History

Established in 1993.

The owner, Leonard Fehrle, has been working on cars for as long as he can remember. After starting off in many small shops, he began working for Joe White’s Performance when he was only 16 years old. In 1993, Leonard purchased the property and established Auto Tek, Inc. Today, we have grown into an Austin staple known for providing excellent repair service. Our family run operation takes pride in providing great customer service for the Austin community.

Leonard is ASE certified as a Master Technician, Advanced Level Specialist, Undercar Specialist, Parts Specialist, Engine Machinist and Service Consultant. Further, Auto Tek, Inc. is part of many associations including the American Automobile Assosation, Better Business Bureau, Automotive Service Association and Texas Independent Automobile Association. Many customers have joined the growing Auto Tek family over the years, and we hope you’ll be the next.

Hello, my name is Aaron and I am the Service Manager at Auto Tek, Inc. I have been working with cars since I was only 15 years old and have been at Auto Tek, Inc. since November of 2002. My dad, Leonard, the owner, has been in this business for a long time. He wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer, but I wanted to work with him every day. That aside, working with the public is something I have always enjoyed.

When you come in for service, I want to make sure that your visit is as comfortable as it can possibly be. The secret to Auto Tek’s success lies in our highly trained and motivated staff. A broken car is definitely not a bright point in anyone’s day, but with our elite staff, we’ll make sure that you get taken care of. I guess I should start by explaining that this is a first for me. I NEVER give five stars. Mostly, I carp and complain on Unilocal.So, keep that in mind when you read this review.
We own a 96 Honda Oddessy that we love, because it’s the size of what passes for a small car these days, but seats 7 in comfort. And you can park it! There’s NOTHING on the market these days that’s even close. But it is 20 years old.
One morning a few weeks ago, it wouldn’t start. We had it towed to Auto Tek where they diagnosed the problem as a relay in the fuel injection, but what killed the relay? Most mechanics would have just replaced the relay, that’ll be a hunert bucks, thankyousir. Auto Tek kept on digging until they found the issue, they thought; the ignition switch was completely worn out.
A new relay, a new ignition switch, and the car runs like new again. For several weeks. Until last Friday when it wouldn’t start in the morning again. (A car that only quits when it’s in the driveway? This is a keeper!)
Another tow to Auto Tek and another relay. But they weren’t satisfied again. The technician kept digging. He pulled the FI ‘computer’, and found a dangling capacitor. We need a new computer. And you can’t buy them anymore. Auto Tek started trying to find me a used one, but I just happen to know a guy who owns a business repairing wafer fab equipment. I took the computer to him, his tech replaced every cap on the board, and the car runs again.
I have NEVER had a mechanic dig all the way down to the board level chasing a fault. «You need a new computer» is the standard. And if you can’t buy one, «you need a new car». This is exceptional service. Service that deserves five stars.

They have done maintenance on my baby girl with integrity, excellence, great customer service and most importantly affordability. When they can’t help me with a problem, like a broken window, they give me referrals so I’m not left without a solution. I’m always more than pleased when leaving there.

AutoTek is the place to take your vehicle. These 10 gentlemen really know what they are doing! I’m not taking my car anywhere else as long as I am in Austin. This family business really knows how to care for the cars and the people. I’m never left waiting long in line or on the phone. They answer all my questions and really break it down when I don’t understand. Every penny is worth it because I know they are looking out for me and my ancient car. Thank you AutoTek!

I had a great experience with Auto Tek. Aaron was very friendly and knowledgeable and not afraid to use the latest technology to communicate. I was kept up to date on the diagnosis and repairs and the total cost was approximately $ 200 less than the competition. Auto Tek is a professional, well run business.

Incredible diagnosticians. Truly. These guys are hands down the wizard internal medicine doctors of the auto industry here in Austin. Case in point: Last spring my son was driving our beloved but aging luxury SUV from Dallas to Austin. Suddenly the check engine light came on, a bunch of other lights popped on, there was a faint smokey smell and the car started shaking. Yikes! Very scary. When we got the car to Austin we took it immediately to the dealership where we were given a 9 page report and told it would cost $ 5+K to get our car running again! Fortunately, we decided to get a second opinion at Auto Tek before we put Bessie to rest.
After a careful inspection, Auto Tek came back with something that wasn’t even in the 9 page report!!! They said the problem originated from some arcing in the ignition coil (the smokey smell) and once that got out of whack the car began to have trouble and starting throwing out all sorts of codes.
Their solution? A new ignition coil. Cost? Less than$ 200
Are these guys cheap? No. I’ve found them to be mostly mid range in price. They are just EXTREMELY GOOD at what they do which is figuring out what’s wrong with your car and fixing it.
In our case, we said, «hallelujah replace the ignition coil!» When they took the coil out, they discovered there was really no need for a new coil… just one bad cylinder (I may not have all these part names right).
Final cost to get our car running again? Less than $ 100!
Needless to say these guys are my car heroes.
Since it took me so long, I can provide an update and say that 8 months later, Bessie is going strong at 205,000 miles. Auto Tek says she needs about $ 1900 in Maintance work now to stay strong and safe. Still way under $ 5k. Amazing.

I brought my Jeep Liberty in to Auto Tek based on Unilocal reviews and was not disappointed. I needed to get an oil change, and I requested a mini tune up and for them to check out an issue I had starting my car on a couple occasions.
I needed my car after 4pm so they broke up my service over two days during the day: the first day to do a complete once-​over, and the next to do the actual work. They called me and told me what they found and I authorized the work. However, when I came to pick my car up the check engine light was on! They pulled it to the back and found that my battery was on the decline. I pointed out my battery was not identified as a problem during our earlier call, which they agreed and noted I could keep driving with the battery, but it would continue to decline. I opted to be proactive, so they replaced my battery at cost, no labor charge at all. They also replaced my missing hood prop for me after contacting a local dealer (at a charge cheaper than what I found online), and the rest of the work was done on my car without a problem. Plus they gave me rides back and forth, from home to the shop, when needed and were accomodating of my schedule.
Everyone I met was great, and it’s obvious they stand behind their work. These guys seem very straightforward and above board, and it’s no surprise they have been in business for decades. I’ll definitely be back.

They’re so friendly and honest! If you’re looking for good, honest mechanics in Austin, look no further. I go to the car doctor more than a real doctor as an Asian female (I live up to my stereotype ;), and it’s important to find someone you can trust who minds your budget and fixes what needs to be fixed. They’re always smiling, keep you updated, and even offer to drive you home while your car’s in the hospital. Amazing service! Michael and Aaron are fantastic. Family-​owned. Go there, and let them know i sent you! ^^ My fave car repair shop of all time! ^^

Another 5 star review for AutoTek! I had a little ‘run in’ with another vehicle and my front headlight casing was broken. Not only did the guys at AutoTek immediately assess the damage, but they had the part in early the next morning AND drove me to & from work. That’s service at its finest. And I truly appreciate the honest work they do. Often I feel like repair places are constantly telling you what repairs ‘need to be done’ and finding ‘broken parts’ to be replaced. These guys offer straightforward recommendations. There’s no up selling or trying to wring more money out of you. They repair what’s needed, and all with a smile on their faces. It’s refreshing to deal with a business like this! I will be returning to visit these guys in the future!

It’s been months since I brought my car in, but now that I’ve got some (unrelated) repairs to take care of, I’m recalling the great service I received at my last visit to Auto Tek. I barely squeezed through the door at 6pm (closing) to drop off my car. I think most places would still take your service at that point, but what I really appreciated is that I was invited to remain inside to wait for my ride. I think it was more than 40 minutes past close by the time my husband showed up, but Michael stayed with me and chatted the entire wait rather than put me out to parking lot so he could get home to his family. (Sorry Mike’s family.)
The fact that the quote I received from them the next day was several hundred dollars less than the dealership just made the experience that much better.
Of course I’m going back, and I promise I won’t cut it so close to 6pm this time.

I was referred to Auto Tek by Discount Tire and I am forever grateful to them! This is the only place I will ever go for car repair. These guys are honest and will check up on you even days after they fixed your car! Unheard of right!

I love this place! I’ve been taking my cars here for years. I know very little about cars, but every repair they’ve done has been confirmed as necessary by a friend that is a former mechanic. Their front office is super clean with free really great coffee, the staff is competent and friendly, and they explain everything so well even I understand it. They keep in constant contact on the state of your repairs, always call if something new comes up, or if there is going to be a delay.
They will do anything they can to make you leave with a smile on your face and a happy car. They also take AAA discounts. Thanks to Michael, Andrea and Aaron in the front office for always being so patient with my questions, and to all of their highly competent repairmen (sorry, I don’t know all of your names). Thanks for being the most trustworthy auto shop in town!!!

I had the most positive experience at Auto Tek. This will be my go-​to for car trouble here in Austin. I needed an inspection and it was towards the end of the month so every place I called had an hour+ wait. I went to Jiffy Lube to get my oil changed and they informed me that they didn’t do inspections at the location I was at. Okay, fine I’ll take my business elsewhere. Thus, I arrive upon Auto Tek.
They take appointments here and were booked pretty much all day. As busy as they were, Aaron was so kind and polite to me when I called. He said they didn’t have any open spots for the day, but if I arrived within 15 mins that he would squeeze my inspection in between two appointments he was ahead on. I got there and he stayed true to his word. While I waited in the office I could hear the phone ringing off the hook and people coming in-​and-​out. Even though they were swamped they were polite to every single person that they came in contact with. Excellent customer service! Mike checked me out when Aaron finished my inspection and I was thrilled. I have never received so much courtesy from an Auto Shop before.

I am so grateful for these guys! Not only are they a AAA shop, but they are just genuinely nice people.
Aaron went over the list of dealer recommendations, explaining the ones he agreed with and the ones he didn’t. I also appreciated that he took time to explain why he didn’t agree.
What sealed the deal for me is that it turned out my speed sensor was not actually broken, but that a wire came lose. Auto Tek repaired the wire and saved me almost $ 200, rather than replacing the unit.

Aaron got in touch with us to figure out what was wrong with my car. Turns out the wrong size wheels were installed by the last mechanic. Aaron was super helpful throughout this whole process and gave us a clear write-​up of what the problem was so we could go back to the last auto shop and try to get the problem solved.

Not sure how to contact back except this. But I got a second diagnostic and now it’s a different prob and not the problem ya’ll mentioned. More of a this is wrong and what they mentioned will come up after; therfore change both is a recommendation cuz that’ll eventually need to be. I don’t trust mechanics because of this… a run around… not sure who to believe anymore or what’s really wrong with my car. It’s really sad that people become so profit based that you don’t know whether you’re getting the truth or not.

These guys do fantastic work and stand by it 100%. I had an after-​market steering rack put on over 2 years ago that wasnt working out for me. I gave Aaron a call and he ordered a brand new GM steering rack, had it put on, adjusted and back on the road within a day– free of charge!
Great refresher to find a mechanic shop that do what they say and if there’s any misunderstanding they solve it on their dime.

The solid 5-​star reviews here are really true! Fast and friendly service at an honest and very reasonable price. A+ customer service. Aaron took care of me and had me out of there in no time.
I went in without an appointment this morning for an oil change and to have them check out my squeaky brakes. After about an hour, they were done with the oil change and brake inspection and went in detail about how my brakes had plenty of life left and there were no safety or maintenance issues. Most surprising to me, they charged nothing for the brake inspection, and I get the peace of mind of knowing exactly what’s going on.
I always find it a pain to find a new, honest, reliable auto shop, but just like that, Auto Tek is definitely it for me. It’s easy to tell that they take customer service and knowledgeable, honest work very seriously at this shop. I’ll definitely be taking my car and my wife’s car here in the future, no question about it.
