I love this park and its serenity. I enjoy watching flocks of birds and walking in the quiet woods. But… Keep your dog/s on a leash. Especially if there’s one of you and four of them, and they charge my dog who is on a leash.

Pothole-ridden Mason Mill has been driven on by me a million times, and I never knew this under wraps park existed. Only word-of-mouth(from a fellow Unilocaler, naturally) let us in on the secret. There isn’t any signage on Mason Mill Road, so turn onto Mason Woods Road and then make a right into the park. You can park either in the small lot straight ahead or turn right and park down a hill. W.D. Thomson Park has some tennis courts, a spot for shooting hoops, a baseball field of sorts, a playground, a stream, woodsy walking trails, and a covered picnic area that you can reserve. No bathrooms though. And the water fountains weren’t working when we were there. But other than that, a fantastic find!

W. D. Thomson Park(that’s right — the extra«p» you see in the heading is a common mispelling) is a beautiful, quiet corner of the woods of the North Georgia mountains, only moments from the hustle and bustle of Dekalb County. Tucked between residential neighborhoods and practically adjacent to Emory and the CDC, W. D. Thomson Park offers wooded trails and a stream-side picnic area, as well as a few amenities(playground, tennis courts and a grassy playing field). There is parking and a picnic shelter next to the playground, and additional parking next to the tennis areas. Recent efforts by the Friends of Thomson Park volunteer group has begun the process of removing thickets of privet and other invasives, and allowing native species to begin repopulating the trails and woods. Dogs are supposed to remain on a leash. No bathrooms.
