Austin Fine Art Classes offers a clear concise step-​by-​step approach to learning the basics of drawing and painting. New «right-​brain» techniques reveal the secrets of the old masters. Learn to see and appreciate the world in a «whole» new way. From this solid foundation you can go in any direction with confidence and certainty, from classical realism to loss free style of the impressionists or anywhere in between. Start any time, go at your own pace, superb one-​on-​one instruction, create your own schedule, progress in every class, weekly and weekend classes.

History

Established in 1986.

Elizabeth Locke has been teaching people to draw and paint beautifully in Austin for over 24 years in Austin Texas. In 2001 after taking a group of her students to France for a summer of painting the french countryside and the gardens of Monet’s in Giverny, she started showing her work and gaining national recognition from collectors, was featured in SouthWestArt Magazine and interviewed for a spot on LifeTime TV. She was one of the «in house artists» at Greenhouse Gallery for the past six years.

She now offers weekly classes here in Austin at her studio for anyone interested in learning the language of visual communication and anyone interested in acquiring and or building their art making skills. Beginners are welcome!

Elizabeth was invited to attend Chounard in Los Angeles in the early sixties while still in high school. After two years there, she traveled to London to attend Heatherly School of Art returning in 1969 to attend Arts Students League in New York. Since then she has studied with some of the most renowned artist of our day ~ Helen Van Wyk, Daniel Greene, Michael Lynch, Ron Hicks to name a few. From all this training, and from the 10 years experience teaching hundreds of people to draw and paint beautifully she has developed an approach to teaching art that is clear concise and gets the results people really want.“It’s a lot like learning a language” Eli explains. «Art is a visual language. I teach how to see and communicate visually using the elements of line, tone, color, and texture. From this solid foundation students can go in any direction with confidence and certainty ~ from classical realism to the loose free style of the impressionists or anywhere in between.»

Would highly recommend Elizabeth’s classes. She has an excellent class progression. Takes you back to drawing 101 but with a new perspective. I like the way her classes are structured and she is a good teacher. Let’s you progress at your own pace. She is able to pull out your best. If you are serious about learning how to paint with oils in an impressionist style, she would be an excellent choice.

Finding Elizabeth and Austin Fine Art Classes was one of the BEST things I have discovered in a very long time! I have taken up my love of painting again after many years and found that I was missing some essential elements in my paintings and drawings. Elizabeth has helped me find these missing elements and I couldn’t be more satisfied. So many «Aha moments»! Classes are held in her wonderful quiet and serene studio that allows you to immerse yourself in your work – no distractions. Elizabeth’s guidance is meaningful, honest and nurturing. She clearly loves what she does – an immense talent. Like other reviewers have said, you will be hooked once you attend your first class. We begin with charcoal drawing and move to understanding tone in charcoal drawing. The experience then takes you to applying tone techniques in brown and white oil paint, and finally to experiencing oil color painting while applying all elements she has taught you (she does offer human form classes as well). You may take as many classes (blocks of classes) as you like, but taking them in the sequence she suggests is immensely helpful. I have attended 8 classes so far, and I honestly can’t wait for each class. I found through Austin Fine Art Classes EXACTLY what I was looking for! I am so happy I found her website and made the decision to hone my skills – too bad I didn’t do this earlier! Thank you Elizabeth! As you tell us in class, I am seeing and experiencing «the whole» in a new light everyday!

Elizabeth’s classes provide an opportunity for each of only 4 – 5 class members to have individualized instruction. There is a well-​planned, well-​written and structured curriculum that allows each person to progress at his/​her own pace. There is no waiting around for help. On top of personalized and sensitive reviews throughout the time in class –(that are wildly competent and encouraging) — one also hears the principles and processes reworded and clarified repeatedly to other students. This art school, unlike day workshops, or even college art courses I had had, uses a disciplined process that a serious artist or beginner has probably never experienced before. My feeling is that I am finally learning how to be in control of classical tools, materials and can finally see my way to gaining authoritative implementation of what I would like to express. I am so satisfied to proceed at this pace and love the work. The three hour class flies by.

Elizabeth has a very thorough method for teaching the basics from A to Z. It is well thought out and suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience but who have gaps in their experience or need a refresher. Students who complete her course will have a solid foundation for building their own works no matter what subject matter/​media they choose to explore. The studio space is well organized and pleasant.

Austin Art Classes are the only way to learn how to draw and paint creatively. She teaches her students at their own pace and with hands on step by step instructions. Elizabeth Locke is a teacher that is one in a million art teachers. I have been an artist and studied art my entire life. I make a living at commercial art and illustration. But I’ve been wanting to learn how to paint in this way and didn’t know this technique (to learn) existed. She is amazing in every way. She knows how to zone in to each student and see exactly what you need to do to get the lesson. If you are wanting to learn how to paint, don’t miss out on this rich way to learn.

Elizabeth is a unique teacher in that she teaches art in a very systematic and logical manner. You learn about line, tonality, and color as a unified whole and art is approached in the same way that the Old Masters approached art. I found Elizabeth by googling «Art Classes in Austin TX.» At the time I was considering trying out Laguna Gloria, but was a little intimidated by the potential size of the classes there and wasn’t thrilled about it being so far from my house. As it turns out, all of these years I have been living 5 minutes away from the best art teacher I have ever had. In all my years of art education and drawing on my own, I have never been taught some of the things that I have learned from Elizabeth – some of them in my very first class. And I wish that I had known before what I know now, because it would have made painting and drawing so much easier.
The small class size really makes it like having a one-​on-​one instructor. You move at your own pace. There are no more than five students at one time, each at different stages of artistic development, and Elizabeth goes around the room giving individual demonstrations and instruction. Each student starts with line drawing and progresses to tone drawing. Once those are mastered they will move on to tone painting (with white and brown paint) and finally after mastering tone painting, colors are introduced. The order is really important, so even if you have painted before you should start at the beginning. You won’t be sorry.
If you are on the fence, she offers a free one hour «mini class», which is risk free (almost risk free, because if you go, you will be hooked and want to sign up for more). But you will also learn very quickly that money here is well spent because Elizabeth has a way of explaining things that just makes sense.

I was looking to develop my skills as an artist as I have always enjoyed painting but had no formal training. I have been going to classes for a couple months now and feel I’ve learned so much and I absolutely love going to class! Ms. Locke has a warm sense about her & she is very good at teaching the techiques all artist yearn to improve. I highly recommend her!
