The Assistance League of Austin Thrift House is a resale department store, staffed and administered entirely by volunteers.

The store is open year round and serves as a major source of income for Assistance League of Austin’s philanthropic programs. The Austin community donates new and gently-​used items — tools, office equipment, clothing, toys, furniture, household items, books, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, and much much more. Thrift House revenues exceeded $ 600,000 last year.

The Thrift House is happy to resell items you no longer need. We accept almost everything. Someone else will be delighted to purchase your donations and put them to good use. Lighten up your life!

When ensure that all items we sell meet certain level of standards. We do not sell badly damaged or soiled items, mattresses, or sleeper sofas.

Our dedicated team of over 400 followers is proud to serve over 25,000 members of this great community, putting caring and commitment in action!

History

Established in 1973.

Founded in 1973, Assistance League of Austin is one of over 120 National Assistance League® (NAL) philanthropic, nonprofit, nonsectarian organizations of volunteers helping those less fortunate across the United States. The chapters are linked through membership to National Assistance League and guided by its bylaws. This network of support to chapter members helps them provide effective philanthropic programs designed to meet specific needs in their communities. Each chapter is autonomous and funds raised are retained for its services within the local community.

Assistance League of Austin is an all-​volunteer chapter of National Assistance League. This chapter has been serving the Austin community by providing new clothes for school children in need and giving sick children a new toy and book 3 times a week at Dell Children’s Medical Center. Our programs are supported by the Thrift House. Your donations are welcome. Grant funds also help fund our programs.

Manager

Donna S. is in charge of public relations at the Assistance League of Austin. She embodies all of the key values of the Assistance League: Commitment, Leadership, Ethics, Accountability, and Respect.

She originally joined to work with the League after several of her friends highly recommended it. She left a previous job, and was recruited to work with us. Donna has since fallen in love with the Assistance League of Austin and is deeply passionate about all the work they do. She’s proud to be a part of this organization, and is thrilled to work in this fine community.

Great thrift store close to my home! There always seems to be a nice selection of things to browse through: books, furniture, wall art, kids’ stuff, kitchen ware, clothes. New stock is updated every Wednesday, the first day of the week they are open. Everything is arranged with care, and the lovely ladies there are always happy to answer questions. This week they are featuring a Hallowe’en theme, with costumes and scary decorations.
Yes, I do find that some things are overpriced. However, if items are on the floor too long and do not sell, they tend to be marked down. And then you can really find a bargain.
I try to stop by once a week for a quick look. My last visit resulted in a fantastic find: two mint condition Jake Bryer photo wall art pieces for $ 7 each. Yowza!

I love the Assistance League. Yes, some of their prices are a little too high, but they have some nice things at great prices also. Today I bought a pair of leather pants for $ 20, a brand new Ann Taylor shirt for $ 8, and an awesome no light Christmas candle for $ 1. Those are great prices. I notice some of their glassware and silverplate is high (considering I do estate sales for a living), but it’s all for a good cause and in great shape. It is nowhere near prices at antique stores, so their are ok in my book.
The staff at the Assistance League are just plain awesome. They are friendly and work really hard (volunteer) to get the items in tip top shape and well organized.
I love thrift shopping, and this is honestly one of my favorite shops in Austin.

I agree with other reviewers that this place is WAY overpriced (thus, likely out of touch). I’ve no doubt that they do great work for the community, but if they want the community to buy their goods so it can support itself, they would do well to lower their prices. Super clean inside and very sweet employees, but ultimately your average thrift shopper is not a hipster, it’s someone thrifting out of economic necessity. If I’m shopping for nice clothes for a job interview out of economic necessity, I care less about the niceness of the store and friendliness of the employees than I do about the price of the goods. It does not show goodwill or a spirit of mutuality to expect poor folks to cough up 15 dollars for a used shirt. People would do just as well to head on over to the Goodwill Blue Hanger Outlet, where they can get a cartful of brand name, gently used clothing for 15 dollars. Or people might do even better to attend a Really Really Free Market on the last Sunday of the month at Chestnut park. The prices at this store, put into context, strike me as somewhat insane.

So many bargains in the thrift house and the profit all goes back into our community. Wednesday morning at 10am there is a line waiting to enter. Shop only open for business thru Saturday.

I finally made it to the store it was open. I have tried several times to catch this place open and I just never could seem to do it until today. Let me tell you, I was severely disappointed. It is a super clean super nice store and the employees are friendly and helpful. But… The prices are out of this world expensive! I could buy clothes brand new at their prices. Not my cup of tea

Donation Review: The Assistance League team (volunteers and employees) make donating easy and go above and beyond to make donating a positive experience for kids. (adults too…)
Our family made a commitment to do 30 days of giving in preparation for Christmas. One of our challenges is to give in some form every day (skip boring details) — but part of that has been donating items we no longer use.
We have been faithfully showing up at the AL loading dock with something every day, and the AL team have been great sports. They receive the items with good spirit, and have been generous and patient explaining how the donations will help them do good in words a 4 year old can understand.
Even the day the kid decided to donate a pinecone. But the rest of the days, we have shocked ourselves at the number of items we have hanging around that are perfectly usable and gathering dust.
(and we have had to have a «race t-​shirt» intervention. Time for them to go, by now we know that I am never going to make that cool tshirt quilt that I saw on Pinterest!)
The result? Our little guy scavenges through the house nighly challenging us to come up with more to donate.
Thank you AL! Thank you AL Volunteers — you are so awesome, and thank you for all the work you do for Austin!
Looking forward to being a shopper when we ge to the «other side» of our giving experiment.

Pretty nifty thrift store, the old school kind where you can still find treasures on the cheap, not the vintage/​retro/​antique kind of store where they know the value of every item and create artsy displays with them.
I found prices to be very reasonable on most items and downright cheap on many, too. There’s a fair clothing selection, but also a good size selection of housewares, furniture, and a smaller electronics selection. The store is also well organized and stepping foot inside it does not immediately give me an anxiety attack (looking at you, Out of the Past Collectibles). The parking situation is a little hairy and you may have to jockey for a spot or wait a few minutes for a spot to open up, but this is a nice find that’s worth seeking out!

I love this place… Sure some stuff is overpriced, probably because they don’t know any better. But I’ve also found some pretty darn good prices here as well.
Although I’ve always been reluctant to share this place with others (when bragging about my finds, I usually just say «I went to my place today and found… for only!!!»), they deserve the credit.

No problem with the LOLs (little old ladies), it’s just that they are out of touch with pricing on hard goods. From my thrifting perspective, stuff was overpriced.
Many thrift stores these days are seeing the value in their vintage goods, but they are not providing the value by offering items that are priced and selected appropriately. LOLs don’t know the difference between trash and treasure, so they price everything as a treasure. Granted, the prices are still cheap compared to the mall.
I live around the corner, and I won’t be back much. Too low yield. For you clothes shoppers, it may work better. Since I don’t need more clothes, I’ll pass.

This is a great find! I try to go early on Wednesdays, and I have found some really nice clothes, new tags and all, as well as books, games, and the occasional houseware. They frequently have some lovely furniture and interesting jewelry, but so far I haven’t been in the market for either. The ladies who work here are lovely — friendly, helpful, and willing to help you find things. Parking can get tricky on Wednesday mornings, and for a great reason. It’s worth circling the block for.

I’m not much of a shopper in general. I’m especially not much of a thrift shopper. But I have to give this place 5 stars based on what happened for me there, which was one of the defining fashion moments of my life.
Let me ‘splain. I am a fashion extremist by the standards of many. I am an old, witchy Goth who is irritated by trends and has no problem wearing a homemade rabbit pelt cape over an All Saints dress over a pair of running tights and calling it a day. My fashion icons were, and still are, women like Grace Jones and Emma Peel’s character, outrageous, definitely female, women unafraid to try just about anything to see what happened. You get the idea.
Anyway, I was looking for long black skirts (an old witchy Goth has to have her staples). On the very limited skirt rack of the Assistance League of Austin there was one black skirt that was long enough for long legged, tall moi.
It was made of leather.
It had 200 snaps down the front that you must navigate in order to wear it.
It fit me like it was made for me.
It was $ 8.
The designer? Ann Demeulemeester.
I know a fashion moment like this will never, ever happen again in my entire life.

I Love to go in here, I always come out of there with different and out of this world things, Yesterday I found a 1965 iron on pocket. Did I need it? No it was 25 cents and other things that i just could not live with out..

I always manage to find things I want AND need here. I went to the UT game on Saturday and I stopped by AL KNOWING that they would have stadium seats. I’m recovering from a hip injury, and sitting in bleachers without cushioning was out of the question. I snagged a stadium seat for 5 $ (there were more, too) and was courteously checked out by a sweet older lady. In the past, I’ve found nice sweaters, hanging art and dishes here, all very reasonably priced. They do have shorter-​than-​most hours, though, so make sure they’re open before you swing by.
