A Man & His Tools Handyman serves North Austin, south as far as Braker Lane. I serve Pflugerville, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander and Hutto. I don’t serve Central or South Austin or Lakeway, Bee Caves or West Lake areas. I specialize in interior repairs for your home such as: ceiling fan installation, entry door replacement and repairs, appliance repair, sheet rock repairs, texture and painting, IKEA furniture assembly, small tile jobs. In fact I can repair or install or replace just about anything inside your home! If I can’t do it, I can find you someone who can! I also do some exterior repairs. History

Established in 2003.

I started this in 2003 while looking for a full time job in high tech. After a few months, a job presentrd itself. So AMAHTHS, went into hibernation for 5 or so years. In November of 2008, after a second layoff, this looked like the best way to keep from getting outsourced or laid off or working for total idiots. With a bachelors degree in Technology from Texas State, extensive college education in electronic circuits and A/​C and D/​C power, many years experience working as a machinist, and 19 years in high tech, this is where I landed and where I am thriving.

I am Don Whiteside, owner operator of AMAHTHS. I like to say «some are born to greatness and others have it thrust upon them.» My greatness was thrust upon me. (I hope William Shakespeare won’t mind some poetic license.) After 19 years in the Austin high tech industry and two layoffs, I decided that the stress was too high. My brother in law Bob said, «Hang a ladder on your truck and go fix things; I’ve never seen anything you can’t fix! And you will love being your own boss!» Well, it turns out there is a market for guys with my combination of skills, a passion for serving others, a good collection of tools, and a very understanding wife.

Since I started full time in this business in 2008, I have gained a loyal following and if you read this far, maybe you will consider becoming one as well.

I love living in this country where freedom rings loud and clear and you can reinvent yourself when you need to.

Don immediately replied to my initial call, explained his services and gave me a clear time estimate. He then had an earlier opening in his schedule, and we had no trouble coordinating a time to meet. He was punctual, did all the items on my list and gave me a heads up right before he was done so I could get back to work as soon as possible. I will definitely be doing business with him again!

Don has been amazingly helpful working through my long and overdue list of projects. I have had two appointments with him so far and on each occasion, he consistently met my expectations. He manages his time wisely and takes the time to thoroughly answer any questions prior to starting the clock.
He has converted and installed light fixtures, hung closet doors, installed a faucet, repaired a gate and a garden shed, and even fixed a switch plate on my front door that had loosened (without any mention of it by me). He takes pride in his work and ensures customer satisfaction. I am confident that he will complete my larger projects with the same effort and quality.
Don is definitely your go-​to guy for any project, big or small. I look forward to working with Don in the future and I highly recommend his services!

I found Don from Unilocal and contacted him to have two light features installed and fix fan lights in two rooms that are not working and install one three way dimmer switch. Don told me he was really booked out when I called but he was able to squeeze me in in one of the evening. He came and fixed the fan lights very quick but we got wrong dimmer switch and the bases for the light features don’t cover the holes. So he told me what to get and even offered to make a base for my dinner room chandelier with no charge. He came back on Saturday and install them all up very quick. And now they look great. It was pleasure working with Don, he is very funny and easy going. And at the reasonable price he charges he works really fast too. I will definitely reach out to him for the future projects and highly recommend him to my friends.

I have had 2 great experiences with Don and could not be happier with the work!
The first experience was a front door. I contacted Don about hanging a new front door that had to be customized to fit within an existing frame. I am a little handy but this was beyond my experience level! Not only did Don come out and give me a fair price, he helped me understand the work involved and did an amazing job. He put up with my dumb questions and is very friendly and patient.
Don did such a good job that we had to have him back to install recessed lighting in the kitchen. He put up with more of my dumb questions and did a great job of installing the recessed lighting and removing the existing fixture.
I highly recommend Don and his work. He is a great guy, reasonably priced and produces excellent results.
This review will need to be updated because my wife and I are figuring out the next project we are giving to Don!

I set and appointment for Don to replace my broken built-​in microwave with my new microwave. He is very friendly and straight forward. He did the work (looks great), cleaned –up his mess, and charged what he said he would. I’m happy and will call him again.

We have an exterior door in our garage that needed to be reset (hinge replacement), as it would not open/​close properly. Also had a wobbly toilet that needed a new seal at the floor. Don did an excellent job of fixing these two issues. We were very pleased with his professional manner and his quality work. Will definitely call on Don again.

If you’re on Unilocal searching for repair/​handyman services right now, Mr. Don is exactly who you’re looking for. I first called him to help knock out a list of make ready repairs right before my house went on the market: the garage door opener, attic stairs, smoke alarms, dryer hook-​up, clinking ceiling fan, hooked-​up the stove… and the dishwasher. I thought the dishwasher just needed hooking up, but turns out it was dying. Don spent a lot of time trying to fix it and calling around for parts. He gave an estimate and an honest assessment about fixing or replacing it. We have used Don two more times and I have even driven my broken kitchen drawer to north Austin to leave it with Don. He’s a great guy, super talented, and loves what he does. Definitely one of Austin’s best contractors.

I have been using Don for a few years now and as the saying goes… If it isn’t broken then don’t fix it!!! Don is the ultimate professional and has done a great job in getting the jobs I have requested in a quick and timely manner. He is also a cool laid back individual and makes time to make conversation and also gives tips to the homeowner to maintain the integrity of the home. Don has also talked me through a process to save me $$ from him having to do it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND his services for home repair and the cost is very reasonable.

100% Satisfaction every time. I’ve used Don 3 times over the last year or so and he never disappoints. His skills, brains, integrity and pleasant manner make him a pleasure to have around. You’ll know what I mean within minutes of meeting him. I should note, he is too busy to take every job that is offered to him. He always gets multiple calls while he’s at my house and I hear him referring out business. But you should certainly try to get him scheduled if you need a job done. He’s a rare find.

I’ve heard many horrible stories about getting ripped off on handyman services…
If you shop around then you will know that Don’s rate $ 65/​an hour isn’t bad at all.
I met Don today to cut and re install one of our door today and I was able to just let him do his job while I was preparing dinner.
Don will have your job done CORRECTLY and you can trust that he will be reasonable with pricing.
I will be calling Don back in 3 weeks to install water filter on my sink.

I can’t find enough good things to say about Don. We have used his services twice so far, and both times he was professional, polite, and did an excellent job assembling our furniture. He put together a desk, media stand, and a dresser… and the dresser had a TON of small parts and drawers. He even came out to our house in questionable weather, and he did a fantastic job. We will definitely be using Don again!

I called few weeks ago to get bunch of things fixed up at my house that has been bugging me for a while now. They were a little small tasks that I just haven’t had the chance to take care of so I hired this man and he did a wonderful job and everything. He is very nice and professional I would hire him again if I ever need some small tasks done but I’m sure he could do a great job on big jobs as well.

I had a mixed experience with Don.
He was very friendly, upfront with his pricing, and did a GREAT job installing some light fixtures in my apartment. :)
The cons of this experience were that I very clearly outlined all the work that needed to be done. (Light fixtures, assembling and hanging a floating media cabinet, and another small thing).
I explained to Don that the media cabinet was probably a beast if a job and was probably the most important project. Don hung all my lights and did a great job adjusting them exactly how I wanted. Unfortunately he said he ran out of time to do anything else and had other jobs to do.
This really upset me because I had no way to assemble or hang the media center on my own (I’m 5 ft tall recovering from spinal injuries). My Dad and his friend had to fly down to help me move and it put us way behind schedule to figure out how to do this on our own and it was a NIGHTMARE.
I feel that my experience with Don would have been great if he had properly managed his time. At the very least he could have warned me at the beginning of his job, not at the very end of hanging the light fixtures suddenly informing me he needs a check so he can leave for another job. :(
On top of that when I forgot to sign the check, he was a little too aggressive about meeting me immediately so I can sign it. On one hand I understand this because I’m sure there have been dishonest people in the past that have tried to screw him, but my Dad and I were very kind to him and this really put us off.
Maybe he was having a bad day. I would not discourage you from hiring Don again because at least he did a good job on what he managed to finish, but I would caution you to be very thorough about the time-​line expectations and have a written agreement.

I was very unhappy with my experience with Don for 3 reasons.
1. There are major issues with the design of the stair railing he built. The rail is so low, my 1.5-yr-old son holds the top as he walks down the stairs, and it’s impossible for a taller person to hold onto the top of the rail comfortably because it’s so low. Also, he made various sloppy choices in the rail construction that make it uneven and unattractive. We’re just going to tear it down and chalk it up to a $ 300 mistake.
2. When Don originally came by to quote, he said he was $ 55/​hr, but when he was done and we were settling up the bill, he said his hourly was $ 65. I said I had it in my notes that he was $ 55/​hr, but he insisted it wasn’t. I called my mom, who kept her own notes during his initial visit, and she had independently also written down $ 55/​hr. If he bumped up his rate, he should have acknowledged it and not pretended I was wrong.
3. But here’s what makes my blood still boil: He left my side gate WIDE OPEN when he left, although there were three dogs and a toddler roaming around. The next morning, I couldn’t find one of my dogs. I heard scratching at the front door, and there she was, on the side of the house by a road!

We needed someone to replace our rotted-​out back door. Becuase it’s not a huge job, every company or handyman we contacted would not take the job. Luckily we were able to find Don. He did a great job replacing and installing the new door. He took a lot of care into painting the trim to match, adjusting the deadbolt to make it more sturdy, and he did a great job of cleaning up once everything was finished. His rates are very reasonable and he’s a very reliable handyman. We’ll definitely use him in the future!

Service, experience, courtesy and excellent work! I needed a light put over my kitchen sink… it was a very difficult job… Don figured a way to do it, I am so pleased. While at my house I needed help putting «tin squares» on my kitchen ceiling… he did that and went to Home Depot to get quarter round to totally finish it off. Excellent work, excellent human being!

Don is the man! I have used his services quite a few times now and every time it is nothing but stellar. If you need a handyman, Don is your guy. He can do some pretty complicated things too but if it’s not something he can achieve perfection on he will shoot you straight and point you in the right direction. Just give him a call and the moment you speak with him you will see that he is a great guy.
