I found it a very moving experience. It took me back to 1979 and to a place called the Sweet Gum Head, I believe it was torn down to build the Marta subway, but it was where I laid eyes on Charlie Brown for the first time and was totally blown away, for me Charlie Brown came to define what drag was all about. In the Finale video, Charlie talked about going to Lake Tahoe to find work, which I just cannot imagine Charlie Brown not being in Atlanta, Charlie Brown has done a great deal for gay Atlanta.

And #500 goes to… America’s Ultimate Bitch, Mr. Charlie Brown. A drag legend and permanent part of Atlanta’s culture. I can still hear the theme music from Charlie Brown’s Cabaret at Backstreet playing as I type this review. Oh, those were the good ‘olé days. I love, love, love drag shows. I think that’s probably the gayest thing about me(well, aside from the fact that I like to kiss guys…). Charlie Brown is someone I seek out whenever there’s a show. She’s in her element when she’s directing and commanding attention from the audience. After Backstreet closed she opened Charlie Brown’s Cabaret at Underground. That was a VERY fun place and I was sad when it closed. Even though the Cabaret doesn’t perform together anymore you can still catch them around town and traveling across the country. She’s getting older, but still quick witted and knows how to work a room. I’ve gotten to know her better over the years and she’s actually one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Caring and sweet. Of course, that all changes when the curtain opens… the bitch comes out!

Mr. Charlie Brown used to be at Backstreet, which is now closed. He is one of the country’s finest entertainers. My trips to Atlanta are not complete until I see Charlie perform. He works a room like no one else I know. Great for all audiences, and types, unless you are ultra-conservative and uptight. Mr. Charlie Brown is truly an institution and well worth the trip and price, no matter where he performs.
