Andre Chen, MD

This man is a disgrace to the medical profession he calls himself a part of. His additional certifications as an addiction specialist should be revoked as he doesn’t even know why he’s treating most of his patients with suboxone therapy. He uses it as a tool to control people once he has them hooked and knows they can’t get help anywhere else. He displays the most disgusting abuse of power I’ve seen in my 30 years and I would highly highly recommend never seeing him if it has anything to do with opiates for pain or anything they actually want a doctor to listen and care about. He doesn’t know or care about his patients all he cares about is getting out at noon and getting a paycheck.

I love Dr Andre Chen, a San Francisco transplant who is a great family practice doc. He’s smart, insightful, and understands that people have busy lives. He asks all the right questions, and wants to understand how the medical issue is affected by lifestyle. I appreciate his candor and thorough explanations, and in my experience, his diagnoses are spot on, and when I follow his advice I get and feel better. I trust DR Chen totally. There is an oddball aspect to his personality and demeanor, which i find charming– science geeks are like that, right?

He was horrible. I came with a UTI and he was incredibly condescending and rude. Based on my story and nothing elsehe said I had a UTI. I asked what if its something else. He got defensive. I will never go back to dr. Chen again.

I liked Dr. Chen personally but he failed me on two occasions:
Once when I asked if I as a male was testable for hpv he confirmed my belief that there was no test and asked why I cared to know since it is essentially non-​harmful to males. WTF do you think I want to know?! Because I care about the people with whom I have sex!
The second time was when I had mono as an adult. It’s rare, yes, but the symptoms matched and mono as a possibile diagnosis even came up in conversation. To be fair, the symptoms are similar to a typical infection — the difference being that my symptoms had been mild and long-​lasting which is typical for mono. He did not order a mono spot which is a quick, easy, cheap, reliable test for mono and instead prescribed antibiotics which on the label said they were counter-​indicated for mono (could cause a bad rash). A couple days later I went to a different doc who suspected mono, did the test, and confirmed it.
I will not go back to Dr.Chen.

Made a 2:30 appt. Arrived at 2:10. Filled out a brief form, went to the restroom and before I made it back to the lobby she called me, then took my blood pressure. Dr came in a minute later, checked me out, sent me down to first floor to have my blood taken. After all that, I left at 2:26, 4 minutes before my appt. What Drs office is ever this efficient?

First off, he is blunt and to the point. If you want a quick appointment and someone to not sugar-​coat things for you, he’s the guy to see. However, he is VERY rude and has ZERO bedside manner. I told him I wanted blood testing for arthritis because of the severe pain I have been experiencing durning the weather, and he told me it would come back to haut me if I try to get insurance later (I already have it, btw) and that because of my age (31), that it really wasn’t needed. He seemed more in a rush to get me out of there than to actually HELP me. I can understand being up-​front with someone, but his tone and attitude were completely uncalled for!!!

This was the worst physical exam I have ever received.
1. I came for a routine check-​up, and none of my vitals were checked nor was I asked if I needed any refills on my medications. It was a 10 minute appointment if that, and I could have felt better about my health by perusing WebMD!
2. I metioned that I was experiencing shooting pains in my chest and that it was becoming quite detrimental to everyday activities. Certain movements caused me to freeze in pain, and I would struggle to breath, talk, and even move. I literally had to lie down and wait for it to pass. I couldn’t figure out what was causing this to happen on my own and was looking for a doctor’s advice. Dr. Chen took out his iPad to calculate my risk for heart disease and stated that at my age my risk was so minimal it was surely nothing. I’m sorry, but if I am telling you that I am experiencing pain in the area of my heart on a regular basis, more thought should go into it then entering calcuations into an iPad app.
3. After I kept probing the situation looking for answers, he threw me some prilosec and said that would cure the problem and again told me it was nothing. After taking these pills for 2 months, the pains were not going away. I later learned that I had costochondritis, which was an area Dr. Chen never explored nor even thought of. I had been taking Prilosec for no reason for 2 months and it didn’t even fix the problem!
4. Dr. Chen then charged me as a new patient, thus resulting in my insurance carrier not covering the visit even though I had been to several doctor’s within Austin Diagnostic Clinic. I had also made it clear that I had made the appointment as a yearly physical exam, and my other doctor was unavailable for the dates I was available for a visit.
5. If something had been serioulsy wrong with me, I would not have known, because Dr. Chen did not ask any questions as to why I was having chest pains or try to resolve the matter. He brushed it off by saying I was an active 25 year old female and it wasn’t anything. I was then left to research the problem on my own and figure out what was happening and determine how I was going to fix it. Frankly, Dr. Chen did nothing to assure me that I was in healthy condition, which is the whole purpose of a physical exam. I am glad I was pumping medicine into my system for 2 months that my body did not need.

Dr. Chen was impersonal and didn’t really listen to what was wrong. It didn’t seem like he cared. He prescribed pain medication for a allergy related cough.

I think Dr. Chen is a wonderful physician. I randomly found him under our insurance plan when we first moved here two years ago. I thought I would check out a few different doctors but was so pleased with Dr. Chen that I stuck with him.
Things I love
1. I can almost always get an appointment with him the same day I call
2. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see him. I’ve even had the nurse calling my name as I was signing my credit card receipt for my copayment. I would like to say that there was one time what I wasn’t able to see Dr. Chen and I was extremely sick so I made appointment with another doctor in the same office. I waited 45 minutes to see him. It reminded me of my doctors visits back in West Texas. Shoot me!
3. He always says just enough. He isn’t overly wordy and doesn’t blow smoke up your ass, but he gets across to you what needs to be said. This being said, my appointments are short but I never walk out feeling rushed. He takes time to explain things and will even talk to you about issues that are different than what you came in for.
4. His staff is always friendly and efficient.
So if you are looking for a great doctor’s experience, I would definitely recommend Dr. Chen!

I wish I read the negative reviews before accepting an appointment with him. I was sick and my regular doctor at ADC was fully booked for the day so they checked Chen’s schedule. Apparently he had several slots availabilities. I kind of felt that’s not a good sign but decided to give it a try. I thought «how bad could it be». Well it was quite a waste of my time and my experience explained why nobody wanted to see him. He showed no interests in my health issues and did little for diagnostic purpose. He was condescending while talking to me and behaved as if my questions and requests were a bother to him. My visit ended quickly without me learning anything new about my conditions.
He did give me a couple of prescriptions, the purpose of which is to make me go away I suspect. One of them I had to ask him for because I wanted something to manage the symptoms. Here is the icing of the cake, I tried to fill this prescription up and the pharmacist couldn’t read his handwritings! How many times you think that happens? I have filled several prescriptions from various doctors with this pharmacist, and I have never had this problem before. That’s it! I am done with this doctor once and for all. I don’t trust him and don’t want to ever see him again.

He is an awful man. I just moved to Austin and needed to get established with a primary care doctor. I have fibromyalgia and needed refills for my medication and just a general check up. The appointment basically turned into a lecture. What I got from that lecture was that he did not believe that fibromyalgia existed and was against treating it. (By the way, I use a combo of cymbalta and neurontin to treat it. Both of which are non-​narcotics). He was also completely against me using a sleep aid, even though a lack of quality sleep triggers my flare-​ups. He went on to say that the sleep aid would destroy my memory making abilities. I asked for advise on an alternative and what to do about my inability to stay asleep. He replied, «I don’t know.» In short, this doctor was rude, demeaning, and very unhelpful. It was a waste of my time and money.

Dr. Chen is reliable even when you wake up sick and need a same-​day appointment. My husband and I have gone to him when we had a bout of bronchitis, and also when Nick had a freaky incident involving getting nuclear-​hot wing sauce in his eye and had half his face swell up, a la Elephant Man. Then another time, when Nick had a hardcore bicycle crash, Dr. Chen was the one who checked out his concussion and declared him ready to drive/​work again.
We found him randomly on our insurance website, but we found a real gem. He’s caring without going overboard, thorough without over-​diagnosing. The best part about him is that he never makes you wait. You don’t sit waiting in the lobby or exam room. He’s really punctual and you’re in and out quickly. My family has been very happy with him!
