A local landmark at one of the busiest intersections in western Chicagoland, the bright orange U-​Haul sign floating above Rt 59 called me to safe harbour when I needed moving supplies for my move to Michigan. More than once I was steered towards dishpacks and specialty picture frame mailers in my search to protect my goods for a long haul and internment in a storage facility. Land pirates, ahoy, you can find your favourite containers for precious booty with little fuss.
And what if your booty has a strange shape or needs special care, be it super bubble wrap or an extra deep box? Fear not, U-​Haul provides. When I wasn’t certain about the necessary size for a framed print I needed to bundle, the manager told me to return with the packing if it proved much too large or insufficiently small. A welcome token gesture ensured further business for those pesky packing supplies that Craigslist’s free postings never seem to include in their cargo.
All seemed well, until…
Flash forward several months and I needed to rent a truck to liberate my precious cargo from a small warehouse at Extra Space Storage in town. I made arrangements via U-Haul’s website for pick up of a 14-​foot truck at U-​Haul Fox Valley, expecting that the vast supercentre would hold more vehicles than some pokey outlet somewhere south of Plainfield. Its proximity to the interstate and my storage facility was also desirable for me and 2,508 other families moving over the end of June.
Despite giving ample reservation time, U-​Haul sent out a battery of «wait to hear from your dealer» e-​mails and no further information about where, who, or what. A call to customer service on site here told me there was no record of my reservation being assigned, despite this being my preferred facility. I was advised to make a new reservation, pray to the rain gods, and sacrifice a goat to ensure I got what I needed. Okay, the last bit isn’t quite true, but U-​Haul corporate insisted I should wait for a call that never came before making any contact. Still no word for the rest of the week.
My pickup date was ⁶⁄₂₈. On 6/​27, somewhere around 7:30 PM, I received a little email informing me to pick up my 14′ truck at another facility altogether. When I went to that facility, they did not have the truck due to complete renter negligence (failure to return on time) and Fox Valley froze out all reservations, basically impeding our ability to arrange for something else. In short, «there’s nothing we can do» became the substitution for «I’m sorry.»
Just ducky. I pay for a truck of a specific size, and it’s not there. A larger truck is not available, nor was I offered or received anything for my inconvenience. After driving 5 hours and making arrangements to have family come load up the unit, I was more than a little cranky. Fox Valley did nothing to alleviate the frustration I felt. Customer service doesn’t rhyme with ‘call corporate.‘

* You can do much better at Home Depot a block down the road for tape guns, and the dollar store for tape refills.

* Spotty and dependent on who you see.

So much for the Super-​Hitch Center U-​Haul! Had a 9:30 appointment for a trailer hitch install. Arrived 9:20 and was told the car in front of me had not been started and needed another 45 minutes. However the mechanic that was doing the install was helping set up a rental trailer and seemed not to be working on the car in front of me. As I had to wait and there’s nothing to walk to around there I cancelled the appointment. I drove on hour round trip for this. I will have my local mechanic install the hitch as they are prompt and fair.

I’ve used this U-​Haul twice now, and have been happy. We used a van the first time, last march. And then a regular truck in September. The truck they gave me had an issue with the battery light coming on, so I took it back right away and they gave me a new truck at no charge. Then, at the end of the move, they gave me a mileage discount for the inconvenience. I’ll use this one again.
