Bahn Bahn

I keep checking here, hoping that Bahn Bahn has re-​opened. I’ve had banh mi several times elsewhere since Bahn Bahn went away, but none of the places were as good or as filling as this place. Where are you, Bahn Bahn???

Using Bahn instead of Banh kind of irksome because they’re literally making Vietnamese sandwiches. Unless another language comes close with the spelling or something. Then I’m sorry.
Onto the $ 5 for a little half of a sandwich. It’s extremely pricey in my opinion. The taste was ok and not quite there yet. I guess I’m looking for more traditional stuff inside like pâté, good pickled vegetables, etc.
It’s «Meh.» It’s not really bad or anything. Hope people keep the 2 stars rating in mind. If you’re looking for a quick bite then it’ll fill you up probably. My friend had the fried rice and I thought it was ok only. Really had to douse it with sriracha though.

They were one of the food trucks at Live Oak’s anniversary party today, and probably the only one offering a vegetarian option. We’re big fans of banh mi, and it was decent. Way overpriced ($ 4.00 for half a baguette) but I guess at a special event that happens. The baguette itself was way too crispy made it difficult to eat the sandwich. I doubt I would ever go here, just because I wanted banh mi, there are much better and much cheaper places out there.

Maybe it was an off day. Perhaps the onslaught of SXSW hipsters doesn’t allow for the usual care and attention for these popular Vietnamese sandwiches. Either way, I only ate ¼ of my Chicken Banh Mi sandwich. They do use dark meat for the chicken banh mi and there was a good portion of sliced cucumber and pickled carrots. But still. The bread was tough and chewy. I couldn’t do it.
The spring rolls were decent, although the filling was a bit mushy.
I did learn, however, that the misspelling of «Bahn Bahn» is intentional — would-​be patrons, they found, often spell Banh incorrectly in web searches, so they’re on top of the SEO game. Clever.

This trailer is now located directly across from the convention center. It is crammed in next to downtown burgers.
I got a pork and rice noodle dish kind of like a salad, I guess. It was worth getting again so I will be back and can update this with the actual name. The pork was tasty and I liked the flavor, I was surprised by the fact that the vermicelli noodles were cold, while not a bad thing it threw me for a minute. It was full of cool textures. One tip for the owners if your checking Unilocal,the paper liner doesn’t hold up well under the salad. I carried my togo food three blocks and it was breaking by the end of the meal. The box is plenty and the paper gets in the way of the tasty dish.
I will go back and try some more stuff as decently priced food downtown is hard to come by! By downtown standards the prices are affordable, some serious price gouging in this part of the city, but that is a whole different rant.

Now for the review:
This is functional Vietnamese food which can break up a night of drinking.
Nothing much more than that.
You get a moderate amount of mildly seasoned meat, a lot of noodle or bread, some vegetable (the marinated carrot is the most interesting). It fills the tray and you.
Some Vietnamese kids dump Rooster Sauce all over their home cooking to give it some fire and taste.
That would not be a bad idea here.
For destination Vietnamese food, go to Tam’s or Sunflower or any number of Phở places.
However, this is not unpleasant and will cover things if you are hungry.
So will about thirteen other food carts on Rainey

I’m not sure why the word for «banh» is deliberately or undeliberatly misspelled. Perhaps, the spelling tells that it’s not a traditional banh mi. In my opinion, the sandwich is similar to a traditional banh mi; however, instead of using traditional banh mi filling, the sandwich is stuffed with ingredients typically found in bun dishes.
As far as the sandwich goes, I think it’s just okay. $ 7 for a standard 10″. The bread served to us yesterday tasted a bit dry, like day old bread that’s been toasted a bit too long. The lemongrass marinade was mild, not overpowering but, just too sweet for my taste. Also, while the veggies were fresh, I prefer the more marinated daikon and carrot toppings.
Overall, okay sandwich, nothing standout. Pricey, but knowing that you are supporting a small, local business… priceless.

I was disappointed when this Vietnamese food cart moved from Jessie Street Eats to Rainey Street — currently, it resides in the back patio of up and coming White House bar (right next to Lustre Pearl). However, the food at Banh Banh is worth adding an extra few minutes to your commute and my friends and I are regular patrons of this hidden gem.
The banh mi is excellent, the best I’ve had in Austin. My favorite is the lemongrass pork. The sandwiches are flavorful and the bread is crunchy and soft; plus it’s enormous. I also love the Vietnamese coffee; it’s freshly brewed and very refreshing. The owner, Hi, is one of the friendliest people and he recognizes his regular visitors; I personally prefer it to Lulu B’s — Banh Banh is cheaper, faster, open longer and the sandwiches are bigger. This place is definitely worth a visit.

The bahn mi here is seriously amazing! All the food here is amazing. Get the pork bahn mi and add a fried egg, you will die and go to heaven, but whatever.
It does take a loooooonnnnngggggg time, however. I live down the street so I usually walk down and order, then come back about 40 minutes later. 100% worth it, I love this place.

Let me just say I gobbled down that BBQ Pork Banh Mi Vietnamese sandwich like no ones business. I ordered it with the ice cold Vietnamese coffee that has the condensed milk at the bottom it was a great meal for a perfect day. The bread was so soft on the inside crunch and flakey on the outside. This truck part of a little tailor park with other trucks the only downfall is that its hard to find parking I had to park in the red thankfully I didn’t get towed it was a sunday maybe thats why. The upside is I did see people bring their own booze duly noted for next time.

THREE sanniches in one day, is saying something. That they are incredible. Sorry Hai if i butcher your name, but the fried egg on the lemon grass pork really DID set it off.
Add a «Perfectly» fried egg for only $ 1?! Absolutely!
The bread here is a secretly family recipe and is by far the best Bahn bread I’ve had in this beautiful country affectionately called, Texas.
I first had lemon grass tofu bahn mi and then pork lemon grass. Tofu i added a fried egg to. Touch of house made fish oil, Delectable. I demolished both. Then about five or six hours later i came back for the spring rolls and ice cream from the truck adjacent. Also very tasty. Thanks.

I think I’m the only person that’s not crazy about this place. I’m a meat-​eater, but I like my vegan/​vegetarian meals. This time I ordered the lemongrass tofu bahn mi and it was really really lacking something. I felt the bread was too overbearing. The sandwich was just very easy to forget. The tofu didn’t taste like much, and the only thing I liked was the bean sprouts that added a nice crunch.
I’d suspect most people would just brush this review aside because I’m not a vegetarian, but I’ve had good veggie sandwiches, and this wasn’t one of them.
BUT, I’d totally be willing to come back and try their meat sandwiches, especially on a Sunday. A free keg and live music with a purchase of something from the trailers on a Sunday will definitely get me runnin’ back.

I decided to check out Bahn Bahn a couple weeks ago, as I’ve never tried Vietnamese food before and wanted to see what their take on tofu was like. The guys working at the trailer were friendly, and the food tasted fine. Nothing exceptional, but definitely fine.
So why only three stars? I subtracted one star for each piece of hair that I found in my food. Gross.

Best banh mi ever!!!
The owner is simply a delight. The bread is perfectly crispy, and the meat is flavorful and fresh– what more could you ask for???
I will be back :) again and again and again!!!

In Chicago I was lucky enough to live about 7 minutes from the West Argyle Street Historic District, also known as Little Vietnam. Usually once a week, I’d head uptown for a big bowl of cure-​all phở or the king of all sandwiches, banh mi. It didn’t take long before I was hooked on Ba Le’s banh mi and at a delicious $ 3.25 a pop, who could blame me? Ah, memories… sniff.
I felt like a kid in a candy store when I moved to Austin — food trucks everywhere, terrific Mexican bakeries (some open ²⁴⁄₇), kolaches and the world’s best BBQ just to name a few wonderful delights suddenly very accessible. But, where is the Vietnamese food? Sad face — solid banh mi felt very far way. And then, Bahn Bahn opened!
On a Friday afternoon, I was able to snag a prime parking spot quickly. I looked towards the parked trucks and a friendly gentlemen started waving at me — «we’re over here!». We enjoyed some chit chat after I ordered my lemongrass chicken sandwich and I mentioned how much I missed banh mi. He, in turn, promised how much I would love his.
He was right — I didn’t even make it all the way home before gently undressing my beautifully-​wrapped banh mi. The bread was warm, crusty and had just enough chew to not scratch the roof of my mouth — everything the vessel for all the insides of a good banh mi should be. Speaking of the fillings, this sandwich came fully-​loaded with well-​seasoned chicken, pickled carrots and daikon, fresh cucumber slices and a generous blanket of cilantro. I should also make note for size enthusiasts that this one measures about 10 inches.
I still have to reserve the upper hand for my Chicago Viet spots (where they’re more inexpensive, too), but Bahn Bahn will keep my appetite for my favorite sandwich sated for a good while.

Yay Bahn Mi close to Downtown! If you haven’t been over to Jesse Street behind S Lamar get your took-​ass over there… Bahn Bahn is one of many outstanding new choices in the area and by the looks of it business be good!
As soon as I read a new Bahn Mi place was up I had to rush over and grab one. I prefer these guys over Bite Mi and Lulu B’s any day! The owner is very sweet and completely passionate about putting out good food. I ordered the Pork Bahn Mi however am looking forward to trying a rice or bun dish in the near future.
The sandwiches are huge! At least 10 inches of crusty, porky goodness. The bread is very tasty here and the veggies are plentiful, the meat can appear to be scant but it’s again a 10 inch sandwich you should be full.
I am for sure heading back very soon Bahn Mi’s are one of my favs and it’s great to finally have one within walking distance.
Only let down… PARKING BLOWS for those that drive try to go during off hours to save yourself a headache

Bahn Bahn, you had me at your bread. Crispy, fluffy, light and airy, DELICIOUS. That is some damn good bread. Probably the best banh mi bread I’ve had in Austin.
I had the BBQ pork sandwich. The pork was sliced very thin, making the texture of the sandwich really nice, and while I can imagine some might say that the amount of meat was scant, I’d say that the ratio of ingredients came together into a really great combination of flavors. The most authentic and delicious banh mi I’ve had in a great while.
I’ll be back… might walk there next time cuz parking in that area can be kind of frustrating when it’s weekend lunchtime on a nice day.

This stuff is legit. Officially the best bahn mi in 78 704 and 78 703. Puts Elizabeth Street’s Bahn Mi to shame.
Sandwiches are about 10 inches long — plenty of vegetables and flavor.
I got the bbq pork and the lemon grass chicken — ate both of them in 5 minutes.
only recommendation is to consider working only lunch hours from 11 – 2 and then evening from 5 – 10

This place is great! I always have to drive north to get my bahn mi fix so it was great discovering this hidden gem off barton springs. I got the lemon grass sandwich and for $ 6 it was giant!
Come hungry and try the sandwich and a rice plate. Caution, it comes with some pretty spicy jalepenos so if you can’t handle the heat, ask for the sandwich without.
