History

Established in 2004.

Tong Dojo Shotokan Karate carries on the proud tradition of the original Tong Dojo, founded by the late George Cofield in New York. 3rd Dan Richard Chapman established Atlanta’s Tong Dojo in Midtown. In 2009, the school moved into its spacious, 3,000-square-foot location at the intersection of Cheshire Bridge and Faulkner roads, where it continues operating today. Tong Dojo Shotokan Karate offers the finest in traditional martial arts training combined with a modern approach. Sensei Chapman has trained under some of the finest martial artists in Shotokan history, including Teruyaki Okazaki and the late Hidetaka Nishiyama. Sensei Chapman’s martial arts training began more than 40 years ago in the South Jersey Karate Club. He has founded karate clubs from coast to coast.

Sensei Richard Chapman has trained under some of the most renowned martial arts instructors in history. His training began more than 40 years ago at the South Jersey Karate Club. He has founded karate clubs across the nation, including New Jersey, Ohio and California. Over his career, Sensei Chapman has trained with such karate masters as Teruyaki Ozazaki and the late Hidetaka Nishiyama, who was a student of modern karate’s founder, Gichin Funakoshi. Richard Chapman’s American Karate in New Jersey featured more than 200 students.
